Legislature approves year-round daylight
saving time — but it’s not a done deal yet

Tallahassee – After hours of divisive debate over guns, schools and freedom, the Florida Senate spent less than a minute Tuesday and voted on something they all could agree on: daylight. The Senate voted 33-2 to send a bill to Gov. Rick Scott to ask the U.S. Congress to decide whether Florida should be a state that enjoys daylight saving time year-round. It was passed by the House on Feb. 14, 103-11. Under the plan, HB 1013, called the “Sunshine Protection Act,” the state would ask Congress to pass a law to let the Sunshine State move from standard time to daylight saving

If enough states do this, maybe we can all end the folly of clock roulette.

One thing that does tick me off a bit is the sun effectively being up until almost 8:30 - 90 at night and not getting dark until an hour later. That ain´t right. Doesn´t do my air conditioning bills any favors, either.

In November 1883, U.S. and Canadian railroads, to avoid confusion from 100-plus conflicting local time terminals, adopted four time zones to govern their operations. “Federal oversight of time zones began in 1918 with the enactment of the Standard Time Act.” It may be time to resolve the EST/DST controversy with a national program to establish consistency throughout the States to end the haphazard state variations and unnecessary stress DST places on personal health. Heart attacks increase 24 percent on Mondays following spring’s daylight savings time. Research has shown DST is more burden than boom; for example, energy usage increases.

Crazy! We need fewer not more local variations in time. If the Federal government could be good for anything (aside possibly for wars), this is it.

If people or businesses want different hours, adopt summer hours on the local basis. Problem solved.

The Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn has canceled a controversial NRA fundraiser after criticism of the event from local leaders and neighbors, a report said Monday. The famed Park Slope catering establishment — known for its decades-old tag line, “We’ll make your dreams come true” — had agreed to host the “Second-Annual Brooklyn Friends of the NRA” fundraiser after the group had been turned away from a spot at Coney Island. “My good friends, the schools in the area, and other people, the Park Slopians, want me to do the right thing by them. Albany — Actress Cynthia Nixon on Monday made it official — she is challenging Gov. James Kallstrom is no joke. With nearly thirty years in the FBI, several of them as the Assistant Director, Kallstrom knows how the agency functions far more than most.
