Smokey Bear the (Unwitting) Arsonist:
The Culture War and Western Wildfires

American Spectator, by Will Smith

"We held then, and we hold now, that economics alone is not a sufficient basis for determining whether wilderness shall survive or die,” said Secretary Orville L. Freeman in reference to the construction of Interstate 70 in Colorado in 1968. This sentiment, imbued with an almost religious confidence, embodies the defiant attitude of liberal environmentalism that still haunts the United States. As wildfires rip through California, Colorado, and New Mexico, it must not be forgotten how we arrived here. Smokey needs more paws to get the job done or, at the very least, more cash. I don´t know about privatizing, but the federal government has allowed passionate "nature lovers" who have no real life experience with how to manage land to ignore the generations of practical knowledge that American ranchers and farmers and the lumber industry understood long before the forest service and the EPA and all the rest of the government powers came on the scene. The collective government forbids back burning and everything else that use to prevent massive wildfires. (Predictably, the new government solution is to find some business to blame and sue for the fires.)

Part of the problem in the west is large swaths of trees killed by pine beetles. Enviros take the Forest Service to court over every attempt to fight the beetles - spraying, clear-cutting infested areas and so on. As a result, a drive along I-70 through the Colorado mountains is an tour of tinder waiting for a spark.

The Mass Shooting Nobody

In the pre-dawn hours yesterday, the nation experienced yet another mass shooting. One dead, 22 injured, including a 13-year-old boy. It took place at the crowded Art All Night Trenton festival in New Jersey. To their limited credit, a couple of cable news outlets mentioned the shooting in their coverage yesterday and this morning. The New York Times wrote a rather lengthy article about it, though it showed up on page A-17. It received similarly “not prominent” coverage in other major papers. The Associated Press took a fairly deep dive on it, but you need to search around a bit

We have two choices when it comes to border security and interior enforcement. We can continue telegraphing the message that when you come here with children you are home free. This will continue fueling the drug crisis, growing MS-13, enriching the drug cartels, inducing sex trafficking and terrible crimes at the border, encouraging illegals to kidnap children to gain admission, and causing death and mayhem on both sides of the border. Or we could finally deter this behavior by announcing an end to any immigration requests not processed in a controlled environment through our embassy. If you are concerned about

Political spinning about the Department of Justice’s Inspector General’s report that came out last Thursday is all about shiny bits and pieces of the report. It misses the events outside the report’s four corners that magnify its importance tenfold. Let’s pull back on the stick, gain some altitude, and examine some of the more important facts. When we do, we have to conclude that the Augean Stables on Pennsylvania Avenue — the Justice Department building and, across the street, the J. Edgar Hoover FBI building — have to be cleaned out. The IG’s report, which lays out the results of its examination

When David and Shirley Pirlott filed a federal labor complaint against Teamsters Local 75 on Nov. 8, 1987, the day before the Berlin Wall fell, they did not imagine they would have to wait 30 years to resolve the dispute. The Pirlotts were finally vindicated in March 2018 when the Wisconsin-based Teamsters local mailed them separate checks of about $3,000 for failing to allow them to opt out of union dues. The case spanned five presidencies, dozens of National Labor Relations Board members, and numerous appearances before the D.C. Court of Appeals. In the time it took for the NLRB to

It seems that by his own conception, James Comey is St. James, heavenly protector of patriotism and principle. Which is only to say, few men in American history have possessed as thoroughly a misguided self-awareness as our former FBI director. As we now know, the erstwhile hero of the Trump Resistance had both mismanaged and misappropriated his power in ways that may have irreparably undermined the reputation of the most powerful enforcement agency in the United States. When the Justice Department’s internal watchdog dropped a report on the Hillary Clinton e-mail investigation last week, we learned Comey wasn’t merely incompetent, nor was

Onside the Republican party, President Trump is riding high and his critics seem to be running scared. He enjoys sky-high approval ratings from voters who identify with the GOP, and his Republican critics are paying a price for crossing him. On Tuesday, the day that voters went to the polls in South Carolina, Trump slammed GOP representative Mark Sanford and urged Republicans to vote for his rival in the congressional race in the state’s first district: TheRealDonaldTrump @RealDonad_Trump Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA. He is MIA and nothing but trouble. He is better off in Argentina.

Brooks Koepka became the first man in 29 years to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles Sunday as he shot a 2-under 68 to hold off hard-charging Englishman Tommy Fleetwood by one stroke at Shinnecock Hills. Facing a course setup and weather conditions that were far more docile than in Saturday’s third round, Koepka moved to the front quickly by birdieing three of the first five holes. But a bogey at No. 6 pulled Koepka back toward the pack and he had to scramble to only drop one shot at the par-3 11th after he airmailed the green with a pitching wedge

In late October of 2016 James Comey knew Donald Trump’s candidacy was as dead as a doornail. That must be distinctly understood or nothing wonderful can come from the story I am going to relate. Time soothes the edges of old emotions. We forget the shock of that election night. Almost two years now of articles and TV takes, even books, make Trump’s election seem understandable, even sometimes inevitable. But that’s not how it was then. When FBI director Comey and the FBI dropped their late October Anthony Weiner surprise, they did so fully confident that Hillary Clinton would win. What

Consider, for example, what CNN’s Jim Acosta shouted this week in Singapore at Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s potbellied boy-dictator. “Will you give up your nuclear weapons, sir?" the CNN reporter asked before Kim and President Trump had even sat down for their planned summit on the denuclearization

Roseanne Barr has become untouchable due to the "Valerie Jarrett/Ambien/Planet of the Apes" controversy, irrevocably contaminated by racism. This presents a problem for ABC, which canceled her revived show but wants the show to return in some form because it had high ratings. The apparent solution is to create a new show focused on the daughter character "Darlene," which would exclude Roseanne. Unfortunately, Roseanne Barr owns a chunk of the show, and ABC doesn´t want to be seen letting Barr profit from it, so ABC is in talks to buy the show from Barr so she would not technically profit

The Justice Department’s tepid OIG report, with its risible assertion that there was no political bias in the FBI’s Clinton email probe, suggests that it was written by people afraid to tell the unvarnished truth about the conduct of the federal government’s police apparatus, an agency that openly defies congressional oversight and has participated in a vendetta against a sitting president. The FBI’s leadership clearly hopes that the Democrats will win majorities in Congress and put a halt to the investigations into its multifarious abuses of power. The OIG is loath to face the ruthless reprisals that would inevitably follow
