A power struggle at the NRA has pitted Wayne LaPierre, the gun-rights group’s executive vice president, against its newly installed president, Oliver North. In a letter to board members on Thursday, which was published by The Wall Street Journal, LaPierre accused North of an extortion plot in an effort to oust him. “Leaders in every walk of life must often choose: between what is true, and what is polite; between what is convenient, and what is right,” LaPierre wrote in the letter.

The NRA for years has been willing to sellout the little guy for big money and facetime with the in crowd.
The place needs to be shaken up and determine what its mission is.
As for the WSJ,well, the Murdochs have turned it into Soap Opera Digest...

Anything called a news source with New York in it´s title is DOA especially an article about the NRA.
I believe Wayne LaPierre is the George Bush or Jim Jones of the NRA, a dud. I never cared for the man and yes there is a power struggle at the top Ollie North must have tweaked LaPierre off.

#3, I agree. LaPierre was never particularly likeable, has been saying exactly the same things for 20 years, and needs to go.

La Pierre has been running the NRA like his own personal fiefdom for decades and decades. I know at least one former NRA Director who absolutely dispises LaPierre after my friend spent 5 years at the top levels of the NRA.
LaPierre keeps the NRA pointed in a fairly good direction, not killing the golden goose, but I have always wondered how much he has been skimming for himself. Even if not stealing,I have no facts that he has been, he is definitely totally controlling, and forces out any Directors who might interfere with his "kingship".
I am not sure how much I trust Ollie North, but I do not trust LaPierre much at all, this could easily be an attempt to clean out corruption in the NRA.
I have been an NRA member since 1967, and life member for 40+ years. I have not thought LaPierre was a good guy for 20+ years.

Or could it be that Ollie North is trying to stop a little coup happening against him? LaPierre seems to be so addicted to the power that he has to take a demotion to VP so he can still be in the mix. Was he caught out trying to do an end run around North so he could actually run things again himself? Who knows. If LaPierre is trying a power grab, he best knock it off now. This isn´t Ollie´s first rodeo Wayne. You should know that by now.

I hope this doesn´t escalate into a toothless dues collecting organization. We still need the NRA.

No, #8, you misunderstand. LaPierre has ALWAYS been "Executive VP", which is the ACTUAL power in the NRA, as he has remade it. LaPierre lets various figureheads sit in the big chair (President) but he minimizes their and the BOD power, keeping the rules rigged so HE controls it, pretty much. And he forces out any Directors who get the idea of pushing back at LaPierre.
He WANTS to be a VP - but with all the power flowing through that office.

As an NRA Life member who hasn´t paid attention to the intra-organizational stuff, I am somewhat puzzled by the hostility toward Wayne Lapierre evident on this thread. How has the guy fallen short? One poster complains that Lapierre has been saying "exactly the same things for 20 years". Isn´t that a GOOD thing?
Just aksin´.

#13, I said that LaPierre has been doing a good basic job, not ´killing the golden goose´, but I have been told that he is making sure to feather his own nest first and ensure that nobody gets to have any power to look too closely at NRA finances.
Doing good gun rights work while also robbing members blind is not good leadership, but better than doing BAD for gun rights while robbing members blind.
I was personal friend with one major NRA leader, who has since died, and still personal friends with a BOD member who resigned after 5 years because LaPierre keeps all the power to himself in a very distrustful way, amid long standing rumors of his hand in the till.

Not necessarily ultra accurate, but a bit of history.

Neal Knox was a personal friend. He left the NRA later, partially in disgust at LaPierre, but wouldn´t tell me many details, just that ´things aren´t right´, and he ran his own gun rights group for a while. Neal was not a vindictive guy, or a negative guy. His kids still send out a newsletter.

#´s 14 & 15, thanks for the info. If Lapierre has not ben quite on the level I´m surprised that no pushback occurred much earlier.
