Rolling Stones star Keith Richards has told of the band´s bad experience with Donald Trump before he became US president. The rockers were left bruised after Trump was their promoter in 1989, on their Steel Wheels tour. The guitarist, 74, said the encounter left him demanding: ´You´ve got to get rid of this man!´ Richards told the BBC: ´He was the promoter for us in Atlantic City. It was (billed as) Donald Trump presents the Rolling Stones, (which was) in miniature. ´We never have much to do with promoters usually, but this one got me. That was the last time

Going back a long ways to bash Trump. It’s pathetic. Keith we love you just keep playing music and say out of politics ok. You will lose half your fan base by going political.

Many years ago Dean Martin approached the United States Golf Association (USGA) and suggested that the tournament might get a boost if it could be called "The Dean Martin U.S. Open."

He and Jerry Lewis had, after all, done The Caddy (1953, with the song "That´s Amore," sung by Dean), a comedy musical that features cameos with famous professionals of the day such as Hall of Famers Ben Hogan, Julius Boros, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, and the long-hitting Jimmy Thomson.

The USGA said, in effect, thanks Dean, but we think the tournament can survive on its own.

I understand then civilian Trump´s desire to disseminate his name and brand far and wide--he´s done a good job of that anyway--but the Rolling Stones, not anyone else, are the headliners when they are on tour. That´s not negotiable. Why should a promoter, no matter who he is, put his name above theirs? I agree with Keef on this one.

Keith Richards: "I don´t have a problem with drugs. I have a problem with the police." And "I only get ill when I give up drugs."

Both of those witty but true utterances are from forty or more years ago. Today the band´s four mainstays (Mick Jagger, Richards, drummer Charlie Watts, and bassist/guitarist Ron Wood; bassist Bill Wyman retired some years back) are in their mid to late 70s. It´s amazing that they are still performing with great energy and professionalism. I would submit that Richards learned his lesson; he nearly ODed more than once four decades ago, and was fortunate not to have gone to gaol in Canada in 1978 after being busted with heroin. If he hadn´t cleaned up, he´d have been dead by 1980.

Keef´s autobiography, Life, published in 2010, is one of the best such books I´ve ever read, full of astonishing detail and street/world-wise knowledge gained by over a half century living the life of a rock star with a lot of ups and downs. He´s a survivor, and seems to have forgotten nothing. I don´t necessarily agree with the old dictum "If you remember the ´Sixties, you weren´t there" (wherever "there" is), attributed to Grace Slick).

If #4 has the slightest interest in rock and roll, I highly recommend Keith´s book. Totally fascinating, well written, wry, honest, tragic, sometimes moving. The account of how he wrote "Gimme Shelter"* while sitting in a car outside a movie studio, dying inwardlu, is worth the price of admission.

As all know, I now have great affection for PDJT, and am a strong supporter of most of his policies. But sometimes he can be a bit too much. It doesn´t really matter. It´s who he is.

*From 1969´s Let It Bleed album: Gimme Shelter: 100% Keith; You Can´t Always Get What You Want: 100% Mick. Lots of detail like that.

It´s well know how hard it´s been since 1989 for the Rolling Bones financially. I think he is right, that tour didn´t get old Keith enough money or recognition. Still they made out a lot better than all the black blues men they ripped off. Be happy Keith. Without the Beatles inspiring Mick to write songs you would have stayed in England.

Keith thinks the Beatles were overrated compared to the Stones. He is wrong about a lot of things.

If you go back and read articles from the time, the Steel Wheels tour was considered a huge success, one that put the Rolling Stones back on the top. There is even an article in Rolling Stone magazine that stated...

"With a kind of crazed appropriateness, the Convention Center shows were presented by Trump Plaza, owned by Donald Trump, the perfect person to place the cherry on the cake of a tour as distinguished for its marketing as for its music. It was an odd experience indeed to wander the plush corridors of the casino hotel as gamblers caroused to the apocalyptic strains of "Gimme Shelter" wafting over a sound system more accustomed to Muzak."

Hmmm...

Thanks, #15, FWIW "Gimme Shelter" is the greatest rock song of all time IMO.

I can´t find the link now how Merry Clayton was called from her bed that night to sing background on the song, probably leading to the loss of the baby she carried.

To answer #33´s tacit question: Keith sat outside the movie studio in his car, clutching the steering wheel, trying not to go out of his mind. Inside the building, his woman, the one he would soon marry and have son Marlon with, the beautiful and fetching Anita Pallenberg, was making an adult film, doing a very explicit sex scene with Mick Jagger, a scene that was so meltingly hot it won awards in multiple Scandinavian porn festivals.

Keith was more upset than he had ever been, then the words started coming, and he took out his notebook. "Oh, the storm is threatening my very life today, if I don´t get some shelter, yeah, I´m gonna fade away ... War, children, it´s just a shot away, it´s just a shot away... Love, sister, it´s just a kiss away, it´s just a kiss away...." Wow.

