Firm that built Miami´s ´insta-bridge´
is being sued for a walkway collapse at
Fort Lauderdale airport in 2016 while
their partner was fined $28k when a
90-ton section of a rail bridge fell

The two largest construction firms involved in building a newly-installed pedestrian bridge that collapsed, killing up to 10, have a history of serious safety breaches. Munilla Construction Management, a South Florida firm and Figg Bridge Group, a Tallahassee firm, partnered to build the Florida International University bridge in Miami. (Snip) A 90-ton portion of the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge assembled by Figg collapsed during construction in 2012. It dropped 40 feet to the ground onto railroad tracks below, according to the Virginian-Pilot. Four people were injured, and authorities called it pure luck no one was killed.

Comments:
One of their temporary bridges collapsed under the weight of government official, severely injuring him. That was 2 years ago, but rest assured, the government is on the case. Sound familiar?

As a contractor, I can attest that governments are as good with construction projects as they are with most things.
As a result they end up with builders who will do what they want without question and accept being paid handsomely for it.

Incompetent design, incompetent construction or crooked builder, cutting corners on materials.

Just about no other possibilities.

I lost two friends in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse, and that was pure incompetence by the field engineer managing the build. He made a seemingly minor change, which he should have been educated enough to know DOUBLED the load on key nuts holding up the sky walks. With a bit of knowledge, he could have added a $2 reinforcement plus a .25 cent hard washer in four places and it probably would have stand his incompetent change.

I will pay close attention to this disaster, too. I really hate incompetent engineers and crooked or incompetent construction firms.

#3, a very real possibility. If so, you can count on the fact that the media will cover it up as best they can.

When you choose contractors by "women or minority owned" basis, sometimes you do not get competence, you just get a female or black owner, who may or may not have the skills necessary.

Once the meritocracy is defeated by affirmative action, lives are in danger. AA artists and musicians just get you ugly "art" and crappy music. AA engineers and contractors get people killed.

Grant money, feasibility study, TIGER program, greasing the skids in all directions for University projects, like this particular project - that now is a fatal pile of rubble, the medical, the lawyers, the lawsuits, fines and fees AND a likely rebuild...all for an ill-conceived architectural wet dream so students can cross a street.

I was just scanning the FIGG Bridge Engineering site and was appalled to see them touting their ECOBRIDGE technology.

IMO, any time you add "eco" to something, you are going to get something that is more expensive and works poorly. I hope their "Ecobridge" BS is just marketing hype and didn´t result in unsafe changes in design methods or construction methods or materials.

"Eco" should scare you, it does me.

There may or may not have been illegals working on the bridge, but it is clear from just this article that modifications were made in the girder system that were never run by the bridge designers. Investigation will reveal many more corners cut, I imagine.

$14 million (or more) of our money went into the construction of this bridge in the form of a grant. According to other articles, FIU itself had a lot to do with the project. At least one other article says the companies that built it were chosen for political reasons, not because of the quality of their work.

#15, I started with a slide rule, moved to an electronic calculator in grad school, and finished my career with 2096 CPU Cray supercomputer. It was an exciting career, always pushing the limits of computer technology, always with the biggest models and they were literally scrapped in 2 or 3 years, obsoleted by much faster designs. We also had huge improvements in software over my career. Far more accurate and detailed analysis became possible.

A good engineer is pleased with technological advancements, and can use better tools to make better, safer designs.

But, when politics gets you selecting people to design or build critical structures based on issues other than pure technical competence, you will get people killed.

My guess is field construction engineers or construction managers (not engineers) are likely to have made changes that they were incompetent to understand would compromise the structure, for ´convenience´ or to save money. Just a guess, but that is what made the Hyatt Skywalks fall.

We will get answers eventually.

From "Father of Collapsed Florida Bridge was Obama "Champion of Change"201" article at Canada
Free Press today by Judy McLeod: "Celebrated leading visionary bridge engineer Atorod Azizinamini, whose ABC (Accelerated Bridge Construction) technology was used to build the bridge that collapsed yesterday on Florida International University’s campus, was named an Obama era Department of Transportation ‘Champion of Change’ in 2015.

The event in which Azizinaminif was awarded ‘Champion of Change’ status was webcast live at whitehouse.gov/live, no longer online.

Much will be made in coming days that FIGG Bridge Group designed the bridge and that it was constructed by MCM Construction, in the aftermath of the bridge’s collapse.

But it was Azizinamini bridge technology all the way"

Good points, #15 -- the Empire State Building was completed in 18 months; the Hoover Dam in just under 5 years.

This project was apparently 5 years in already, what with planning and financing, along with the usual political contortions needed to get anything done, and has been reported that it is ahead of a Spring 2019 completion date.

After all that time, they put up 950 tons of bridge in a single day and no one had any concerns about its unconventionality? What on earth made them decide to stress test it in the middle of the afternoon at its busy intersection? There´s a crosswalk about 50 feet away -- did the thing need to be built at all?

It´s a textbook example of cascading failure from design right down to construction and oversight. We´ve only just begun to see the results of the perverse incentives from the Obama era.

Britain´s biggest solar farms receive more cash from green subsidies than from selling the electricity they produce, figures reveal. Energy producers were encouraged to start solar farms with generous handouts funded by a ‘green levy’ on taxpayers’ bills. But many of them now make the majority of their cash from the subsidy – instead of the electricity they produce. The total subsidy provided to all generators of solar electricity last year is estimated to be about £1.2billion. This was part of the £5.6billion subsidy paid to green energy producers, which critics say inflates household energy bills. Figures from the Department for Business, Energy

Revere, Ma. — New England Confectionary Co., the candymaker behind classic treats like Necco Wafers, Sweethearts and Candy Buttons, will close operations in May if it does not find a buyer, the Wall Street Journal reports. Necco is the oldest continually operated candy maker in the U.S. Its origins date back to 1847 when Oliver Chase invented the first American candy machine: a lozenge cutter. Chase’s invention gave birth to the Wafer, which became the company’s signature candy. Public opinion on Necco Wafers is often divided. Some liken the taste to chalk or drywall while others consider them a nostalgic treat.
