LONDON — Land ownership in England, a source of enormous wealth, is often shielded by a culture of secrecy harking back to the Middle Ages. But a researcher says that after years of digging, he has an answer: Less than 1 percent of the population — including aristocrats, royals and wealthy investors — owns about half of the land, according to “Who Owns England,” a book that is to be published in May. And many of them inherited the property as members of families that have held it for generations — even centuries.

Well, duh! The vast majority of people own no more land than that their house sits on. "Wealthy" landowners, and that would include any farmer with a large spread, tend to own lots of agricultural land. Owning most of the land is a far cry from controlling most of the wealth.
One could as easily say less than 0.1% of the population (´journalists´) control 90% of the information people receive.

If you are jealous of other people getting rich NYTs, there is a stock exchange where you can buy ownership shares and get rich with them. Quit whining, and get rich with them. Quit being a whining loser, get to work, save some money and invest it. The truth is you don´t give a darn about inequality, you just want to stir people up, and get them to vote you into power--but that would be stupid of them to do that--because you are a loser.

And couldn´t you also say that half (or a helluva lot) of the United States is owned by the federal government?

Someone might want to point out to this putz that people left agrarian lands over 100 years ago, whether they owned it or not. The jobs were and are in urban areas. Who, besides farmers and a few grouse shooters, wants all that land anyway? This is a deeply stupid premise and of course same for the article.

Considering that until recently, royalty (Kings/Queens) virtually owned England, this is not a big surprise. At least the British aren´t ruled by a monarchy anymore and Queen Elizabeth can´t do the "off with their heads" thing.

I suppose we are expected to react with hatred towards those folks. Not me. They are the ones who have managed to keep their family together and have at least one successful person in each succeeding generation for many, many years. Not easy to do.
Sure, a certain portion is owned by the new rich, purchased from failed old rich. But, SO?
I have a very NON-wealthy friend of over 40 years who owns about 3000 acres. He got it from his parents and two uncles, all three which spent their lifetimes accumulating farm land, as did the previous generations. His family has been on that land, or mearby parcels since before the Civil War.
I despise the NYT.

England is owned by the spawn of mohammed now, I don´t care who holds the actual paperwork. That goes for France, Spain and a big piece of the Scandinavian countries. They have a foothold in the US and if not for the 2nd Amendment would be a lot further along because our government is stupid enough to help them with their conquest.

You DO realize that is how a "kingdom" works? That the "king" owns everything and parcels it out to whomever he wants.
The system has changed since William the Bustard* became William the Conqueror, but other than having a revolution a la the Russians, it will take forever for that system to change.
* I do wish Lucianne.com could be a little more adult in how they banned words here. I guess we´ll have to call the WW2 heroes in the Philippines "The Battling Bustards of Bataan", too.

I wonder how much taxes are paid by the 1%. I can imagine it is commensurate with their property holdings if not more.

So, in the United States more than a quarter of the land is owned by the federal government, 28% or 640 million acres. England has no such immense government ownership.
