Fired cooks at NYU demonstrate the
impossibility of culinary commemoration
of Black History Month

Two people who work to prepare food for students at New York University have lost their jobs for serving a meal featuring food and beverages believed to be stereotypically associated with black cuisine. The New York Times reports: On Tuesday, a dining hall at New York University advertised a special meal in honor of Black History Month. On the menu? Barbecue ribs, corn bread, collard greens, and two beverages with racist connotations: Kool-Aid and watermelon-flavored water. Nia Harris, a sophomore in N.Y.U.´s College of Arts & Science, sought an explanation from Weinstein Passport Dining Hall´s head cook.

I’m so fed up with this bull. And what would the students suggest? These people are going to,complain no matter what was cooked or served. And two people lost their jobs over this? Sickening and disgusting and very very tiresome.

Google "Soul Food" and see what pops up.

Will the fired cooks ever be allowed to work again?

Those fired for reasons of "insensitivity" must atone for those "sins," in exile, for eternity .

This sanctimonious little victim obviously feels no regret that two individuals lost their jobs over this non-issue. If I were an HR person and discovered this event while searching Ms. Harris´ online history, I would avoid her like the plague. Can you imagine the discontent and discord such a person could engender in a company? And btw, should all soul food restaurants (almost exclusively owned and run by Black Americans) be closed down as a result of the sentiments expressed by Ms. Harris? I guess she wouldn´t care about the many thousands of (mostly Black) people who would lose their jobs and source of income. Also, how many people will read about the incident at NYU and stay away from soul food restaurants, thinking they are an insult to Black Americans? Good going Ms. Harris.

Haha! Great one.

Another reason they should all close up is because ´´Soul Food´´ is nothing more than Southern cooking. Where did they learn to make Soul Food? From their plantation masters! They don´t, and never have, cooked like that in Africa! Surely these super-sensitive race mongers don´t want to eat any food with a Southern heritage!

You people are mkissing the point of her complaint.
Part of ´getting over on the man´, an honored tradition in the black culture, is to find something to complain about from a racial perspective. Almost anything will do. (Back in the 1970s, when afro hairdos were popular, complaints were lodged against barbers who tried to explain that they lacked the skills necessary to do that ´do.´
Threats from state licensing agencies to withdraw barbers licenses took place.)
PBS did a show on black colleges of the 1960s and 1970s, where student protests put some black colleges out of business.
What were the protests about? The students wanted control over the curriculum, they wanted no non black professors/administrators, and they didn´t want rules about personal behavior.
A number of black schools disappeared because of such lunacy.

Obviously the folks at NYU are not qualified to run an eatery.
The cafeteria should be shut down and the students instructed to bring their own lunch.
This would create pandemonium as there is likely close to a majority of the students who lack the knowledge required to assemble a lunch for themselves or the discipline required.
This would bring the fact that they are producing dysfunctional people into sharp focus.

Looking for scapegoats. The company claims that the black cooks were consulted about what should be on the menu. However, someone above them had to have approved the menu. That person should have been more aware of political considerations.

But were the two who lost their jobs actually the black cooks? I´m not sure that has been confirmed.

Bottom line: There was nothing the food service company could have done to cover itself except get the menu approved by someone in the university hierarchy.

(Remember that the school service company is separate from the university.--Food service is outsourced to a separate commercial entity.)

BBQ Ribs, collards, and cornbread are common foods here. I have never heard of Kool-Aid and ´watermelon-flavored water´ as being ´soul food´/black cuisine, or really anything of note.
To me, the problem is immediately apparent; They FORGOT the FRIED CHICKEN!
And no, I am NOT being a smart-ass.
I live in south Mississippi. We have a lot of black folks here. I had the privilege of attending the funeral of the father of one of my black co-workers. At the church after the service, the ladies put on a HUGE meal for everyone, and what I remember is the fried chicken. And Boy, was it some kind of GOOD!
