First Church in Oberlin
discusses becoming sanctuary

OBERLIN — First Church in Oberlin invited church and community members to the first of four discussions this month about establishing the first sanctuary church in the county. The goal of the two-part sessions is to inform church members and discuss whether this is something they want. The session, led by church outreach committee members John Gates and Anne Elder, included a small introduction to the church’s storied history of protecting people within its walls since the abolitionist movement.

According to Pastor David T. Hill, First Church (United Church of Christ) is considering such action in response to a request made in November 2017 from a family seeking sanctuary from ICE. Local commenters point out that the city of Oberlin would not likely welcome Christopher Columbus because it abolished Columbus Day (favoring Indigenous Peoples Day). Commenters further allude to an Oberlin College’s staff member’s participation in conjunction with a student-affiliated altercation at Gibson’s Bakery and the resultant devastation of the Gibson family’s livelihood—a family business with an excellent reputation for 132 years, founded around 1885.

11th Commandment: thou shalt not virtue signal.

Slavery was legal in the south and illegal in the north. However, illegally entering Mexico is no different to illegally entering the US so the abolitionist argument is sophistry.

The problem at that family bakery was that some black Oberlin students were shoplifting, and the bakery owner called the police.
The college immediately took the side of the black shoplifter students, and the baker owner was accused of racism..
For the sake of the well being of that church, I hope they don´t provide sanctuary to criminals. If they do, they will be robbed blind.
And if they call the police...

"I’m excited Oberlin is living up to its heritage as a community that welcomes a stranger,” she said.

Fine, then give them a nice hot meal to eat and a place to rest, then go call ICE.

What part of the Koran are they using for justification?
Jesus made perfect example by using a whip on and destroying the property of trespassers in the Church.
Now, they could replicate the slave days.
Provide sanctuary and an underground railroad that safely brought them back to their home countries so they could avoid ICE during the trip back home.

Melania Trump took a bit of a tumble on Monday, with the First Lady losing her balance as she prepared to board Marine One on the White House lawn. She was able to avoid a catastrophic face plant however thanks to the helping hand of one special man, her husband, President Donald Trump. He already had his arm around Melania when she tripped, and afterwards the couple were both seen holding one another as they boarded the helicopter. It was one of the rare times the two have displayed public affection over the past few months.

However, not all writers in the genre look to the future for their ideas -- plenty are obsessed with moving backwards, from liberty back to tyranny. Robinson recently penned an op-ed in The Guardian that favors removing humans from most of the world, forcefully herding us all into cities. "The tendency of people to move to cities, either out of desire or perceived necessity, creates a great opportunity. Discussing cities is like talking about the knots in a net: they’re crucial, but they’re only one part of the larger story of the net and what it’s supposed to do. It makes little sense to talk about knots in isolation when it’s the net that matters. Cities are part of the system we’ve invented to keep people alive on Earth. People tend to like cities, and have been congregating in them ever since the invention of agriculture, 10,000 or so years ago. That’s why we call it civilisation. This origin story underlines how agriculture made cities possible, by providing
