EVERYBODY thinks he’s a good person. The bully at your kid’s school would tell you, “I was trying to help him toughen up"; the Nazi death camp guard would say, “We were making a better world"; Michael Bay would tell you, “The Transformers movies should have won Oscars! They were the most underrated film series in movie history!” So what about you? How do you know if you’re a good person? Easy… you take this quiz. As you do, you’ll notice I’ve steered away from political questions since there are good people of every political persuasion. I’ve also avoided religious questions not just

I know in the past these were no brainers. People were taught morals, values and ethics. Not just in the home, but school, church, the culture. This article seems really dumb to me. Maybe it´s not so much dumb, but a road marker on the path to our loss of morals, values and ethics.

One thing I´ve found out over the years is that the further we as a society move away from God the more intensely we embrace a contrived and artificial notion of goodness.

(Case in point: Oprah Winfrey for president)

18) Do you find oppression in everything, do you find everything (except socialism) offensive, are you doing what you can to send Trump supporters to the gulags or to their deaths?

How can anyone possibly be a good person without that one?

Federal court rules consumer
bureau structure unconstitutional

A federal district judge ruled Thursday that the structure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) violates the Constitution, countering a January ruling from a federal appeals court. Judge Loretta Preska of the Southern District of New York ruled that the CFPB’s creation as an independent agency with a director that could only be dismissed for wrongdoing was unconstitutional. In January, the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the CFPB’s structure was constitutional, reversing a 2016 verdict issued by a panel of the court’s judges. The appeals court’s initial opinion, written by Judge Brett Kavanaugh, sought to

WASHINGTON -- UN Ambassador Nikki Haley told Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) that a UN report declaring that "contempt for the poor" is growing in America along with wealth inequality was “politically motivated” and “misleading.” After the initial report from United Nations´ special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights Philip Alston was issued earlier this month, Sanders and 19 other Democrats sent a letter to Haley urging that the administration take heed of the report and present an action plan to combat poverty. "We believe the massive levels of deprivation outlined in the report – as well as the immense suffering this

Iraq set for election recount amid fraud claims

BAGHDAD — Iraq´s Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a disputed law ordering a hand recount of the ballots from last month´s national elections after widespread allegations of fraud embarrassed political leaders and marred the initial result. What was supposed to mark the start of a new era for Iraq has turned into a political crisis as the charges of vote tampering grew too loud for Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi´s government to ignore. The May 12 election was the first since Iraq declared victory over the Islamic State group, which was in control of one-third of Iraqi territory just three years ago. But

The US Supreme Court has ruled in favor of digital privacy. In a 5-4 decision on Friday the justices decided that police need warrants to gather phone location data as evidence for trials. The Supreme Court reversed and remanded the Sixth Circuit court´s decision. Carpenter v. United States is the first case about phone location data that the Supreme Court has ruled on. That makes it a landmark decision regarding how law enforcement agencies can use technology as they build cases. The court heard arguments in the case on Nov. 29. The dispute dates back to a 2011 robbery in Detroit, after which police

In The Consolation of Philosophy, the 5th Century Greek scholar and Roman Consul Boethius wrote: “Compare the length of a moment with the period of ten thousand years; the first, however miniscule, does exist as a fraction of a second. But that number of years, or any multiple of it that you may name, cannot even be compared with a limitless extent of time, the reason being that comparisons can be drawn between finite things, but not between finite and infinite.” Boethius’ insight into the nature of asymmetrical comparison is perennially valid, whether with respect to philosophical and theological speculation, mathematical

A Land O’ Lakes teen is recovering after being infected by something you may not expect: a caterpillar. A day of doing volunteer yard work on June 16 turned ugly when Logan Pergola’s arm brushed by an oak tree. “It just hurt like a small scratch," Logan told us. "Then all of the sudden, my arm went numb and I felt a burning pain." He looked down and saw a unlikely culprit: a small, furry caterpillar, later identified as a southern flannel moth. It’s also commonly called a puss caterpillar. His arm had simply brushed it when the venom went into

Tania Lavin is (or was, at last word) a fact-checker for the New Yorker. She achieved overnight Twitter-fame by accusing an ICE agent of being a white supremacist. The New York Post has the story: "A Harvard-educated fact-checker for the New Yorker is being excoriated by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency for “baselessly slandering” a Marine veteran — by falsely accusing him of having a Nazi tattoo, according to reports. In fact, he´s saying the majority of Americans are too intellectually challenged to discriminate between fact and fiction. It has been said a nation can have either welfare or open borders -- but not both -- in the same way one can have a cool air-conditioned room in a blazing desert or an open door -- but not both. It is the inequality between the outside and inside temperatures that the door is intended to preserve. The problem of keeping the room cool while leaving the door open is now consuming Angela Merekel´s European Union as the refugee problem grows in political size. Can the EU have no internal borders if it lacks an external one? If there´s no

TAMPA — Loueita Hargens had known for years how her son Bradley Dykes would die. She had seen him cycle through drugs of choice, had lost track of the number of times he’d wound up in the hospital or prison. A recovering alcoholic herself, she cut him off several years ago. "If you want to talk, you can find me at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting," the mother told her son. It finally happened in November: Dykes fatally overdosed on the synthetic opioid fentanyl. He was 46. Hargens was grief stricken but not shocked, and months later, another emotion has joined the mix. She hopes the federal prosecution of her

Wa Tiba was concerned about wild boars getting into her corn, planted about a half-mile from her house. When she hadn’t returned by sunrise Friday, her sister went to look for her. Taxes: Whatever you think about the issue of taxing internet sales, the simple fact is that the Supreme Court has just guaranteed that people across the country will now be paying more in state taxes. It´s hard for us to see how this is good news. In its 5-4 decision on South Dakota v. Wayfair, the court overturned two previous rulings that prevented states from taxing sales of out-of-state companies. That meant a catalog company based in Maine didn´t have to navigate 45 state sales-tax laws to figure out how much each customer owed, and then remit that money to the

How´s this for sneaky? Sen. John McCain, not too long after seeking conservative and Republican votes in his failed 2008 bid for the presidency, went right after those same conservative voters without telling them, by egging on the IRS to ruin them. It´s the sort of political back-stabbing that defies belief, taking an active role in destroying the Tea Party, which was an authentic grassroots movement of local groups calling for smaller government.
