When it comes to raising money, former congressman and failed Senate candidate Beto O´Rourke is a force to be reckoned with. However, when it comes to charitable giving, O´Rourke´s personal contributions are far from generous—typically less than 1 percent of his total income. O´Rourke earned $366,455 in 2017, according to his tax returns, which he posted on his campaign website on Monday. That same year, he reported charitable donation of just $1,166, or 0.3 percent of his total income. That´s even less than rival Democratic candidate Kirsten Gillibrand reported giving to charity on her 2018 tax return.

I know part of the game is to run down every candidate by making them look selfish, but this part of the game is as fake as the rest.
I used to give to charities, but I dont anymore.
I am taxed an obscene amount against my will and some of that goes to charities I would never support, such as Planned Parenthood.
I gave to 9/11 relief. There were more scam artists than truly needy people.
I gave to Katrina relief. Found out I bought lap dances.
I gave to the Komen Foundation. Found out they got too much money and gave some to Planned Parenthood.
I´ve given to the Red Cross. Might as well have thrown my money out the window.
I even gave to the NRA way back when, only to find out I was funding cocktail hour when I couldn´t even afford beer.
The list goes on. I try to do the right thing and crooks play me for a chump. No more. Politicians, being crooks themselves, know how crooked these charities are. I don´t blame them for not donating.

Beto prefers to be generous with other people’s money.

#1, it´s not that hopeless. I give to local causes, donating books to the VA Hospital, giving to the neighbor kid´s Boy Scout troop, helping the PTA provide backpacks to elementary schoolers, local churches, the Food Bank in town, clothes to the Women´s Shelter, baby furniture to the church nursery. There are many places to help without getting caught up in efforts you may not support.

I only donate locally. Salvation Army bellringers at Christmas and to our local churches for use locally. I am not interested in donating for missionaries anywhere. These 2 counties in VA. are poor. Charity begins at home.

When I gave to the 9/11 victims only to find out most of that money was literally seized by the evil and contemptuous Red Cross, was my last mass-donation, too. I am very specific about who I give to and most of that is non-deductible- so you could not prove I gave anything at all. So- Who the Hell knows what anyone gave. I literally despise Beto, but, then again, I also despise dishonest journalistic screeds.

#4 is right. The Salvation Army is the place to send money for natural disasters and I´ll put in a plug for Samaritan´s Purse, too.

I give to Goodwill, the St. Vincent de Paul association, my parish church and a local monastery. All of it is local. I don´t give to BIG charities since I simply don´t trust them any more.

What´s with the sudden push for charities? Most of them are self-serving and dishonest.
There is no reason to read comments further than #1. The bigger and more established the charity, the more of the money donated goes to "administration." As an example, the SPCA has only enough money left over for actual aid to pets under ten percent of their take. Give to local causes and by all means do not give cash. Even the Salvation Army recruits bums off the street to man the collection plates. If they skim off the top, who would know? The United Way is terrible. They have embedded themselves in many organizations and workplaces as a mandatory "donation." Who is getting the kickbacks?
Yes, even the NRA. They hold conventions in expensive locales and the fine dining is financed by members. The dues are cheap but they hit you up many times during the year for extra donations. When the time comes, the 2nd Amendment will save itself.

I´m really tired of hearing about the abundance or lack of charitable donations by political candidates of any stripe. It is such a mockery of charity that one should brag about the size of their donations based on tax returns. Personally, I do not list charitable donations on my tax returns. For one thing, the standard deduction now makes the effort to reduce my tax burden moot. For another, I contribute in ways both measurable and immeasurable. To judge a person´s heart based on a tax return is absurd and ignorant. In this arena, study their deeds not their tax returns.

I support my church and it’s charities, but for those who have qualms about where the money goes, there are other ways to contribute that cost time and energy but not a red cent. Donate blood/platelets. Volunteer at a school, a food bank, Meals on Wheels, or any of the hundreds of organizations in the community. Host an exchange student. There are lots of ways to make a positive difference.

How much of that 0.7% was in the form of used underwear?

I have to laugh at the stupidity of Demon-Rats (over and over and over again)!!!
They were going to "show President Trump" by releasing 10 years of their income tax returns to try to shame the president into doing the same. But they forgot that people would actually look at their returns and show what holier-than-thou hypocrite sleazebags they truly are!!!
Numbers don´t lie!!!
