Bridge collapse: out on errands,

MIAMI — They had just finished up lunch, and set off to run a humdrum errand: a drive to the travel agency to pick up airline tickets for their annual visit to their beloved homeland Cuba. Osvaldo Gonzalez and Alberto Arias, friends and business partners, happened to pass under a Miami bridge that Thursday afternoon, the road bustling with fellow drivers also out on the most ordinary and unthreatening of life’s errands. A teenager was driving her friend to the doctor’s office to pick up some medicine. A father of three was heading home from work. A woman on her way to

Fox News reports on an AP American History textbook that tells our kids what happened in the 2016 presidential election. From Hillary Clinton’s point of view, of course: "Tarra Snyder, a student at Rosemount High School in Minnesota, who saw a copy of the book sent to her school, told Fox News she was “appalled” after seeing how “blatantly biased” the newest edition of “By the People: A History of the United States” was toward Trump and his voters. She said it also glossed over all issues then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton faced during her campaign. *** The textbook – published by British-owned,

David Rose’s 1958 instrumental ‘The Stripper’ is the theme song for our times. Get ready for it to reverberate over and over again in your aching head between now and November. But there’s no escaping that this is one theme song owned by the progressive left. While dozens of Republicans send word that they won’t be seeking re-election, porn star Stormy Daniels is holding public attention by doing the Blue Wave Strip Tease. The instrumental and porn star make for a perfect combo for Dems in Exile out to flip the House and Senate in November Midterms. While Stormy bumps and grinds, professional

I was talking with an ex-university professor recently who told me that he was very happy to be retired. He said he was glad to be out of the hornets’ nest, away from a world so filled with political correctness that it was difficult to get through the day. Life on campus, he said, is rife with so many non-issue “issues” that it’s like walking barefoot on sidewalks littered with broken glass. He related how he once told a fellow professor that she “looked very nice today,” meaning that she had selected a particularly nice outfit. Rather than thank him for

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell killed a bill that sought to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller from being fired by President Donald Trump. Calling the bill unnecessary, McConnell said he would not bring any such bill to a vote. "That´s not necessary," McConnell previously argued. "There´s no indication that Mueller is going to be fired. I don´t think the president´s going to do that. Just as a practical matter, even if we passed it, why would he sign it?" As we all know, a bill that passes both the House and the Senate ends up on the president´s desk for

What the late Lionel Trilling used to call the liberal imagination was captured by the plight of two black men who went to a Philadelphia Starbucks and didn´t order anything. The company said 8,000 Starbucks stores would close for sensitivity training and the conscience of an anguished world pulsated with guilt and grief over the arrest of the two men, whose only offense was to stand there. The two men were exactly right: The right thing to do in Starbucks is not to order anything, because the coffee is disgusting. Starbucks´ response, to be sure, was incommensurate with the problem: Rather

The second week of April was the most critical week the legal marijuana industry has seen in the past five years, in the opinion of 420 Investor Alan Brochstein. Like many who not only advocate legalizing marijuana but also hope to profit from the sale of medicinal and recreational weed, Brochstein was celebrating news that two of the nation’s most powerful Republicans had changed their minds about marijuana that week. “This is likely to have a profound impact on the ability of both private and public companies to access capital. Tallahassee police suspected Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois possessed marijuana with the intent to sell it when they executed a search warrant on his home last week, according to an affidavit. The case — which culminated Thursday when Francois agreed to a pre-arrest diversion program on misdemeanor complaints of possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia — began in February. That´s when an anonymous tipster known to law enforcement reported seeing a grocery bag of marijuana at Francois´ home. Police estimated it was about two pounds of the drug – "in excess of what a common ´user´ of cannabis might have on hand

A high-speed police chase ended Tuesday with K9 units shifting through heavy swamp foliage to apprehend a Pasco County suspect who was submerged in mud after battering a Hernando County deputy and fleeing a traffic stop. The arrest of Paul Daniel Smith, 34, was caught on body-cam footage and shows the suspect completely submerged in water near Gardenia Drive and Wisteria Loop in Land O’Lakes. The police video shows Smith, of Holiday, asking officers to not "cuff him too tight" while a police dog named Knox sniffs at his face. In defiance, Smith said he’d like to be "tased" so he could

Perhaps I should have written the headline as "You´re" showering too much. I live alone, spending most of my days writing and blogging and I very rarely have to interact with other people. After my daughter went to college and I was back in my writer hermit mode, I began wondering if there was a point to a daily shower. Even at "quick guy shower" length one is wasting precious time that could be spent with Netflix, after all. Absent the need to make other people happy, was there any sound reasoning for wasting water like that? Not really. In fact, not

Former FBI Director James Comey may have, for the moment at least, become the most polarizing figure in America not named Donald Trump. The president´s detractors laud Comey as an honorable man who was wrongfully dismissed from his job and is using the freedom of private life to speak truth to power. As I pointed out last week when the first excerpts from Comey´s book were leaked, these are the same people who until recently blamed him for getting Trump elected. Trump´s supporters, on the other hand, just think Comey is a partisan hack whose public behavior is a bit off the deep

The problem with defining whether you’re an Alpha or a Beta male is that everybody wants to be an Alpha and we’re great at lying to ourselves. Either we fudge the answers or try to make being Alpha unobtainable (Alphas? That’s guys like Chuck Norris, James Mattis or The Rock) so we don’t feel bad about missing the mark. So, let’s make it a little more objective with this quiz. Answer as honestly as you can and this will let you know where you really stand. 1) Are you more of a leader or a follower? Former FBI Director James B. Comey said Wednesday that he no longer considers himself a Republican. “I just think they’ve lost their way, and I can’t be associated with it,” Mr. Comey said on ABC News podcast “Start Here.” Mr. Comey attributed the change in the party to the 2016 election and said that after he was fired, he started to become more politically aware. He has been a lifelong Republican and said that in today’s party, the only Republican he does respect is former 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney. He called Mr. Romney, who is running for the open Senate seat in Utah, a “person of principle and honor.”

SAN DIEGO - Fayaz Nawabi has never met President Donald Trump. But he credits the president with convincing him to run for office. Nawabi, a 31-year-old candidate for San Diego City Council, supports almost everything that Trump opposes: He is pro-affordable housing, pro-environment, pro-immigrant and pro-refugee. That makes him part of the blue wave of new liberal candidates spurred to run by Trump´s election and policies. But Nawabi is also part of a notable subset: the blue Muslim wave. More than 90 American Muslims, nearly all of them Democrats, are running for public office across the country this year. Many

A group of kids is suing Florida Gov. Rick Scott, claiming he “endangered” their future and violated their constitutional rights by not doing anything to combat climate change. The youngsters filed their lawsuit on Monday in Leon County Court. “It is the responsibility of the state to uphold the constitution, and these young people have a fundamental right to a stable climate system,” said Guy Burns, lead counsel for the eight plaintiffs, most of whom are teens. The youths are being represented by the Oregon-based nonprofit organization Our Children’s Trust, which is supporting similar suits from children across the country.
