A series of anniversary screenings of the Dambusters will include the controversial name of the film´s dog - it has been confirmed. The movie features a black Labrador, who was the mascot for RAF 617 squadron, called N*****. But the studio behind the anniversary screenings - which are due to take place on the 75th anniversary of the mission it was based on - said the canine´s name will not be removed. A statement from Studiocanal, the distributor of the film, said: ´While we acknowledge some of the language used in The Dam Busters reflects historical attitudes which audiences may find offensive, for

Why not just call the dog Fluffy? I´m sure the hero of the film would be so pleased to have his life edited.

If you wanna be accurate, then be accurate and don´t worry about "feelings" it´s what his name was and let it be at that.
Everybody gets so in a dither about some things from history, so what. We can´t change history. All these statues being pulled down is foolish, just like getting all upset about a dog name. Get a life people.

film made 75 years ago. How will people know sensibilities of prior generations if it isn´t shown just as it was made? Maybe someday Disney will release Song Of The South.

Here’s a true story from my childhood. Some country relatives had a dog with the same name as this one. As a small child I was unaware of any negative connotation associated with the name. Once when we were visiting, some of the family were going to take a train to a wedding and I wanted to go along. An older relative warned me that there would be n*****s on the train and all I could envision were big dogs sitting in the seats. I didn’t see what the problem was since I really liked the one I knew.

It is important because the dog was the beloved pet of the mission´s leader, Guy Gibson, and just before the raid the dog was hit by a car and killed. Subsequently the code word to be radioed back to base upon the breaching of the dams was the dog´s name. It is an historical fact that cannot be ignored simply because it may bother people.

The n-word meant something different than racial, back then. This film will never open in American theaters, because liberals never read history, and theater owners will be afraid of riots.

Yes, we sure are living through the Golden Age of Umbrage, everyone taking offense at every possible slight, real or imagined. But in this case, that word truly hurts and offends millions, so why would you press the point. I want statues for truly great men like Robert E. Lee and I will explain to anyone why, but a hurtful word in a movie for the sake of historical accuracy? Nope.

Such an awful word, except you scan the urban channels and you will hear it every 10 seconds 24/7. I know the justification. Depowering by claiming it, but it´s funny the outcome is a more violent, cruder, more dangerous, new segregation. It´s not really cool or hip. It only glorifies thugs who toss it around stinking up the culture as they demean every female by just as often using the B word.

There are a million edits, substitutions or outright lies in any ´historical´ film. The amount of confusion, anger and distraction of sticking to this fact should not be worth the effort. It was a great achievement of science, planning and most of all raw courage. Show THAT. If the film makers could portray the terror of being in that bomber flying into the heaviest German anti-aircraft fire, as well as Spielberg did putting the audience into a landing craft for the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan, they would have a cinematic achievement millions would remember the rest of their lives. Instead of making a film remembered only for a dog´s nickname.

So every black dog called "blackie" must incur an enforced name change. "Niger" is simply "black" or "backie" in Latin and that is all it meant for its owner at the time with no political overtones whatsoever. Nothing worse than historical revision to satisfy modern ´sensitivities". Wonder whether the countries of Nigeria and Niger should be forced to change its name, and the world itself banned from the Latin language, and all the famous classical motets like "Pulchra et Nigra" (Beautiful and Black) and "Nigra sum et formosa"(I am black and I am beautiful)
