Monarch Mayhem: 91% of butterflies
vanish, just 93 million of 1 billion left

Washington Examiner, by Paul Bedard

The fluttering Monarch butterfly is in a tailspin to disaster. New wintering numbers released by Mexico and quoted by several groups on Monday accounted for an estimated 93 million, 91 percent fewer than in the 1990s. Where once the butterflies would turn 45 acres of Mexican forests orange and black, they covered just six acres this winter, prompting groups to call on the administration to declare the delicate bug endangered. (Snip) At issue, they say, is global warming and engineered seeds that include pesticides. “Another year, another reminder: Our government must do what the law and science demands, and protect monarchs

This is so very, very sad to see. That is a shocking drop in numbers. I don´t know what is to blame, but I do know that the fraud that is global warming is not.. I haven´t seen a Monarch butterfly for years. When my sister and I were kids there was a field near our house and we spent all day playing there and chasing all different kinds of butterflies. What wonderful memories. I also haven´t seen the beautiful Swallowtails for years.

Yep, they were absolutely everywhere when I was a kid growing up in Illinois. You could go into a field and be engulfed by them. I´ve often wondered where all the butterflies have gone.

Do these lame brains know for a fact that this very thing did not happen, say, 500 years ago. Maybe this is a cycle. Maybe the monarch population was growing too big to be sustained by its habitat. Maybe 91 million is the normal population of monarchs and 1 billion is the anomaly. Who are these monarch butterfly experts and how are they credentialed? They sure know that its "climate change" that´s causing this, but not sure how. If you´re not sure how then how can you blame it on "climate change"? Ignore these ignorant know nothings.

The article explains the cause. Removal of milkweed, on which they feed. Seeds treated chemically. And then there is old global warming. Hauled out yet again.

The announcement of this at this time is probably part of the anti-Wall propaganda that is being whipped up. We have recently heard that some butterflies will not be able to fly over the wall.

I agree with the poster who questioned who counts these butterflies.

Here is an article that talks about the count being down East of the Rockies and mentions the milkweed problem. The monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed and the larva feed on it.

The implication in this article is that the problems facing the monarchs are north of the border (I dismiss global warming) and nothing south of the border could in anyway be a problem.

Which means Global Warming would be good for them, not bad, as the ignorati in this WE article claim. Unless they don´t understand that GW means temps are warmer, not colder.

From the article linked in #9:

Only monarchs born in late summer or early fall make the migration, and they make only one round trip. By the time next year´s winter migration begins, several summer generations will have lived and died and it will be last year´s migrators´ great grandchildren that make the trip. Yet somehow these new generations know the way, and follow the same routes their ancestors took—sometimes even returning to the same tree.

Many scientists are concerned about the eastern population of monarchs, which summer east of the Rocky Mountains. This group is occurring in ever smaller numbers, and its survival may be threatened by a series of natural disasters in the Mexican wintering grounds, as well as by reduced acreage of milkweed plants in their summer home.

Actually, this one is real, and really a pretty simple cause, too many farmers plowing right to the edge of their fields, eliminating the wild margins which used to hold a lot of milkweed. When I wa s a kid, every area had a few vacant lots, and often filled with milkweed. Now cities and hHOAs are death on vacant lots, mowing down all the weeds, including milkweed.

Without milkweed, no Monarchs. Plant some milkweed if you want to be part of the solution.

You here that know me, know I am no kind of sucker for the leftist, whacko eco-freako lies like the loss of polar bears, which is provable counterfactual.

This is real and if a bunch of us plant milkweed, we might be able to turn this around, just because they are beautiful and wonderous.

So start putting free heirloom milkweed seeds in cereal boxes. Okay - not REALLY, but you get what I mean. Stress the importance of milkweed, encourage people to plant them in their gardens. For the butterflies. Get states to plant them in natural and roadside areas. No - we don´t need "study", a task force, a department created. A little public info and access to seeds. We´ll respond.

Here in the western ´burbs of Houston on my small lot I get all kinds of butterflies. The only one that seems rarer than used-to-be is the Swallowtail.
