Tony Blair yesterday told the EU to overhaul its approach to immigration to stem the growing influence of hard-line leaders. The former Prime Minister said the bloc faced an ‘insidious and dangerous challenge’ that would be worsened by ignoring concerns about immigration. His intervention comes despite his decision not to introduce border restrictions to new EU countries in 2004 being blamed for fuelling anti-immigration sentiment in the UK.Mr Blair, who is campaigning to reverse Brexit, said immigration was a key driver behind the referendum result and urged EU politicians to show they had ‘heard the message’. ‘To put it in blunt contemporary terms:

President Trump failed to tell his aides about a phone call with Justin Trudeau last April - and they only found out about it when they were contacted by the Canadian government, it was reported on Saturday. Officials were left with ´no idea what happened´ during the chat in April 2017 and scrambled to respond to Canada´s readout of the call by producing a vague summary of the conversation based on Trump´s own memory. Following the saga, White House aides urged the president to route future calls with foreign leaders through the Situation Room so a record of the conversation could be

Angela Merkel was taking her weekly sauna this side of Berlin when the Wall came tumbling down, which is why by the time she arrived there the multitude’s jeering, cheering and hammering had faded, as thousands had already poured from east to west, while history marched from west to east. History could wait because the 35-year-old chemist would emerge as the dawning era’s queen, much the way she now emerges as the tragic heroine of the same era’s unfolding dusk. Merkel did not have to rush to the Wall, because history would now make way for the pastor’s daughter, who was

MPs met as Theresa May insisted she united warring factions in her team during the high stales showdown. But if the Brexit hardliners´ clothing was anything to go by, the politicians appeared anything but united. It came after the Prime Minister threatened to sack Foreign Secretary Mr Johnson. LONDON - Iran’s oil minister on Saturday accused U.S. President Donald Trump of insulting OPEC by ordering it to increase production and reduce prices, adding Iranian oil production and exports had not changed as a result of U.S. pressure. Trump accused on Wednesday the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries of driving fuel prices higher, and urged U.S. allies such as Saudi Arabia to pump more if they wanted Washington to continue protecting them against their top foe Iran. “Mr Trump sends every day a new message that creates uncertainty in the market,” Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said in

THERESA May has vowed to accelerate the drive to quit the EU after facing down a Cabinet revolt over her Brexit plans. At a marathon ministerial summit at Chequers, the Prime Minister persuaded her team to unanimously back a 12-point blueprint for Britain´s future relationship with Brussels. "Now we must all move at pace to negotiate our proposal with the EU to deliver the prosperous and secure future all our people deserve," she said. But she was braced for an angry backlash from Eurosceptic Tory MPs after the deal proposed a "free trade area for goods" that will mean the UK adopting

SALISBURY, England - Police wearing protective suits entered a hostel in the southern English city of Salisbury on Friday as counter-terrorism detectives stepped up their investigation into how two people were exposed to the nerve agent Novichok. A team of 100 officers are working to discover how and where a 44-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man, both now critically ill, came across an item contaminated with Novichok, the same toxin used in an attack on Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter four months ago. Mitt Romney spoke out against "trade wars" on Friday after President Trump imposed tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese imports, prompting Beijing to respond with its own tariffs on U.S. goods. “Trade wars are a tax on Americans. They have severe consequences for many employers and inevitably cost Americans jobs,” the Utah GOP Senate hopeful said in a statement. Romney said trade wars are particularly punishing for agriculture, which is a sector in Utah the former GOP presidential contender said is “already under duress from wildfire, drought, and challenging public land policies.” “Our national objective should be to open new markets, negotiate free

The Episcopal Church formed a committee Wednesday to “provide a pathway” toward revising the Book of Common Prayer to include gender-neutral language. June 2018 was an especially bad month for the status of Muslims in America. First, we learned that a new study showed that many Americans view Muslims in the United States as insufficiently “American,” and almost 20 percent would deny Muslim citizens the right to vote. Then, the Supreme Court upheld President Donald Trump’s decision to institute a ban on immigrants, refugees and visa holders from five majority-Muslim countries in a 5-4 decision. The synergy of these two pieces of information is critical because it reveals a common attitude that Muslims pose a threat to U.S. security whether they are
