Trump’s tariff war nudges Cohn
toward White House exit

Politico, by Ben White and Andrew Restuccia

Original Article

Gary Cohn, President Donald Trump’s top economic adviser, has been rumored to be on the brink of leaving the White House for months but stayed for one main reason: to stop the president from imposing steep tariffs. By Thursday afternoon, Cohn had lost the fight. In a meeting with steel industry executives, Trump announced plans for a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum imports. The decision came after a frantic 24 hours in which Cohn and others tried to talk Trump off the ledge. At one point, aides were sure Trump would make the announcement. Then they said he wouldn’t.

Isn’t it fun to muck around in this? Meanwhile the President watches. Observes.

What´s clear is Trump doesn´t just have a bunch of "YES-MEN" in his Cabinet.

Unlike the previous administration who marched in line, to the same tune, and followed orders to the "T".

So, protecting US steel and aluminum production is verboten? Only if you want ot Make America Weak Again

Sorry, these are critical, strategic materials and we MUST have robust, capable producers inside our country.

We absolutely CANNOT be in a position that China can cut us off from the ability to manufacture things with steel or aluminum, especially weapons systems. This is a strategic capability and we cannot be so stupid as to let China collapse our infrastructure to make them by shipping us cheap, subsidized steel and aluminum, until our own industry dies, and then they have us by the short hairs.

If the cost of having this critical, strategic manufacturing capability is a few dollars more on products, then it is a very small price to pay to avoid being taking under control of China when we have no capability to make them, and the Dragon decides to suddenly raise prices, or cut off supplies.

One night in the spring of 2007, when I was thirteen, my little brother and I cupped our hands to our upstairs hallway window, looked through the cigar smoke in our backyard, and tried to find Steve Miller. There was a grown-up party swirling around outside, but we couldn’t figure out which adult was the celebrity guest. We’d learned every Steve Miller Band classic rock hit from 93.3 The Bone, but we had no idea what the guy looked like. The albums we owned either had a painting of Pegasus or a man in a Joker mask on the cover,

Insubordination and Bias at FBI

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s 500-page report covers plenty, but it can be distilled to two words he uses to describe the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the 2016 election: insubordination and bias. Two terms that are chilling in connection with such a powerful agency. That won’t be the message from Democrats and most of the press, who will focus on a few episodes they will claim cost Hillary Clinton an election. Watch for them to blame former FBI Director James Comey, whom the report faults for “a serious error of judgment,” for having “concealed information” from superiors, and for “violation of or

More than any federal agency or department I’ve worked for, with, or against, the Justice Department resembles a cult. Its employees think they are special. They feel intense hostility towards the Department’s adversaries. They are fiercely loyal to the Department and compulsively committed to its ways of doing things. Outsiders are viewed with condescension and suspicion, if not contempt. Obviously, many DOJ employees do not buy fully into the cult, but many do. Those who rise to the top tend to embrace it the most. This brings us to Rod Rosenstein, a career DOJ attorney who joined the department in 1990.

Donald Trump has proved in 18 months that he can disrupt the global status quo, for better (Iran) and worse (trade). The question as he brawls with his G-7 allies after their annual summit and now meets with adversary Kim Jong Un is whether the President knows that disruption isn’t enough. Sooner or later he has to contribute to a better world order instead of merely blowing up the old one. Unlike most of the U.S.-Europe foreign-policy elite, we think the world needed some shaking up. According to its name, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) exists to protect consumers. But according to the vision of its progenitor, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, the CFPB is a government-sanctioned bludgeon to be wielded against businesses and industries at the whim of its director — whom she intended, like a latter-day Louis XIV, to be herself. In Richard Cordray, the inaugural helmsman she handpicked after being slapped down (in relation to the latter ambition), Ms. Warren had a partner just as dedicated as she to punishing profitability under the guise of consumer advocacy. Late in 2017 Mr. Cordray departed the CFPB

The New York Times published a long letter from Trump’s team to Mueller arguing that he should drop his request to interview the president. The lengthy letter makes many factual and legal assertions, some of which are highly debatable. Yet, assuming that it accurately reflects the nature and scope of Mueller’s investigation, its two bottom-line claims have merit: The special counsel does not have a viable criminal case against the president, nor has he justified the extraordinary measure of seeking the president’s
