Black woman golfer: It was like

YORK, Pa. -- One of five black women golfers who were told to leave a Pennsylvania club said Tuesday it felt like they were playing "with targets on our backs." Representatives of the Grandview Golf Club in York told the group at the second hole they were playing too slowly Saturday, said Sandra Harrison. After the ninth hole, an hour-and-a-half later, the group of white men told them they took too long a break and needed to leave. Harrison said she and two other women left because they were so rattled by the treatment. "It was like we were playing

Comments:
These everyday occurrences have nothing to do with race. They were playing too slowly and probably creating a logjam on the course. But maybe Starbucks will be sympathetic.

According to the article the women are well known and part of a group of very experienced golfers. Something odd here.

It´s generally good manners to let faster players play through. There is nothing more frustrating than playing behind a group that are constantly talking, drinking, and spending inordinate amounts of time hunting lost balls.

As #4 posted, if was only an hour and a half then that´s pretty quick playing. Something funny going on here. A lot of clubs will ask you to leave if you hold up play. St. Andrews requires a 16 handicap and will toss you for being too slow.

Too many blacks thinks ordinary everyday happenings are because they are black. No, it is because you are in front of someone. Nothing drives some people madder than having someone in front of them. That is your offense. It happens to all of us. Let them pass you, the purpose being to get rid of them as fast as possible, and to continue to enjoy your day, and be safe.

More likely gender than race. It was a Saturday. Lots of clubs reserve Saturdays for men only. Cause they are more important. And spend more money. And own the club.

Seems if this was about race then the course management wouldn´t have let them play with five players rather than the normal four. Much ado about nothing.

I can answer that, #2, #5. They are trying to finish the course before the score catches up with them.

Five women of any color in front of me in any line would drive me mad. No racism there. Sexism, maybe.

I invented a came called "Mortar Ball" in which the players shoot golf balls at each other with air canons. If you miss your opponent, that counts as a ´stroke´. The looser pays for everyone else´s stitches. It´s fun, it has it´s drama and excitement and no one get´s in your way. Any disputes in the game are quickly settled merely by more play. We played it on abandoned U.S. Air Force bases. (Har!) Beats slow paced regular golf by a mile!

I used to golf regularly at Grand Marais in East St. Louis, a public course. The rudeness, hostility and lack of respect for the game exhibited by the regulars was astounding. Astounding. I was nose to nose with some of them a few times, my last time there it was with the course manager. As I told him, there are other places to golf. I miss the fun, old style little track, the folks, no.

A review of the article indicates they were finishing the second hole when they were told they were playing too slowly. An hour and 45 minutes later, they were at the ninth green. That translates to over 2 hours for nine holes.

They should have let the people behind them play through. There´s no way that any group of women is going to finish 18 holes in less than 4 hours.

Some people several shades darker than I am always hold their hands up and sure enough, they´re skin is brown. That´s the problem alright. It never has anything to do with their conduct, disobeying rules, being rude and as in most cases being disrespectful of others.
This attitude our darker citizens have will forever hold them back from the fruits of being a good citizen and realizing equality is a two way street.

Grandview has its 18 hole round time on the back of its scorecard - 4 hours,15 minutes or less. The first hole is a par 5, the second par 4. Most "average" female golfers have a distance deficit that is amplified on longer hole.

If one considers the final seven holes on the front nine reportedly took 90 minutes (an average of 13 minutes per hole, including time to the next tee) after the first two holes drew a rebuke for slow play...and now with a fifth player, the women´s claimed timing becomes dubious.

Did the starter on the first tee record their tee-off time? That´s common on weekends with pace of play enforced by rangers. Eliminates pace of play arguments.

BTW, Grandview´s local rules prohibit "playing through" on weekends. Were those playing behind them asked by the reporter to corroborate their story? Apparently not. And who authorized a fifth player? On a weekend? Added to an already slow foursome?

Allowing a group of 5 on Saturday is asking for trouble. The article says that a group of white men complained of the slow play coming from the group playing in front of them. Perhaps if it were a group of Jewish Japanese Aborigines that complained, it might have been okay. The article does not address the tell tale sign that would prove that the group of 5 black women were indeed playing too slow........where was the unmentioned group located who were playing in front of the five some? If there was a size able gap there, then they were indeed playing too slow. Fore!

