Audrey Hepburn was the princess of Hollywood thanks to such hits as Roman Holiday, Sabrina and Breakfast At Tiffany´s. But before the beauty rolled west, she had harrowing experiences in Nazi occupied Holland during World War II. And in the new book Dutch Girl: Audrey Hepburn And World War II - which shared an excerpt in People this week - historian and biographer Robert Matzen wrote about how she helped the resistance in her native country.

Ms. Hepburn had infinitely more character than any of the current crop in today’s Hollywood.

She greatly influenced teenage girls when she appeared in Roman Holiday and she remained a star thereafter. We all wanted to be thin & look like her. Loved those early movies of her´s but never knew about her WWII years until much later.

Despite these childhood experiences, or because of them, she exuded an inner peace that was forged with steely strength. She understood evil because she had faced it daily with a cunning resistance and dedication to life. I believe it was these qualities that were captured by the camera, no matter the role she was playing. She was strong in her vulnerability. She was a light from Heaven.

I adore her work. She was quite a gal (woman to woman). I have my favs on DVD. I viewed them originally in the 90´s. Thanks for the reminder to watch them again. Today´s actresses can´t even hold a candle...perfection.

Oh, I can just see her being the inspiration for several of the wonderful Hogan´s Heroes episodes (my favorite TV series of ALL time). I want to read the book Matzen has written.

Eloquently stated, #5. In fact, she played God later in life in a movie with Richard Dreyfus & Holly Hunter called Always. She has always been one of my favorite actresses. She is as much pure class & grace, as current actresses are crude and vulgar.

Can you imagine any of the idiots and snowflakes who infest Hollyweird these days ever doing anything to risk their lives to help someone else?
There may be some there, but the mouthy ones you hear about, not a chance.

There was another starring actress back then who helped the War Dept by designing something that helped the war effort. I forget her name but she was brilliant.
Those were the good old days when Tinseltown had real patriots and real movies instead of the commies we have now spewing out their filth and movies.
You ever been to see the ´stars´ on the sidewalk? The place is filthy and surrounded by peep shows and whatnot. It suits Tinseltown to a T.

Hedy Lamarr. Lamarr realized that by transmitting radio signals along rapidly changing, or "hopping," frequencies, American radio-guided weapons would be far more resilient to detection and jamming. The sequence of frequencies would be known by both the transmitter and receiver ahead of time, but to the German detectors their message would seem like gibberish.

The lady had class. A word Hollywood eliminated a long time ago.
