My college-age son called me recently and asked me about “kratom,” saying that it was all over campus and even some of his friends were trying it. Thankfully, I got the phone call asking about what it was rather than him just hopping on the bandwagon of trying the latest trend. “What is it?” he asked. And for once, I had to admit, that although I had heard of it, I didn’t know much else about it. This concerned me on many levels. How is there a “wellness” product being promoted and sold

My friends son od and died taking Kratom. From what I understand, kids trying to beat an opioid addiction will attempt using Kratom as drug.
Most supplements are not FDA approved- but FDA approves things that aren’t good for you too..

So, a college student can’t get online and do his own research?

Throwing out my BS card .... do your own research. ALL deaths associated with Kratom have other underlying reasons.
These same people that condemn alternative medicines, sing the praises of the AMA and Big Pharma. No one and let me repeat myself .... NO ONE has ever died by overdosing or any other medical reason by taking Kratom.
Kratom comes from the coffee family and is no more addictive than coffee. I’m almost 70 and have used Kratom now for several years for chronic pain. I promise you, I have more withdrawal symptoms from my morning coffee than I do from my Kratom tea.
I’m sure like anything it can be abused. But even if abused it will put you to sleep it won’t kill you.
I guess I’m saying is, don’t believe everything you read, do your own research ....

Umm...during my formative years at the University of Iowa if I didn´t know what a drug was...I took it and found out! We had a blast. Of course there was no Meth or Heroin back then. The last thing I would ever do is call my mommy or daddy to ask about anything...except for money of course! Then I got a job and didn´t need that anymore! Got to buy a motorcycle! Life was glorious!

Don´t be so quick to bash this kid for asking his "mommy" what kratom is. I would have done the same thing if my mom was a medical doctor like his.

Great comments from posters on both sides of the argument. Personally I am more concerned about what they are adding to our beef and chicken or those little energy drinks that concentrate levels of caffeine and sugar to the point that a kid can´t sleep at night. When I was a kid, nobody needed a supplement to be full of energy.
As for Big Pharma, pay attention to the side effects attributed to those drugs being pushed on TV. Many of them have a history of liver damage, MS or death in small numbers but not small enough for me. As for BP readings, I have told several nurses and doctors to pound sand, I´m not taking anything. If I die from hypertension at least I´ll know what killed me. Do you know anybody over the age of forty who has a natural 120 reading?

Kratom is related to coffee but is not nearly as euphoric and addictive.
Kratom does not stimulate the nucleus accumbens so it does not produce the level of euphoria of codeine, coffee, alcohol, and so on. There is no respiratory depression with kratom, which is why *nobody* has died from kratom alone in its thousands of years of use. In this way it is extremely different from products of the poppy.
The pain relief is comparable to beer, without the dumb. It does not taste as good as beer. Unsweetened, it has practically no calories, same as black coffee and unsweetened tea.
I´m sure as soon as it´s taxed like beer and nicotine, politicians and press doctors will love kratom.

I have a relative that is now in his upper 80´s and for most of his life, refused to take ANY prescription or OTC medications, but bought every fly-by-night "Supplement" that claimed to help everything from prostate issues to blood pressure and memory problems. I don´t think kratom was one of them.
He is now in stage 4 kidney failure, and 2 of his doctors say it is because of these supplements.

"It´s natural is often the claim about some new substance. Yeah, botulin is also natural, as is curare, hemlock, typhoid and ebola.
"Natural" has absolutely NOTHING with "safe".
Life is all about choices, never choose to experiment on yourself with unknown chemical substances.
