The college admissions bribery case has left people fuming. Stories of wealthy, well-connected parents allegedly paying large bribes to buy their kids seats in top-tier universities or high scores on college admission exams have stoked disgust and angry calls for the accused to be punished. But prosecutors cannot bring a case on outrage alone. In filing criminal charges last week against 50 people alleged to have played roles in the wide-ranging scam, the U.S. attorney in Boston embarked on an ambitious and, in some regards, uncertain legal odyssey, legal experts said.

Wadda" you mean no crime? Isn´t it against the law to bribe someone to obtain something you are not entitled to in return?

Crime!!!
What Crime???
Don´t you know who I am???
Clearly, the children of our elite are as smart and articulate as (a brick)their parents.
Even us deplorables were warned about the Harvard/Yale scam of legacies versus someone with high enough grades to get in.
A real education does not depend upon who you know, but what you know(about who you know)...

The crime, my two brainless wonders is tax evasion. It is claiming a bribe as a charitable contribution and writing it off on your tax returns. It is in the case of the man who ran the phony scam, setting up a front charity much like the Clinton Foundation to accept money for his own use. The Clintons of course are much more subtle they pay their daughter 600,000 plus perks through their little money laundering scheme. This guy must have thought he was a Clinton to think that the double standard existed for him too. The crime also is mail fraud since there were an awful lot of things that transpired through the mail. There is plenty to work with if the prosecutors don´t get paid off themselves that is.

We need to get Mueller involved in this one!
Transferring money related to fraud thru federal regulated financial institutions is a federal crime. Not paying income tax on fraudulently obtained income is a federal crime (remember Al Capone). Of course claiming fraud expenses on your taxes is a federal crime.

Kickbacks are a crime. Someone at the colleges received payment for getting these kids in, however, the college who was paying the salary of this someone was unaware of these payments and not the beneficiary of these payments. It´s the same as stealing from your employer. Also, as other have stated, tax fraud is a crime. This is white color crime and shouldn´t be sugar coated because the perps are wealthy.

I understand the tax code on charitable contributions to mean the deduction cannot be claimed if something of equal or greater value was returned. What price can be placed on a fraudulent but successful application for admission?

As long as our tax dollars are used to subsidize universities we are looking at theft to the tune of grand larceny. Paying tuition for substandard students, foreign students and those who can drop a ball through a hoop is also theft from people who actually qualify to go to school and can not gain entry, a decision that will penalize them for the rest of their lives in lost jobs and income. The purpose of these liberal lunatic asylums is education, not reparations or charity.

The crime was "adults" sending their kids to college to learn how to destroy America.

For those that took tax deductions for charitable donations to the fraudulent charity, tax evasion comes to mind.

Ultimate, this scandal involved a few hundred rich kids cheating to get into college over multiple years.
I keep seeing people crying about how "more qualified students" didn´t get in to those colleges because of these cheaters.
Well, every year, thousands of more qualified students don´t get accepted to good schools because less qualified minority students are given special admissions under the banner of "affirmative action".
Thousands more miss out because colleges want dumb jocks who can run fast carrying a football, or shoot a basketball into a hoop consistently. But at least they give their colleges something back in the form of entertainment. The affirmative action students just take up space and often flunk out.
So if we are going to cry about how "unfair" these rich kids were, we need to open the discussion to the whole concept of any less-qualified student getting admission -- and you know nobody wants to open that can of worms!!!!!

When young son went off to college, he heard the litany of do´s and don´ts most parents hope to impart on them. This parent added - you better give it all you have, study, learn as much as you can, don´t do anything to embarrass your parents or yourself and remember to do less is to have robbed someone else of their place at university. That´s when you fall on your knees and pray for your child not to turn into a pinko ; )