Being a white female golfer I can say we have our issues too. Not the least of which is playing behind both slow women golfers as well as men. A friend and I were accused of holding up play by a group of men behind us. We had to wait to tee off many times because of a group of men ahead of us. They must have had a lot of money bet on the game as it took forever for the putts to fall. One time we were going to play at a municipal course and two men had been assigned to play with us. One refused and joined the group ahead of us. We don’t like to play with men like that anyway. And then rhere was the Air Force Base golf course where women weren’t allowed to play before 1 pm on Saturday - until a new base commander was assigned who played golf. Oops. She was a woman. Good golfer too!

To clarify...the article states that they finished the last 7 holes in an hour and 45 minutes. That´s 15 minutes per hole. Given that, the first two holes should have taken a half hour. Total for the front nine would be 2:15-2:30 making it a 4.5 to 5 hour round. Not horrible, but not fast. One could assume they tried to speed up on the last seven but probably didn´t as they seem clueless or even disdainful of golf etiquette. After being spoken to, then they take a break after 9? I´m sorry but that is just downright belligerent given they were told to speed up. And girls, no one is on you because you´re black, it´s because you´re holding up the course.

Starbucks will allow people to sit in its cafes and use its bathrooms - even if they don´t buy anything. The new policy, announced on Saturday, comes five weeks after two black men were arrested at a Philadelphia store after one asked to use the bathroom before he had made a purchase. Donte Robinson and his friend Rashon Nelson, both 23, had been waiting for a potential business partner to discuss real estate development when one of the men asked to use the bathroom and was knocked back. Minutes after the pair had sat down at the coffee shop, the manager called the police and had Robinson and Nelson arrested.

As California hurtles toward its state primary June 5, it is obvious there´s a problem. Its open primary system — which sends the top two vote-getters to the general election, regardless of party affiliation — is not working as intended and risks throwing the midterm election into acrimony and confusion. This system is called a "jungle primary" for a reason: It is brutal and unpredictable. Former Education Secretary Arne Duncan said parents should pull their children out of school until Congress passes gun control legislation. "What if no children went to school until gun laws changed to keep them safe?" Duncan tweeted Saturday. Duncan, who served as secretary under President Obama, called the step "tragically necessary." "My family is all in if we can do this at scale. Parents, will you please join us?" he said. Duncan´s plea comes one day after 10 people were killed in a mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas.

A Cambridge professor with deep ties to American and British intelligence has been outed as an agent who snooped on the Trump presidential campaign for the FBI. Multiple media outlets have named Stefan Halper, 73, as the secret informant who met with Trump campaign advisers Carter Page and George Papadopoulos starting in the summer of 2016. The American-born academic previously served in the Nixon, Ford and Reagan administrations. The revelation, stemming from recent reports in which FBI sources admitted sending an agent to snoop on the Trump camp, heightens suspicions that the FBI was seeking to entrap

Last week I reported that Internet sleuths had winkled out the name of the spy/agent provocateur that Obama´s intelligence officers had used on the Trump campaign. The New York Times and Washington Post, the Democrats´ semi-official newspapers this week megaphoned the instigators, offering up their justifications without naming his name. Again, the name is Stefan Halper, who, as I wrote here last week, was paid a substantial sum by the Department of Defense´s Office of Net Assessment. If it was for this work – and it suspiciously looks like it because the payments were made in July and September of 2016

As a committed Christian, I was happy to see the open presentation of the Christian faith at Saturday´s Royal Wedding. (snip) In a quick moment, Bishop Curry turned to the socialist world message of "Love." It snuck in through the side door of the church and landed on the lectern with hardly a noise. Curry later compounded his mistake by going down several rabbit trails that had nothing to do with a wedding, including a discussion of slavery. Worse were comments on Dr. King, who certainly was rolling over in his grave by that point, including quoting Dr. King´s favorite

WASHINGTON – Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) predicted that the Republican Party’s “genetic attachment” to the National Rifle Association “might actually cost them” seats in midterm elections. “It’s not as if we are convincing people what the right thing to do is. We’ve won the argument – 90 percent of Americans think that we should have universal background checks. Today, 67 percent of Americans, two-thirds of Americans think that should regulate the purchase and sale of assault weapons,” Murphy said at the Center for American Progress Ideas Conference on Tuesday. Murphy said the Republican Party’s relationship with the NRA has become more important

Boston — The former mayor of New Orleans is being honored for his leadership in removing Confederate memorials in his city. Mitch Landrieu will be presented with the 2018 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for standing behind his decision to take down four monuments. The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation is paying tribute to Landrieu for taking the action despite legal challenges and outright threats from those who insist the Confederacy is an important part of New Orleans’ heritage. President Kennedy’s grandson, Jack Schlossberg, is scheduled to make Sunday night’s presentation.
