Smokey Bear the (Unwitting) Arsonist:
The Culture War and Western Wildfires

American Spectator, by Will Smith

"We held then, and we hold now, that economics alone is not a sufficient basis for determining whether wilderness shall survive or die,” said Secretary Orville L. Freeman in reference to the construction of Interstate 70 in Colorado in 1968. This sentiment, imbued with an almost religious confidence, embodies the defiant attitude of liberal environmentalism that still haunts the United States. As wildfires rip through California, Colorado, and New Mexico, it must not be forgotten how we arrived here. Smokey needs more paws to get the job done or, at the very least, more cash. I don´t know about privatizing, but the federal government has allowed passionate "nature lovers" who have no real life experience with how to manage land to ignore the generations of practical knowledge that American ranchers and farmers and the lumber industry understood long before the forest service and the EPA and all the rest of the government powers came on the scene. The collective government forbids back burning and everything else that use to prevent massive wildfires. (Predictably, the new government solution is to find some business to blame and sue for the fires.)

Part of the problem in the west is large swaths of trees killed by pine beetles. Enviros take the Forest Service to court over every attempt to fight the beetles - spraying, clear-cutting infested areas and so on. As a result, a drive along I-70 through the Colorado mountains is an tour of tinder waiting for a spark.

TEL AVIV — The Mossad agents moving in on a warehouse in a drab commercial district of Tehran knew exactly how much time they had to disable the alarms, break through two doors, cut through dozens of giant safes and get out of the city with a half-ton of secret materials: six hours and 29 minutes. The morning shift of Iranian guards would arrive around 7 a.m., a year of surveillance of the warehouse by the Israeli spy agency had revealed, and the agents were under orders to leave before 5 a.m. to have enough time to escape. Once the Iranian custodians arrived, it would be instantly clear that someone had stolen much of the

The 2018 World Series of Poker champion is an Indiana resident and professional player who barely missed the cut for the final table two years ago. John Cynn won the series´ marquee no-limit Texas Hold ´em main event Sunday in Las Vegas, surrounded by a cheering crowd that included his dad. He eliminated Tony Miles on the 442th hand of the final table, after playing 199 hands just against each other with bricks of $100 bills and a gold bracelet at the table. Cynn, 33, became $8.8 million richer after playing against Miles for more than 10 hours. He was visibly shocked,

“They caught the witches.” Those were the celebratory words of John Podesta, chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, in response to the indictment Friday of 12 Russian military intelligence officers for hacking efforts linked to the 2016 election. Only hours before, President Donald Trump repeated his favorite mantra, calling the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller a “rigged witch hunt.” Trump always has been wrong about the Mueller investigation, which many supported after he fired then-FBI Director James Comey. As this investigation once again proves, there be witches in those woods. The question, however, is the type of witches we

Watching FBI agent Peter Strzok battle with Congress, my initial reaction was pure anger. His repeated, arrogant insistence that he had done nothing wrong despite tons of evidence to the contrary convinced me he deserved immediate firing — if not the firing squad. Gradually, though, anger gave way to amazement as Strzok grew increasingly combative and condescending. Given his predicament, the sneering and smirking were stupid, and yet he persisted. Who is this jerk, I wondered, and how in the hell did he get to be a big shot at the FBI? And why are taxpayers still paying for the privilege of

President Trump outraged European opinion by denouncing his allies on the far side of the Atlantic for their failure to meet NATO’s spending target of 2% of GDP. Trump’s remonstrations will fall on deaf ears. Why should Europeans spend money on arms, when they have no intention of using them? A recent opinion poll found that small minorities in the core European members of NATO were willing to fight for their country under any circumstances. Other alliance members, he added, should spend 4% of their output on defense, just like America does. His dudgeon at the Europeans was more than justified: the

Wherever the president went, the media followed, obsessed with allegations the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians to win the 2016 presidential election, along with other issues involving Russia. Plaintiff attorney Steven Donziger’s attempted looting of Chevron for spurious environmental crimes in Ecuador ranks among the biggest legal scams in history. The law finally caught up to Mr. Donziger this week as a New York court pulled his legal license. Readers may recall Mr. Donziger’s years-long effort to shake down Texaco (now merged with Chevron) for its alleged failure to clean up oil pits that it had drilled in Ecuador during the 1970s. Chevron claimed it had cleaned up the pits, but the plaintiff attorney exploited the left’s loathing of Big Oil and Ecuador’s shaky legal system. Many in the

The indictment Friday of 12 Russian military officers for the election hacks against the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s campaign lends a surprising new detail to the 2016 election interference timeline: The Kremlin’s hackers apparently still maintained a foothold in the DNC’s network four months after the Democrats announced that they’d locked the intruders out. Until today, the story of the DNC hack ended promptly on June 14, 2016, when the Democrats went public with the intrusion in the pages of the Washington Post, and Crowdstrike, the security firm hired to respond to the breach, published a detailed technical account. Why is it that none of the former Ohio State University wrestlers are claiming to have told Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, they were “sexually abused,” but the media keep saying they did? And it’s striking how “sexual abuse” is a phrase only used by news reports describing what happened at the school, while none of the school’s former wrestlers who were coached by Jordan are quoted recalling it that way at the time. Rather than horrific accounts of being physically violated, most of the ex-wrestlers actually describe remembering their experience with the creepy Dr. Richard Strauss as something more like fraternity hazing.

A quick way to come to wisdom about yourself is to understand this: you are what you do. You´re not your good intentions. You´re not your noble feelings. Your deeds are what make you who you are. A man who beats his wife then cries in remorse is a wife-beater. That´s all he is. When he stops punching her — stops for good — then he has a chance to become something else. Then he can cry all he wants. Until then, his tears mean jack-diddly crap. He´s a wife beater. That´s all. Our friends on the left should learn this

The royal father and son apparently shared their desire to not take part in the arrangements during informal discussions regarding the president’s four-day tour. However even on working trips dignitaries expect to see more members of the royal family than only the Queen. Americans are encouraged to embrace diversity and be culturally sensitive to those who have flouted our laws and invaded our nation. Meanwhile, illegal aliens arriving in America have no such requirement. Instead, trespassing tribes relocate, and when they do, rather than assimilate, they transfer habits and activities indigenous to the countries from whence they migrated. Thus, Americans suffer from illnesses that are easily traceable to third-world bathroom habits (TWBH) and lack of hygiene in the developing world.
