Smokey Bear the (Unwitting) Arsonist:
The Culture War and Western Wildfires

American Spectator, by Will Smith

"We held then, and we hold now, that economics alone is not a sufficient basis for determining whether wilderness shall survive or die,” said Secretary Orville L. Freeman in reference to the construction of Interstate 70 in Colorado in 1968. This sentiment, imbued with an almost religious confidence, embodies the defiant attitude of liberal environmentalism that still haunts the United States. As wildfires rip through California, Colorado, and New Mexico, it must not be forgotten how we arrived here. Smokey needs more paws to get the job done or, at the very least, more cash. I don´t know about privatizing, but the federal government has allowed passionate "nature lovers" who have no real life experience with how to manage land to ignore the generations of practical knowledge that American ranchers and farmers and the lumber industry understood long before the forest service and the EPA and all the rest of the government powers came on the scene. The collective government forbids back burning and everything else that use to prevent massive wildfires. (Predictably, the new government solution is to find some business to blame and sue for the fires.)

Part of the problem in the west is large swaths of trees killed by pine beetles. Enviros take the Forest Service to court over every attempt to fight the beetles - spraying, clear-cutting infested areas and so on. As a result, a drive along I-70 through the Colorado mountains is an tour of tinder waiting for a spark.

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland — Francesco Molinari became Italy’s first major champion after firing a closing two-under-par 69 to win the British Open at Carnoustie on Sunday. The 35-year-old from Turin underlined his status as the hottest player in world golf by finishing with an eight-under total of 276. Molinari beat Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy and Kevin Kisner by two strokes. Molinari, playing alongside former world No. 1 Tiger Woods in the final round, produced a joyful fist pump and hugged his caddie after holing a 5-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole. It was the Italian’s third victory in five starts. He also ended as

During President Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Associated Press reporter Jonathan Lemire asked him about Russian interference in the 2016 election. Trump — as he has done many times before — responded with an answer that cast doubt on the U.S. intelligence agencies’ assessment of massive Russian election-interference. Here’s the exchange: LEMIRE: “Just now, President Putin denied having anything to do with the election interference in 2016. Every U.S. intelligence agency has concluded that Russia did … who do you believe?” TRUMP: “So let me just say that we have two thoughts. You have groups that

A private inspector said Saturday that he warned the company operating duck boats on a Missouri lake about design flaws putting the watercraft at greater risk of sinking, less than a year before the accident that killed 17 people during a sudden storm. Steve Paul, owner of the Test Drive Technologies inspection service in the St. Louis area, said he issued a written report for the company in August 2017. It explained why the boats´ engines — and pumps that remove water from their hulls — might fail in inclement weather. He also told The Associated Press that the tourist boats´ canopies

Since 2012, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadoran embassy in London trying to evade a warrant for his arrest from the Swedish government on sexual assault charges. The Ecuadorans granted him asylum because he said he feared being handed over to the American government for exposing millions of classified documents. Apparently, Assange has overstayed his welcome. According to The Intercept, the new Ecuadoran president, Lenin Moreno, is prepared to transfer custody of Assange to the British. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told senior Republicans that he will schedule Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation vote on a date just before the November elections if Democrats demand access to the full scope of records the judge produced in the George W. Bush administration. Democrats are leveraging the access dispute to slow Kavanaugh’s nomination, as it is one of the few mechanisms they have to delay progress on the appointment. Politico reports that McConnell believes scheduling a confirmation vote in immediate proximity to the midterm elections will exacerbate political pressure on embattled Democrats from red states to support Kavanaugh. “To

Pearl Harbor. Kristallnacht. Treason. High crimes and misdemeanors. These are some of the hyperventilating left’s overheated and ludicrous characterizations of President Trump’s remarks at his Helsinki press conference with Vladimir Putin. Listening to the Democrats and their wholly owned media subsidiary, you would have thought that Trump had (a) smilingly handed Putin a large red “reset” button or (b) had been caught on a hot mic during a global nuclear security summit murmuring to Putin’s representative that, after the midterm elections, he would have more flexibility in his dealings with Russia or (c) had signed off on a deal to give

For many donors, Help the Vets sounded like a great cause: The group said contributions would benefit disabled veterans by helping pay for medical care, assist with suicide prevention, even fund family retreats. As it turned out, however, Help the Vets was a “sham charity” that primarily benefited its founder and president, Neil G. “Paul” Paulson, who raised $11 million over three years by misleading soft-hearted contributors, according to a complaint filed Wednesday by federal and state authorities. Fed up with charitable scams that exploit public sympathy for veterans, the Federal Trade Commission struck back Thursday by unveiling Operation Donate

SANTA BARBARA, Calif — From Malibu to Santa Cruz, wealthy people are blocking access to California’s publicly owned beaches. And no group has fought the public longer than the gated community of Hollister Ranch, about 130 miles north of Los Angeles. For more than 36 years, residents there have spent millions of dollars on lawyers and lobbyists to bar the hoi polloi from an 8.5-mile-long beach adorned with several coves. In May, after more than four years of litigation over public access to the beach, a settlement was announced between the ranch cooperative, on one side, and the California Coastal Commission
