Two recent deaths in which men plummeted in the Grand Canyon follow dozens of apparently accidental fatal falls since the national park was established 100 years ago. Michael Obritsch, of Santa Rosa, California, died April 3 after falling from the edge of the South Rim in Grand Canyon Village, near the Yavapai Geology Museum. His body was found 400 feet (more than 122 meters) below the rim, according to park officials. A tourist from Macau, China, fell to his death on March 28. The man was at least 50 years old, park officials said. The man was trying to take a photo
Here´s a tip: If you and your spouse have been fighting and talking divorce, refuse to go to the Grand Canyon on vacation!!!

There must be a direct correlation between taking selfies and Grand Canyon deaths.

If I ever visited the Canyon I would be standing back from the rim at least ten feet and wearing a ´chute. There´s more to this than simple accidents but Darwin gets to be right once again.

Stupid. Crawl to the edge, lie on your back. Then snap the selfie and crawl back. Nobody ever fell off a precipice without going too close to the edge.
That said, if you crawl too close and the rocks give way and crumble, you had a hand in widening the canyon!

We have made life so safe people sometimes forget to be careful. Established well maintained trails, handrails, various kinds of guards, bridges, they all serve to make for a very pleasant and safe experience, but at the same time they can also make us complacent.
Be careful out there. Gravity is not our friend and our bodies damage very easily.

AP is still trying to figure out how to blame this on Trump.

When I was up on Glacier Point in Yosemite with a friend years ago, I even hung way back behind the guard rail. I feel sort of a pull when in high places. Meanwhile tourists were going out around the guard rail to get a little closer to the edge for photos. Insane. You can’t fix stupid.

Apparently, stupid fixes itself.

When my wife and I went to the Grand Canyon some years back, three young women went past the guard rail out to the edge of the Canyon and were horsing around. I hurried my wife along to another overlook because I did not want to witness them fall (I don´t believe they did, but I wasn´t takingthat chance).

This rash of people ´falling´...I think there is a ´Pusher´ at work! Oops, didn´t mean to bump into you as you stood at the edge!
Are there any videos?

How long before liberals begin insisting we fill this death trap with concrete? We ALL know fences don´t work...

So, is there no way they can solve this problem? I know people need to be careful, but maybe there is a problem there that needs a fix.

Oh Lord, AP, slow news day? You’re just discovering this? Books have been written for years—some for sale at the Grand Canyon gift shops—about accidents, suicides and murders at the Grand Canyon. It’s been going on ever since the parks opened, and it’s WAY more than dozens of deaths. It’s in the hundreds.

I believe many people simply lose their balance when they are posing the selfie. Their depth and distance perception is thrown off by the scale of the background.
Careless and stupid people cannot be protected from every danger.

Who wants a rail in their selfie? Also there isn´t a guard rail around the whole canyon or tails. I´m always surprised that the mules know better than the humans.

Damned gravity.
If you are over age 12 or so, this is purely an intelligence test, and a lot of folks are taking themselves out of the gene pool by flunking the test. Certainly sad for the families to lose a loved one, but the list of ´who is at fault´ is very short, one name for each incident. Assuming no pushing, of course.
