German politicians on Tuesday threatened to expel U.S. Ambassador Richard Grenell over his sharp criticism of Germany’s low defense spending. Grenell took Germany to task for failing to meet its own spending goals, let alone its commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Grenell responded on Monday to advance word that Germany’s new budget plan calls for defense spending to peak at 1.37 percent of national income in 2020, but then begin declining to 1.25 percent by 2023. NATO members are supposed to spend 2 percent on defense, a target the Trump administration has insisted upon

The Europeans are so used to looking down their noses at Americans. I say double down. And if they eject Grinnell, send someone even less appealing.

Whenever lefties bring up the supposed "superiority" of European social safety nets I like reminding them of how different this conversation would be if those same countries actually had to pay for their own defense.
So typical of these folks: none of them want America on top, they just want us "on tap".

This is just noise, the sound of fake outrage trying to disguise embarrassment at being caught doing wrong. In reality, Grenell is just defending American interests and promoting American policy, which is what an ambassador is supposed to do. If that means reminding his host country of its promises (2% of GNP) and shining a light on potentially dangerous decisions (the pipeline), so be it.

Article is little more than the headline. BB I guess is using this as clickbait, but nothing of substance - does not discuss Nordstrom 2 double Ross of Germany by Merkel, expected path that Trump will blast German automakers with same tariff Germany imposes on US autos, usw...

If Germany isn´t contributing to phony NATO, more power to them. NATO had no reason to exist after the end of the Warsaw Pact. US elites like Bill Clinton pretended otherwise seeing its skeleton as a global basis for permanently enslaving US taxpayers to permanent war. NATO opened a massive, glistening new HQ at a cost of $1.2 billion in Brussels in 2017. Colombia joined NATO last year, now Trump´s talking about Brazil joining. I guess the North Atlantic has moved south. Must be global warming.

Guess Germany doesn´t like getting caught out as liars. It really is a bummer.
Hint: If you don´t like being labeled a liar, TELL THE TRUTH and KEEP YOUR PROMISES.

It’s past time to pull all of our military out of Germany. Then watch their economy collapse. They think defense spending is expensive now? Just wait til they have to provide ALL of their defense themselves.

What Ambassador Grenell pointed out is the publically stated position of the President of the USA that all NATO countries spend their agreed to 2% of GNP on defense.
Today’s Germany is a rich country able to pay for its own defense, and the President of the USA is right to demand that all NATO countries pay their fair share when it comes to defense spending.

NATO is a sham. It is the cover for the US to serve as the "mercenary" defenders of Europe against an enemy threat that no longer exists to the benefit of some very prosperous nations. Time to wrap it up over there, bring the boys home, have a Victory Parade, and assume defense of the alliance´s western flank. Our allies can handle the European eastern front on their own.

Would love to see our military bases moved for Germany to Poland. If the Germans want to stand on their own, let them!

FAR: ´´They think defense spending is expensive now? Just wait til they have to provide ALL of their defense themselves.´´
They won´t defend themselves. The ruling class (Germany still has one) will just fully go communist and embrace Russia. They already trade with them. The ruling class will maintain their elite status, while the German people suffer the life of communism.

I knew there was a reason I liked Rick Grenell. I think the man has a future! We need more people like him in our government, conservatives who are willing to tell the truth and stand by it while the arrows fly.
Like their counterparts in our own country, German (EU) bureaucrats are weasels and Frau Merkel is their queen. In spite of that, it looks as if there are still some non-weasels in Germany and many of them are in the military.

Don´t you just hate it when someone tells you yours shoes stink right after you´ve stepped in dog poop? Same situation here about not liking the truth to come out. Also demonstrates that Frau Merkel is a lying leftoid witch.