I agree that it´s probably the most powerful and greatest song by the Stones, and one of the greatest rock songs of all time. [Link to live version from not too long ago below]

Liberals will be shocked to hear this. Yes, I finally agree. You’ve won over Wayne Root with evidence and common sense. It’s time to impeach the president. However, it’s not President Trump I’m talking about. It’s time to impeach former President Barack Obama. And of course, prosecute him too. Many are starting to come to this conclusion. Tom Fitton, the legal genius behind Judicial Watch (the number one government watchdog in America), has come to the same conclusion. Fitton said this week that amidst a climate of impeachment fervor, the actual evidence points to Obama’s actions warranting impeachment far more than

Going forward, federal workers must spend 75 percent of their time on government work -- some currently spend none -- and agencies must publicly post union contracts in an online repository. Its #2 diplomat, Kim Kye Gwan, offered a more conciliatory statement expressing the regime’s “willing[ness] to give time and opportunity to the US side with a big and open mind.” This morning, Trump offered a signal that the summit might take place after all: (Tweet) Does that mean the summit is back on? Not quite, but it will probably prompt North Korea to start showing up to planning meetings rather

NEW YORK — In his newly released book, Sen. John McCain admits he knew the anti-Trump dossier that he infamously passed to the FBI contained “unproven accusations,” “mostly raw, unverified intelligence” and allegations about which the senator “had no idea” if “any were true.” Yet McCain maintains he had an “obligation” to pass the wild charges against Donald Trump to FBI Director James Comey and he would even do it again. “Anyone who doesn’t like it can go to hell,” McCain exclaimed. In the book The Restless Wave, McCain provides an inside account of how he says he came across

The public face of the gun-control movement demanded $1 million Thursday from the Florida-based grocery chain in a tweet, just one day after calling for a “die-in” protest at its stores. Publix is being targeted by Mr. Hogg for its support of Adam Putnam, a Republican gubernatorial candidate who is now the state’s agricultural commissioner. The Tampa Bay Times reported earlier this week that Publix had given $670,000 during the last three years to Putnam campaigns. Mr. Hogg not only sought atonement money from the grocery chain in Thursday’s tweet, he also demanded a pledge of ideological fealty to the

President Barack Obama took a light swing at his successor during a tech conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday. His eight years in office were scandal free, he told the audience. "I didn´t have scandals, which seems like it shouldn´t be something you brag about," Obama joked. President Donald Trump’s presidency has thus far been racked with scandalous allegations, but Obama later hedged his barb. "But actually,” he said, “if you look at the history of the modern presidency, coming out of the modern presidency without anybody going to jail is really good. It´s a big deal." The reason his

Some NFL players are reportedly considering new ways to protest after NFL owners voted on a new national anthem policy Wednesday, reports Sports Illustrated´s Robert Klemko. According to Klemko, some are discussing ways to skirt new rules "just to spite the NFL." The policy removes a requirement for players to be on the field for the anthem, and gives players the option to stay in the locker room. Teams will be fined for any personnel that "do not show proper respect for the flag and Anthem” on the sidelines. Other journalists were hearing similar things from players they talked to.

On Monday, Netflix announced that it had signed a multimillion deal with former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, and on Wednesday, Obama spoke publicly about the deal for the first time. (Snip) He recounted his first job out of college as a community organizer, helping bring various factions together to solve local problems from crime to underfunded schools. An older, experienced community organizer told the young Obama at the time that before he started to suggest solutions to problems, he should spend a month talking to people and hearing their stories. Thursday at the New York State Democratic Party’s convention on Long Island, former Vice President Joe Biden said the Republican Party in the era of President Donald Trump had abandoned American values in favor of “phony populism” and “fake nationalism.” Biden said,”This is not your father’s Republican Party. This is a different deal. They are not, they are not who we are. They are not who America is. But what they are doing is they sending a vision of America around the world that is distorted. That is damaging. That is hurting us with this phony populism and this fake

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., argued Thursday that North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un is the "big winner" after President Trump canceled the planned summit between the two next month in Singapore. "I think it´s a good thing for Kim Jong Un," Pelosi told reporters during her weekly press conference about how plans for the meeting elevated Kim´s status. "They were on par with each other. He got global recognition and regard. He´s the big winner." "When he got this letter from the president saying ´OK, never mind´ — he must be having a giggle fit right there in

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said Wednesday that if you don’t understand how the FBI hurt Hillary Clinton and not Donald Trump in the 2016 election, you’re “too stupid to handle household appliances.” WATCH: (Video) “Everything the FBI did in the home stretch was to Donald Trump’s benefit and Hillary Clinton’s detriment. Clinton’s detriment, including McCabe’s leak,” Scarborough said.) Democrats and their media allies are again shouting “constitutional crisis,” this time claiming President Trump has waded too far into the Russia investigation. The howls are a diversion from the actual crisis: the Justice Department’s unprecedented contempt for duly elected representatives, and the lasting harm it is doing to law enforcement and to the department’s relationship with Congress. The conceit of those claiming Mr. Trump has crossed some line in ordering the Justice Department to comply with oversight is that “investigators” are beyond question. We are meant to take them at their word that they did everything

John Brennan, President Obama’s former CIA director, again used his verified Twitter account Saturday to lash out at President Trump, this time by threatening House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). (Snip) Brennan did not explain what “major responsibility” Ryan and McConnell will “bear,” but as America’s former chief spy, Brennan probably has all kinds of Deep State ties, methods, and contacts at his disposal. Democrats will be allowed inside the top secret White House meeting where law enforcement and intelligence officials plan to reveal information about the use of an FBI informant during the 2016 campaign. The White House gave into demands from party leaders to be in the room and is expected to invite the ´Gang of 8,´ a bipartisan group of House and Senate leadership to attend, ABC News reported. The details are still being worked out and the gathering may happen after the next congressional recess, which ends on June 4, instead of Thursday.
