A convicted money launderer employed by Democratic Rep. Alcee Hastings (Fla.) in one of his Florida district offices received a pay increase for "part-time" work last year, new salary data filings show. Additionally, Hastings´s longtime girlfriend Patricia Williams appears to have received a promotion, though she did not get a raise since she is already receiving the maximum salary that is allowed to be paid to congressional staffers. Dona Nichols Jones, who has been listed as working in Hastings´s Palm Beach County Office for the past four years, was paid nearly $40,000 last year for "part-time" work. Nichols Jones was

Nice work if you can get it, and if you can get it you are probably a South Florida Democrat. The Panhandle needs to secede from the rest of this mess.

Perhaps Sessions could file RICO charges against the Congressional Black Caucus and it´s members? No, that would be called racist despite overwhelming evidence.

That they can continue to keep someone like Hastings in office means the citizens of Broward County have serious people sense and common sense issues. I´m unfamiliar with Florida politics, but this and Sheriff Israel and Runcie (both of whom apparently still have their jobs) is shocking.

The phrase “sanctuary cities” is warm and welcoming. Sanctuaries are safe, cozy, and sometimes therapeutic. This term is also a deceptive euphemism for something thoroughly unacceptable. Conservatives redefined the debate on the “estate tax” when 60 Plus Association founder Jim Martin rechristened it the “Death Tax.” Likewise, those who seek law, order, and sanity in immigration should refer to “sanctuary cities” as “fugitive cities.” Anyone who hides a wanted criminal from federal officials could be prosecuted for harboring a fugitive. According to 18 U.S. Code § 1071, it is “an offense to harbor or conceal any person for whose arrest a warrant

The so-called “Trump dossier” continues to be the most important—and contested—document in the many probes of Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election. Since its publication by BuzzFeed on January 10, 2017—bearing the remarkable disclaimer that “the allegations are unverified, and the report contains errors”—it has set partisan hearts racing. Democrats have by and large treated it as a collection of solid leads in need of thorough investigation by intelligence and law-enforcement agencies. Senator Dianne Feinstein is typical in claiming that “not a single revelation in the Steele dossier has been refuted.” Republicans, by contrast, see it as a partisan

Well, that’s it. It was a good run, but the machines are taking over the earth. Sorry. Amazon’s voice-activated “personal assistant” Alexa has been unexpectedly laughing for no apparent reason. For the past few weeks, Alexa users have been reporting “creepy” laughter emanating from their devices without provocation. (The idea that an electronic device would even have a laugh is frightening in and of itself.) There is, of course, only one explanation: Alexa is alive, and she’s coming for you. BuzzFeed reports that one Reddit user tried to get Alexa to turn off the lights (something she can already do, apparently)

This is an anniversary story, but not the usual kind. It’s an anniversary nearly 30 years too young and one that, because of a mixture of a sense of duty, a devotion to country and stubborn paranoia, cost a man much of his life. It was on this day, 44 years ago, that a Japanese soldier still fighting what he thought was the Second World War formally surrendered, coming out of hiding in a Philippine jungle more than 29 years after the war ended. “The sun began to sink. I inspected my rifle and retied my boots … I jumped over a

The national media are scaling back their prediction for a Democratic "blue wave" in the 2018 midterms, in light of a new poll that shows some Democrats are vulnerable and a healthy GOP turnout in Texas this week. Fueled in part by Republican-backed tax cuts that increased the paychecks for most people, Republicans and President Trump have seen their own poll numbers rise, and what was previously viewed as a coming reckoning by Democrats has stalled. The website Axios on Thursday published a poll that showed “big warning signs for Senate Democrats.” It noted that in 10 states where Democrats are

The world needs to do more to prepare for the next huge volcanic eruption, a team of leading scientists says. The devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 and the Tohoku earthquake in Japan in 2011 highlighted some of the worst-case scenarios for natural disasters. But humanity has not had to deal with a cataclysmic volcanic disaster since at least 1815, when the eruption of Tambora in Indonesia killed tens of thousands of people and led to a ‘year without a summer’ in Europe and North America. Such world-altering blasts rank at 7 or more on the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) scale

A person can pretend to be a member of the opposite sex, Dr. Anderson notes, but it will never be more than play-acting since one’s biological sex is a physical reality outside the individual’s control. “Modern science shows that our sexual organization begins with our DNA and development in the womb, and that sex differences manifest themselves in many bodily systems and organs, all the way

Dr. Emanuel is best known as an advocate of health care rationing and a key architect of the “Affordable Care Act.” In other words, he believes the malady troubling American medicine is that we provide too much of it. The treatment he prescribed — Obamacare — was a disaster and he consistently overstates the efficacy of that

Maine also passed bills to ditch daylight saving time. Arizona and Hawaii don´t abide by daylight saving time. The problem Florida faces is that while the law lets states opt out of
