Dick´s Sporting Goods will destroy assault-style
rifles pulled from shelves

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, by Stephanie Ritenbaugh

When Dick’s Sporting Goods said it would no longer sell modern sporting rifles at its Field & Stream stores following the Valentine’s Day shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school, one question was what would happen to the unsold firearms in its inventory. Typically a retailer may return unsold merchandise to the manufacturer. But in this case, Dick’s Sporting Goods has decided to destroy them. “We are in the process of destroying all firearms and accessories that are no longer for sale as a result of our February 28th policy change,” a spokeswoman told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “We are destroying the firearms

A win for manufacturers since they already got paid for product that isn´t being distributed to meet demand.

Corporate virtue signaling.
We just know there will be a huge tax write off next year.
I´m surprised the accountant lawyers took this long to work out the tax advantage and get "good press" while they´re at it.
BTW with a full load of bird shot at a relatively close range and a decent pump shotgun, one can do as much damage as one of those "horrible" single action "assault" rifles.

Something tells me that selling so-called assault-style rifles, that mechanically are nothing more than modern semi-automatic rifles, is a very small percentage of Dick’s Sporting Goods business and that they are using the firearms issue as advertising.

Many decades have passed since I dealt with corporate accounting.

But still, it strikes me as odd that Dick´s can take a tax write-off on inventory (firearms) they deliberate destroy.

Or that a manufacturer would take rifles back and give Dick´s a refund when Dick´s deliberately chose to not sell them.

IOW "Virtue signaling" sounds about right.

This was not a business decision, it was an unwise liberal-placating decision. They will lose many more customers than they have counted on. I don´t believe that they will destroy rifles retailing at an average six hundred bucks each with genuine name-brand ARs going for one grand. They will quietly transfer inventory at cost to other retailers or foreign countries. It´s all a big noise-making stunt.

Receiving a tax writeoff would be like smashing your new car with a sledge hammer so you could do the same. Not gonna happen.

I am not sure what the demographic split is on sporting goods customers between conservatives and commies, but don’t know that many anti-civilian-gun-owner commies that are outdoorsmen - would think that group is buying kids soccer gear, spandex jogging stuff and low-end non-pro shop tennis gear.

But to go out of your way and tell at least 50% of your customers to shop somewhere else doesn’t sound like a viable sales strategy for this kind of market, in my humble opinion.

Reminds me of when Purina Chow or somebody similar bought Eddie Bauer expedition outfitters and turned it into a fashion brand - not in business anymore.

The Department of Justice is asking the Supreme Court to abandon its case against Microsoft over international data privacy. A new law signed by President Donald Trump last week answers the legal question at the heart of Microsoft´s case, the DOJ says. So the case "is now moot," the department said in a court filing posted Saturday.
