Gunning for Judge Kavanaugh
American Thinker, by Daniel John Sobieski

It’s not just the wrongly decided Roe V. Wade decision that liberals fear is in jeopardy with the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh. They also fear their crusade against “semi-automatic” weapons may be exposed as the semantic, visual, and judicial fraud that it is: "If you care about common sense gun violence protection, Judge Kavanaugh is your worst nightmare. (snip) The Second Amendment did not come with an asterisk nor are any of our rights enshrined in the Constitution in any way dependent on technology. Judge Kavanaugh seems to recognize that fact. Excellent commentary.

However, our citizen militias, up until about a century ago, DID have artillery as part of their ´arms´, although cannons were extremely expensive and consumed vast amounts of gunpowder compared to rifles. The 2nd Amendment was widely known to protect private ownership of "arms" - ALL OF THEM, including the most powerful that existed in that time, the cannons.
And private ships had cannons as a matter of course. In fact, substantial numbers of private ships got ´letters of marque´ and fought as privateers along the US coasts with their privately owned ships cannons and caronades.

The "nobody thinks the Second Amendment applies to tanks" is BS. It was intended to apply to ALL ´arms´.

Interesting post, #1.
And it is a sobering thought that the merchant ships sailing near Somalia are hijacked by pirates because the ships are unarmed.
Why are the ships unarmed? Because international law prohibits merchant ships from being armed.
Think about that one.

Actually, #2, one of the massively unreported (doesn´t fit the narrative) stories is that some (many?) of the private ships that traverse that part of the ocean are now armed.

A single Browing M2 .50 caliber machine gun on the bow, and another on the stern is entirely adequate to stop these pirates. The .50 BMG round will punch through any ordinary small boat or ship at over a mile, easily range out to two miles, and on the water from an elevated position, walking the shots into a vessel by correcting from the enormous water splashes is relatively easy.

Two big machine guns, and perhaps six security officers to man them 24/7, with night vision goggles and suddenly the piracy stops.

This was my suggestion a number of years ago, and it has apparently been put in place on a number of vessels, although the media blackout makes it unclear exactly how many.
I am sure that various countries have rules on this sort of thing, but if you have a billion dollar shipping company, it would seem that finding the correct approvals and hiring the right people would be very doable.

FTA: "Guns that fire bullets one at a time such as the AR-15 are useful both in war and peace and are in fact in “common use” by the civilian population of the United States."

Under certain circumstances a musket could still be useful in war but nobody in their right mind brings a musket to a machine gun fight.

The AR-15 never was and never will be suitable for the battlefield. Let´s not feed the lie.

At the time of the revolution the longbow was still a superior weapon. The flintlock musket won economically since you could deploy greater lethality in sheer numbers and speed of mustering and training for the same cost.

Actually Benjamin Franklin proposed we adopt the native short bow.

The spray and pray concept with the M16, yes fully auto, is more analogous to the musket of the revolution in that respect. The best way for a citizen army to spread lethality.

The AR-15 is preferable to an M-16 in a combat situation for one reason, once you switch to full auto the muzzle is jumping all over the place. The secondary concern, besides hitting your target, is conservation of ammunition because you can only carry so much out in the field. The more modern M-4, with 3-shot burst, is also better than full auto.

The merchant ships off Somalia have a workable but expensive solution to ridiculous international law. Once the ship is beyond the 12 mile limit, a helicopter is used to fly the .50 cals out to the security team. Navy gunboats, not subject to that law have wiped out the pirates to almost nothing.

The main point of the article is that civilians carried the same weapon that the army did at the time the 2nd Amendment was written and nobody cried about it.

Many (most?) current issue versions of the M-16, the M-4, are not capable of continuous fully automatic fire, only three shot burst capability. There is a selector with semiauto (one shot per trigger pull) or burst (3 shots per trigger pull). Only a limited number have the older fully auto, as long as you hold the trigger, capability.

Most combat shooting today is with semiauto, not full auto, which wastes ammo, hits little and is discouraged most of the time. The soldiers that I know who have recently spent time in combat much prefer semiauto, aimed fire, with occasional use of bursts, either the mechanically limited 3 shot, or finger controlled short bursts.

Learning about guns from movies is the way to learn things that are not true.

It is a huge scandal that the vast, frightening surveillance powers of our intelligence agencies, normally forbidden from snooping on American citizens, were used to spy on a presidential campaign antagonistic to the sitting president. Robert Mueller’s indictment of 12 officers of the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency, was purely for domestic propaganda purposes.
