Strange as it may seem, watching Bernie Sanders on the Fox News town hall Monday night brought back memories of the Soviet Union for me. I went there for the first time in 1987, one year before Sanders went to the communist country. I was on a cultural exchange arranged for crime writers; Bernie was there to get married. Although I was more or less still on the left, I found what I saw horrifying. Bernie took off his shirt and sang ”This Land Is Your Land.”(video)In other words, although we were in the USSR at basically the same point,

Yup, some people are stupid and gullible and it isn´t just young people. There are a bunch of old hippies that closed their minds, or burned them out long ago, that think Socialism is the answer. They are well programed in that thinking and new information doesn´t impact them in the least.
And, there will always be Bernies willing to take advantage of them. Consider the rewards available; vast power and money. One thing that we should have learned over the last couple decades is that our system of government isn´t automatically good for the people. It is open to corruption and ill use with bad results for We the People.
BO waltzed in with pretty promises and adoration from the mob. Even people that didn´t vote for him were wishing the first Black president success. Of course he delivered nothing of what he promised, expanded misery, and seemingly presided over enormous scandals including the attempt to corrupt a presidential election and undermine a presidency. That is what happened on BO´s watch even if he was just a sap along for the ride. The worst possible outcome is that he was the mastermind of the plot.
So the requirement of our Republic, IF WE CAN KEEP IT, is vigilance and the willingness to FIGHT to maintain and even bolster our freedoms. Bernies may speak and make obviously false promises. It´s not enough to mock them. We must prove, over and over, that they are wrong. Our arguments may fall on many deaf ears but not all. More importantly, when given the opportunity, we must create constructs in law and put people in the courts to be a bulwark against the Bernies and their lust for power.

Have you noticed? Two things a socialist will not give up, money and power. They want your money, but will not give up theirs. And with an economy collapsing around them,they will preach more socialism, and will kill opponents as in Zimbabwe, Venesuela, and NK.

Beautiful essay.
It´s good to contemplate our assumptions about our country and the protection of freedom it offers, as we wake up to see the rubble in Paris.
Our faith in the permanence of things we love and depend upon is vulnerable. Ronald Reagan was right:
Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States when men were free.
I don´t know if Reagan ever met Sanders, but Reagan knew him very well.

When did it become taboo to teach public school students the truth about communism? (And "socialism" is just a euphemism.) I´d say it was just about the time the Teachsters´ Union became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the demonrat party. And not too long after the demonrat party became the US branch of international communism.

I was in the former Soviet Union, around the same time as the author, for 3 weeks. His observations were my observations, exactly. I watched a few minutes of Bernie’s townhall, until I couldn’t take it anymore. The audience was stacked with true, socialist believers, and Bernie was disdainful and discourteous to his hosts. You could see the veneer coming off of the old coot, and it was frightening at times. This is a man who would throw you in a gulag without a moment’s hesitation, while dining on caviar, and fine wine. And, the crowds cheered him.

Nobody asks the most important question:
How can the government do more good things by having less money to do good things?
We have overwhelming evidence that a tax increase will result in lower government funding. How is it comrade Bernie that you plan to break that historical pattern, tell us how to expect a different result than that repeated often? Until you can do that shut the hell up about more taxes.
All this claptrap about more free sheet is nonsense.
No matter how hard you wish the laws of economics to be different it won´t happen. You can only squeeze so much out of an economy before squeezing harder yields less. We have been on that less side since we ramped up to 17% from 8% of GDP in WWII.
We can resume arguing the merits of maximizing government revenue and do-goodery vs Calvin Coolidge: "Collecting more taxes than is absolutely necessary is legalized robbery" but let´s do so by first recognizing the harsh reality that we are taxed too much, you can´t have more no matter how hard you click your ruby red slippers.

I see Bernie as a Grifter. Here is a guy who never had a "Real" job, yet he manages to get himself elected Mayor of Burlington, VT. He then went on to become the Socialist of DC. Now, generally that won´t make you a Millionaire a couple times over, but Bernie made that happen! He owns Three Homes and lives a very RICH MAN´S lifestyle. When you see him on TV, he looks like a Bum, but that´s his Act! He´s a True Grifter and it has given him a great lifestyle with him never having to spend one day getting his hands dirty!

No.7 is exactly right. My wife and I forced ourselves to watch that dreadful man spout off about communism. We observed that he is dangerous and that crowd that cheered him on, especially when he dodged the question about Ilhan Omar, was particularly disgusting. It is scary that he has followers. If by some remote chance Crazy Bernie gets elected, we will have a really big problem on our hands.

Why would anyone want to listen to a bitter, spiteful man like Bernie Sanders, who has never accomplished anything, and has lived his whole life off the creativity and productivity of others? Why would anyone of peace and happiness want to be infected with the misery and unhappiness of Bernie Sanders? Please do not invite Bernie to the party.

B.S., Commonly known as Bernie Sanders is a total disgrace to all red blooded Americans.
I hope there are some delicious scandals about Bernie that will surface and cause him to self destruct.
