Country House was declared the winner of the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday following “an inquiry ruling” and the disqualification of Maximum Security, officials said. The disqualification marked "the first time in 145 years" that "the horse who finished first in the Kentucky Derby was disqualified," the official Twitter account for the sporting event said. Country House was a 65-1 longshot in the race that included 18 other competitors.

Wow.
WOW.
Live long enough and you´ll see pretty much everything.
This will be talked about forever.
Country House 65/1 Kentucky Derby winner by disqualification.
Plenty of champagne bottles (empty or otherwise) and ridiculous women´s hats are bouncing off the walls tonight.
Plenty of bookies are diving for cover tonight too. Know it.
Heh. Dewey defeats Truman. Madam President.

My $2 bet would have brought about $3,000. Pity I didn´t make it to the betting window!

Footnote: Maximum Security was placed 17th by the stewards - - behind the worst-finishing of the horses with whom he interfered.
´Tis a shame - - because he woulda won anyway.

The stewards making this decision should all be fired. Ridiculous decision - the so-called interference had no impact on the outcome of the race, and the jockey that made the complaint was no where near the incident. The jockey that was impacted by the lane change did not place a complaint. These stewards need to be removed, they´ve made a joke of the 2019 Kentucky Derby, and the entire 2019 Triple Crown. Horse racing is already struggling, I hope this doesn´t damage it further.

The winner will always be defined by an asterisk. Pity. Now comes the Preakness. If Maximum Security wins that the talk will be that he coulda been a contenda for the triple crown. Horse racing takes on all the blah, blah , blah of politics.

The horse that crossed the finish line first still thinks he won. The should invalidate all the betting on the race.

Bad call. And the Saints should have been in the Super Bowl.
2019 - the year of bad sports officiating.
Can´t wait for the World Series this year. We will be betting on who will mess it up, the umpire crew or the instant replay center.

They should conduct this event like a Roman chariot race - no rules.

I saw the incident in question and, to me, it looked like horse racing.

Once again, sporting officials determined the outcome of a sporting event. Its happening a lot. In all sports. Don´t know why. Trying to be ´fair´?

In an age of unbridled litigiousness, the judges make themselves the story. How juicy, how tempting, how irresistible to be the *first*, the landmark ruling. No matter how many angles they explored, the outcome was pre-determined. Now we have horse race political correctness.

I know next to nothing about horse racing rules. Seems like the first horse across the line wins.....of course these days, the normal, sane rules do not apply any more in most places. I guess not in horse racing, either.
Maybe this is legit, I have no idea. But is sure smells stinky.

What they accused Maximum Security of happens at the start of every race. Nobody is interested in horse racing anymore. Final nail in the coffin.

All the complaining about Maximum Security coming "out of his lane" to me is the dumbest thing I´ve ever heard. They are HORSES! They are running in MUD and you think they are worried about WHERE they are at the moment? Geesh! The FASTEST horse won. Period. I feel sorry for the Jockey on Country House. He KNEW he didn´t win that Race, but they made a big deal out of him, and the Horse, anyway. How embarrassing! I feel so bad for the REAL WINNER of the Race. I also agree that the people who made that call should be FIRED! It was the first time I ever heard Booing when the Trophy was given to the "winner".

Terrible sport. Terrible for the horses. Florida just voted to end greyhound racing. The same should happen to horse racing.
Horses are like humans in that their bones aren’t solidified until they are 5 years old. These horses are put through grueling training and racing when they are two and three years old - it sets them up for a lifetime of health issues if they even survive the track.
Not to mention the psychological effects. My farrier refused to shoe former racehorses because they are not mentally stable and are dangerous. Did you ever wonder why the horses are escorted to the starting gates? Have you ever watched their body language?
Terrible sport.
End of rant. Flame away.

What we saw:
Maximum Security was well in the lead when it appeared that he moved over a bit as another horse in the tight pack behind him moved closer behind him. MS’s rear foot seemed to tap the leading foot of that following horse. It seemed to cause no disturbance as MS was still ahead; the other horse could not have passed him in any case.
The horse that was declared the winner was way out on the outside and nowhere near what they saw as “the problem”. Not one of the horses directly behind MS.
No one will ever consider Country House to be the winner of this race, Never.

PS. I have to disagree with OP. There was no way that anything that happened could have caused an accident. Unless there is such a thing as “tailgating” in horse racing.

Why have officials? Why have judges? If we, the interestd, but basically ignorant mob can call the shots, why the umpires, referees and other officials? Let´s jsut always vote on who wins, and then take that to some lefty/neocon District judge to rule on when the outcome is close.
Basically, I am saying, it is what it is. Like it, hate it, you can´t do anything about it. So, get on with life.

So, did the Kentucky Derby hire NCAA officials as their stewards?

Sorry for blank reply above.
I don´t have a horse in the race and tuned in about the time the official decision was made. Clearly Maximum Security started moving out of his current lane, which I would guess would be on the jockey. Clearly impeded the horse directly that he cut off which was entirely unnecessary as he was in a lead position and not pinned to the rail.
Clearly the fastest horse, stewards make a proper call, jockey should be taking the heat IMO.

Perhaps the Russians had a hand in this. Call Bob Mueller.
I´d hate to see the KD turned into a judge decided race like our elections are.

Maximum Security was clearly the best horse. But Jockey Saez did some unfortunate and unnecessary "race riding" - - almost causing an accident. It was an otherwise brilliant ride - - perfectly "doing the bobo" on the entire field. Oh well.
