Feds want to capture Florida
whooping cranes and move
them to Louisiana

Tampa Bay Times, by Barbara Behrendt & Craig Pittman

Original Article

If you haven’t ever seen a stately whooping crane in the wild in Florida, better hurry. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to transplant a bunch of them to Louisiana. The whoopers, as they’re sometimes called, live in a couple of different places in the state. The ones the federal agency is targeting live in the Kissimmee Prairie area of Central Florida, around Leesburg. They are part of a long-term experiment to spread the endangered birds into new habitat. The cranes, named for their bugling cry audible up to 2 miles away, once filled the skies from Florida to the Rockies.

Comments:
It´s good to see these magnificent birds recovering to 600 total. Many of us remember when their species numbered less than two dozen. The ultra rare California condor is similarly trying to claw its way back from extinction, and might even succeed if it just stops trying to fly through windmill farms aka "bat-chomping bird-slicing eco-crucifixes." [H/T James Delingpole]

We have bald eagles in the area, sometimes seen perching in a large pine tree nearby, or soaring overhead. There are at least 25 nesting pairs in our small but in most places heavily populated county.

Good intentions that I hope bear fruit.
If you have eagles you likely also have ospreys as it seems a great part of the former´s victuals are gained by robbing the latter.

A rather superficial article. What happened to "who, what, when, where and who"? It seems that every time something like this is written the cause for the problem is "over hunting and habitat destruction". I suspect that it is far more complicated than that. These birds have been protected for my entire life time. I am glad to know they are increasing their numbers but I also suspect we will be treated to another dose of federal single species management and to hell with everything else in the target area. Let the birds decide what habitat is appropriate.

Whoopers home in the Aransas National Wildlife refuge in the ‘70s numbered only a few. I remember going into the refuge where there were oil wells and seeing a sign on a well head “Ten thousand barrel a day whopper shut in for ten whoopers.

We pulled out all the stops to protect these magnificent birds.

Some species occupy incredibly narrow niches - if one little thing goes wrong they cannot adapt. We are going to lose most of those species . . . . often because they become the food of other species. The whooping cranes are doing pretty well in the Port Aransas area in Texas - there was worry they would be wiped out by a major hurricane - but they made it through the hurricanes in Texas last year. Whooping cranes like eagles have been strongly managed to see if they can make a come back. I hope they both make it.

Some day in the future a budding radical-minded historian will write a moving account of the horrendous forced migration imposed upon the indigenous cranes of Florida by relocating them to unfamiliar swamps in Louisiana.

It will make The Trail of Tears look like a walk in Central Park, and be hailed as the greatest environmental tome since Carson´s Silent Spring. Imagine the possibilities for a title.

Mr, too, #5, but it seems to me that the cranes might do that themselves, without intervention from federal do-gooders.

This kind of meddling only causes more problems. Has there ever been a program like this that has succeeded without untoward consequences?

The more I learn about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the happier I am that she is the new face of the Democratic Party. Ocasio-Cortez is an ignoramus on foreign policy, and is devoted to socialism, an ideology detested by all who would rather hug their pets than eat them. This news makes me even more glad that Ocasio-Cortez is officially Ms. Democratic Party: she is urging Democrats to shut down all American airports: (Snip) Yes, please! Please go straight to LaGuardia and shut it down. But don’t stop there! “Every airport” needs to be occupied and shut down by Democrats. Between now

So the formidable Marion Hammer, who sticks to her guns no matter how many children, churchgoers or everyday Americans die, finds herself the target of some nasty backlash. The powerful Florida lobbyist for the National Rifle Association is suing five men she says harassed, threatened and cyberstalked her with emails and other commuications that went beyond "mere criticism" of her pro-gun stances. Hammer — who says these days she can barely go to the grocery store without being called evil and worse — wants injunctions. Damages, too. You have to love that the tough-as-teflon Hammer, who’s made many a Florida lawmaker sweat bullets,

In the video clip below, a Euronews reporter tries to get a combative Steve Bannon to explain the phenomenon of populism. Bannon had been touring Europe as an observer and was in a way the natural person to ask. The resulting exchange is an entertaining, even enlightening exposition of Bannon´s interpretation of recent events -- but is his analysis correct? Is the reporter´s vague notion of populism as a regressive international conspiracy to revive the nation state or an atavistic return of the worst impulses of the 1930s spot on? Or is Steve Bannon correct in defining populism as largely a

What’s that? Unemployment is about to hit a record low. Yes, it is. Ever since President Donald J. Trump signed major tax reform legislation into law, the economy has been booming. Strong job growth, rising wages, and three million jobs created since Trump was sworn into office. There are now more jobs than there are job seekers. Over three million workers from over 250 companies have been given bonus checks averaging $1,000 or more. As so often happens, President Trump’s critics are so crazy that one feels compelled to take his side. Thus, former Communist and CIA Director John Brennan tweeted earlier today: (Snip, Brennan tweet) This is simply insane. Other Democrats, not going as far as Brennan, say that Trump “gave away the store,” or made inappropriate concessions to President Putin. But there is no evidence that Trump gave anything away in his meeting with Putin, or made any concessions. Putin certainly didn’t suggest that he did, for example with respect to Crimea, about which Democrats expressed concern in advance of the meeting:

The first goal is the one I think I’ll remember. It wasn’t the pretty one—that would be Paul Pogba’s, which came in the fifty-ninth minute, after a long pass from Pogba to Kylian Mbappé, the visionary precision of which made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. And it wasn’t the jaw-dropping one—that would be Mbappé’s own, a few minutes later, when he blasted the ball almost casually into the net from twenty-five yards out. No, the goal that most neatly symbolized France’s World Cup-winning 4–2 victory over Croatia, on Sunday—and, for that matter, Les Bleus’ brilliant,

Although Germany´s entire defense budget is $42 billion, it is as Donald Trump provocatively observed, only twice as much -- approximately $21 billion -- as it pays to Russia in gas purchases. The facts are stark. "About 35% of Germany’s gas is imported from Russia, and fracking is banned at least until 2021. A former Chancellor of Germany sits on the Gazprom board." At a time when Putin is the international bad guy it´s disturbingly hard to deny that much of his bankroll originates in Europe. Merkel is certainly intellectually aware of the facts. An interesting news story ran in Thursday’s USA Today. “Baltimore police stopped noticing crime after Freddie Gray´s death,” read the headline. “A wave of killings followed.” What I found most interesting about it, though, was not the facts that were reported but rather that anyone should have found them surprising. “Just before a wave of violence turned Baltimore into the nation’s deadliest big city,” the story begins, “a curious thing happened to its police force: officers suddenly seemed to stop noticing crime.” The story goes on to describe how Baltimore’s police officers reported seeing fewer drug dealers out and about, fewer traffic

In a recent interview, however, the upstart politico running in a hyper-liberal district in New York did not show command of the issues. Ocasio-Cortez was being interviewed by Margaret Hoover on the PBS show ‘Firing Line.’ Hoover asked very basic, softball questions of the young congressional candidate. In explaining her positions on the economy, Hoover asked Ocasio-Cortez “Do you think that capitalism has failed to deliver for working class Americans?” Hoover cited a currently booming US economy and low unemployment.
