Bob Gates, perhaps the most farsighted post-Cold War defense secretary, presciently predicted in 2011 “that there will be dwindling appetite and patience in the U.S. Congress—and in the American body politic writ large—to expend increasingly precious funds on behalf of nations that are apparently unwilling to devote the necessary resources or make the necessary changes to be serious and capable partners in their own defense.” Gates, who once rightly understood that the Saudis would fight Iranians to the last American, also essentially hinted the same with regards to Germany and Russia, “nations apparently willing and eager for American taxpayers to assume

Stick a tariff on all goods exported from Germany to the US equal to the 2% GDP.
This is another infiltration scheme. When the USSR broke up and they lost control of their territories, they set up a plan to infiltrate those areas of the west (politics, religion and education) and gain control of the decision making in daily life. They dont even have to tip toe about. The EU has total gun control, already. The citizen is at the mercy of the political class.

Bring all of our military home from Germany and close every single base. Then watch the German economy nose dive into the toilet. It would be a lot less expensive for them to go ahead and pay their 2%. Not to mention that our absence would give the Muslim hordes there free rein.

The answer to this is sooo simple; just close one US funded base in Germany and pull 5,000 troops back home. Pack up about 400 M1A1 Abram´s tanks and roll them to Bremerhaven for shipping out. Watch those Teutonic jokers scramble to pay up their fair share. NATO SHAMeO!

Germany (and the rest of the EU) thinks it can outwait President Trump, until we get the next liberal democrat in office. One of the socialist democrats, who thinks America is bad, would be perfect. They did love Obama...

Look back over the last 100 years, during that time period, has Germany ever been a US ally? Maybe only when it was in Germany’s national interest.

NATO is effectively the US as a low cost defender of Europe.
The inaction of the Euro allies underscores a simple fact: Russia is not a threat to anyone anymore. It is raised as the boogeyman to hype defense spending, a very lucrative line, because people have been conditioned by the Cold War and now Putin-mania.
It´s long past time to wrap it up in Europe. Until we do, we are little more than a cheap date for the Euros, a de facto mercenary force that allows them to slink away from that old "frontline of freedom."

To Germany the US is nothing but a piggy bank and a dumping ground for their substandard and overpriced automotive products. The fact that their idealistic leadership was not bright enough to protect their citizens from the islamic invasion indicates that they are not worth protecting. They will be calling for help when the situation really gets out of control and we will not be there to help. They let one insane man who liked to drink beer and pontificate in bars destroy them and half of Europe, that´s how good their judgement is. Every time they pull that teutonic superiority ruse we should answer with one name, "P51 Mustang."

They will pay and only pay when the option of not doing so becomes too expensive. No US President has had the appetite to do that. Will PDT have it? IMO, unlikely before 2020. If re-elected he will go after Germany ( and China) with vengeance.

It is not the job of the U.S. to use our military to protect a 1st World Industrial Nation. If they will not pay their fair share, then our Government has to take the necessary
action to ensure that Germany does pay, one way or the other. We are not the World´s piggy bank and we need to take care of ourselves FIRST.

Is the issue that Germany pays only 2% of their own defense costs?
Or that they pay only 2% of their GDP on defense?
Perhaps the headline needs some fixin´...

The Saudis will fight the Iranians down to the last American. Okay now that line´s honesty about made me spit coffee. LOL
Truthfully though, previous presidents who allowed the situation to go on in Europe like it has, enabled the problems we are seeing today. Not having to pay for their own defenses, they could spend that money on reckless social programs. And boy did they. Time to cut the umbilical cord to Uncle Sam. If we have to have bases over there, put them in Poland or Hungary. Let us worry more about our own borders HERE, and stop the carnage against our own citizens.

Agreed. We should stop making any efforts to defend Germany. They must WANT to be defended, and apparently they are too stupid today to see that Russia is a real threat, and could do to them what it has done to Ukraine.

One online source says that we have 40,000 troops in 179 bases in Germany now. Not sure how accurate this is, but if true, we need to start bringing them home, closing bases and blowing up all the buildings so the Germans don´t get to use them. If they want to purchase them, we could avoid the demolition.
If not, just drop the main walls an leave it all lay.

Donald Trump is a genius. I remember during the campaign when our Commies went crazy defending NATO.
It is time to end the New World Order and return to Nation states. Hope Brexit happens and then Germans will like US more. The expansion of NATO to the Russian border was a huge mistake by Clinton, Bush and the Kenyan. In realville Russia is a small country that is also the last Christian nation. We should get along with Russia, that is a good thing, not bad, no? If the Germans want to prove their strength come talk to US after they have won the second Crimean War.

While shouldering the burden of re-building Europe we were saddled with the UN´s Korean War, and undertook the lion´s share of defending Europe against the Soviets, and then cuts a deal with Russia. And now Germany has the gall to refuse to pay their share of NATO?
Cetainingly, there are benefits to us in participating in a NATO type organization to defend against the communists until they ultimately implode for their stupidity. However, not so much as to force us to undertake their defense. I agree that we should withdrawal of troops and assets
