The Pronunciation of Bowie Knife,
Jim Bowie, and David Bowie

Texas Monthly Magazine, by John Nova Lomax

Original Article

How do you, as a Texan, say the name Bowie? Does it rhyme with Louie, or snowy? Or do you say it differently depending on if you are talking about the Alamo hero, or the British rock star? According to a dialect survey from Joshua Katz’s North Carolina State University, Texans are among the only Americans to still rhyme Bowie with gooey, though the portion of us who do appears to be shrinking as Ziggy Stardust’s fame eclipses that of Texas’s own James. With Alamo season upon us, let’s take a look back at Jim Bowie, the knife he made famous, and

Just for fun, since it´s Texas Independence Day. It´s pronounced "BOO-ey".

Just for fun do a utube search of Bowie (insert your pronunciation here) knives and forging of same. You´ll find about 30 or more different styles all claiming to be the "REAL" type.
Question: does it make a big difference if you´re stuck with one or a copy?

Aks Virginians - those that are ROVAs - how they pronounce ´house´...similar to Sam Houston being born near Lexington VA....or the common moniker GTT - still valid today - Gone to Texas...some just figure it out sooner, others it takes a few generations...

I think the distinguishing characteristics of a Bowie knife are the "hand guard" (probably more useful to keep it from sitting too low in the scabbard and poking through the bottom, or just letting it hang from a loop) and the last few inches have a sharpened top which is slightly recurved so the tip is sharper. Whether the saw and fish scaling tops are legitimate variations is a religious argument like beans in chili.

And since David renamed himself (née Jones) after the knife, maybe in the far future, everybody will say it correctly ;-)

W.C. Fields used the "snowy" pronunciation in the movie "Mississippi," describing his prowess as an Indian fighter.

"Unsheathing my Bowie knife, I hacked my way through a wall of human flesh."

That´s always been good enough for me. And Davy Crockett looked exactly like John Wayne.

According to the theme song of the Jim Bowie TV series I watched as a young boy in the 50´s, the pronunciation rhymes with gooey. It´s easy to find clips of the theme online now, along with the impressive knife throw that starts off the show.

I agree with OP´s comment.

And in the few years I was a custom knifemaker, I never heard it pronounced otherwise.

I guess though we could argue on the proper pronunciation of Jim´s brother Rezin´s first name though.

I think the on-going loss of regional dialects and local pronunciations (Go Iggles) in America is a darn shame.

That said, I believe the town in Maryland is still pronounced Boo-ey.

The article fails to mention that David Bowie was forced to adopt his stage name because at the tie he was starting out, there was already another David Jones tearing up the charts. That would be, of course, Davy Jones of the Monkees, someone you would never associate with a Bowie Knife.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation may face a serious legal obstacle: It is tainted by antecedent political bias. The June 14 report from Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department’s inspector general, unearthed a pattern of anti-Trump bias by high-ranking officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Some of their communications, the report says, were “not only indicative of a biased state of mind but imply a willingness to take action to impact a presidential candidate’s electoral prospects.” Although Mr. Horowitz could not definitively ascertain whether this bias “directly affected” specific FBI actions in the Hillary Clinton email investigation, it nonetheless affects

Three days before she secured the Democratic nomination for governor on May 22, Guadalupe “Lupe” Valdez greeted a small crowd at the Blue Star Brewing Company, an upscale pub on the banks of the San Antonio River. A few months had passed since Valdez had traded in the blue uniform of Dallas County sheriff for business-casual campaign attire. Valdez glowed with pride as she worked the room. Almost everyone towered over her, but the mostly Hispanic audience appeared deferential. Valdez told her audience, including former San Antonio mayor Julián Castro, that she grew up just west of downtown, in one

When you call someone the greatest at anything, you risk being accused of foolishness or worse; but it´s safe to say that Charles Krauthammer, who passed away Thursday, was the greatest political commentator of our time. I write this not just because he won the Pulitzer for commentary as a conservative, a near Herculean task. And I say this even though I sometimes disagreed with him, especially lately. Whom do we not disagree with at one time or another -- even ourselves? I write this because Krauthammer was the gold standard of columnists, the most incisive mind in political journalism augmented by

Federal authorities will no longer file criminal charges against migrant parents who cross into the United States illegally, a senior U.S. Customs and Border Protection official told The Washington Post on Thursday. The about-face comes just one day after President Trump signed an executive order ending his administration’s widely denounced practice of separating parents and children apprehended for illegally crossing the Mexico border. Trump’s order said the government would maintain a “zero tolerance” policy toward those who break the law, but the senior U.S. official, asked to explain how the government would

There emerges a common denominator: the surety by all involved that Hillary Clinton would be president, and the need to prepare for that fact. WASHINGTON - Decrying “internment camps,” Democrats and their supporters disrupted a high-profile U.S. congressional hearing on Tuesday with a dramatic protest against the Trump administration’s policy of detaining immigrant children separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. With the sound of a young child crying in the background, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler, broke from traditional protocol and started reading from a statement, saying “these children are not animals.” His Republican colleagues tried to shout over him “Out of order!”

One night in the spring of 2007, when I was thirteen, my little brother and I cupped our hands to our upstairs hallway window, looked through the cigar smoke in our backyard, and tried to find Steve Miller. We’d learned every Steve Miller Band classic rock hit from 93.3 The Bone, but we had no idea what the guy looked like. The albums we owned either had a painting of Pegasus or a man in a Joker mask on the cover,

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s 500-page report covers plenty, but it can be distilled to two words he uses to describe the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the 2016 election: insubordination and bias. Two terms that are chilling in connection with such a powerful agency. That won’t be the message from Democrats and most of the press, who will focus on a few episodes they will claim cost Hillary Clinton an election. Watch for them to blame former FBI Director James Comey, whom the report faults for “a serious error of judgment,” for having “concealed information” from superiors, and for “violation of or

More than any federal agency or department I’ve worked for, with, or against, the Justice Department resembles a cult. Its employees think they are special. They feel intense hostility towards the Department’s adversaries. They are fiercely loyal to the Department and compulsively committed to its ways of doing things. Outsiders are viewed with condescension and suspicion, if not contempt. Obviously, many DOJ employees do not buy fully into the cult, but many do. Those who rise to the top tend to embrace it the most. This brings us to Rod Rosenstein, a career DOJ attorney who joined the department in 1990.

The question as he brawls with his G-7 allies after their annual summit and now meets with adversary Kim Jong Un is whether the President knows that disruption isn’t enough. Sooner or later he has to contribute to a better world order instead of merely blowing up the old one. Unlike most of the U.S.-Europe foreign-policy elite, we think the world needed some shaking up. Taxes: Whatever you think about the issue of taxing internet sales, the simple fact is that the Supreme Court has just guaranteed that people across the country will now be paying more in state taxes. It´s hard for us to see how this is good news. In its 5-4 decision on South Dakota v. That meant a catalog company based in Maine didn´t have to navigate 45 state sales-tax laws to figure out how much each customer owed, and then remit that money to the

How´s this for sneaky? Sen.
