As a First Amendment maximalist, I am inclined to reply an automatic "no" to my own headline — should journalists go to jail for spreading Russia lies? But a penalty of some kind, indeed a serious one, should certainly be levied for misinforming the public on the most important subject of our day, which has happened repeatedly over the last few years concerning the Russia probe. And when these prevarications can be shown to have been deliberate, to have been done knowingly, difficult as that may be to prove

The media/journalists should licensed, and be able to more easily be sued for negligence for reporting bad information - much as a lawyer or doctor can be sued for malpractice.

My thought is always assume it’s a lie if the msm or a dem states something.

Yes they should. The crime is sedition. These schills KNOWINGLY spread lies and disinformation to the detriment of our constitutional republic. I hope a few of the more prominent liars like Maggie Haberman and Anderson Cooper are locked up for a LONG time. WWG1WGA! MAGA!

When powerful people start getting indicted for their lies in regard to the phony Mueller probe hopefully they will throw "journalists" and their owners under the bus.

Should journalists go to jail for yelling "FIRE!" in a crowded room?
Ask one of them.

The media that knowingly spread lies for the democrats (or any political party) participated in a conspiracy to cause harm. That has nothing to do with the First Amendment and must be punished like any other organization that intentionally did the same thing.

We have had no real journalism for at least a decade or more. What we have had is Pravda West, lying through their leftist capped teeth. Willfully lying and fomenting social unrest should get some of them either thrown into jail or their networks licenses yanked for at least a year.

They actually colluded with the DNC and Clinton Company to push a totally false narrative which was seditious in nature. OF COURSE they should be jailed. It´s impossible to think that within those 90 thousand plus indictments none of them are for ´journalists´. And yes, Maggie Halberman is neck deep in all of this. She should be worried.....

No. But they should have to rack up millions of dollars having to defend themselves in court.

Slippery slope, watch out!
BELIEVE that if there is ever anything like this comes about, 99% of the "criminals" will be convicted by leftist thugs like Southern Poverty Law Center and Breitbart, Fox, etc will be the first imprisoned.
Very, very bad idea.

The beginning of the end of "journalism" got a jump start by the likes of Cronkite, Rather, and their ilk when they decided it was their duty to run the country during the Vietnam War. They got American military killed then and they are still in that mode. Journalism schools became indoctrination centers for left wing thought and the brainwashed products molded by them are still spreading like a bad virus.

When we start jailing people for telling lies, it will only be one short step from that to jailing people for telling the truth.

While I have revulsion at the "reporters", this, to me, is a slippery slope. Governments always have the power to determine what´s the "truth".
I´m all for suing the heck out of them, though.

#16, we already jail people for telling lies - via perjury. And the fedgov already jails people for telling the truth when the fedgov calls it a lie- see scooter libby.

Unfortunately, no.
This is one of the costs of freedom. People can lie to you. We don´t have a legal contract with the press that requires certain standards. The government has been told by the Constitution to keep hands off.
The best we can do is, as Trump has, declare them fake news and turn away. Don´t watch their news shows. Don´t buy their papers. Don´t listen to their opinions. Write comments regularly that point out their lies.
Most of all, give them NO BELIEF. They have no professional credentials as for example a lawyer does by passing the Bar exam. Their credibility is EVERYTHING to them. Take it away.

Granted that journalists should not go to jail for journalism. But these are not real journalists, and what they´ve been doing sure as all hellfire ain´t journalism.
