Jeff Flake to introduce bill to raise
minimum age to purchase assault
rifle to 21 years old

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., is working with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., on a new bill that raises the minimum age to buy assault rifles such as an AR-15 to 21 years old, he said Wednesday. “A kid too young buy a handgun should be too young to buy an #AR15. Working with @SenFeinstein on a bipartisan bill that will raise the minimum purchase age for non-military buyers from 18 to 21 - the same age you currently have to be to purchase a handgun,” Flake tweeted. (Tweet) Under federal law, the minimum age to buy a handgun is 21, and the

I challenge him to define what he wants to control.

Removing the military styling does nothing to change the fact that a semi-automatic rifle can be fired rapidly, even with a wooden stock, no bayonet lug, no flash hider.

Do the "Indy Pace Car" paint, logos, wings, hood scoops and wide tires make a car into a real racing car? No. They are just styling. Same for "semi-auto assault rifles" - they are not assault rifles, just ordinary rifles with military styling features.

This Flake is stupid.

This is great news! I can now buy an "assault" rifle. I always wanted my own, personal M-16.

I think Jeff Flake meant to say he wanted to raise the age to purchase scary-looking guns.

Mitch and Ryan put him up to it. Romney will step up and endorse it and MCCain and Graham will Co sponsor it. However it will not pass because Democrats don’t want it to pass. They want it to be a campaign issue. No talk of providing grants to states for school districts to implement new school safety and security systems such as armed guards and other options. No way, we can’t do that!

I completely support this.
Mental illness often doesn’t manifest in sufficiently outward ways until late teens or early 20s.

There is NO downside to this, and our side of the debate should support and get ahead of this curve.

Well then expect new lines of semi-automatic rifles to come out lacking the scary looking stuff along with the scary stuff upgrade kits sold primarily as 21st birthday gifts. I´m going to trademark SSU-21.

The voting age should be 30. I´ll budge down to 21 for those in the armed forces. Some of the reasons 18 to 20 year olds are perfect for turning into soldiers are the exact reasons they shouldn´t vote.

ps: This is not an either/or circumstance… We can and should have armed guards at school and better mental health screening, and peer programs, and an end to the ridiculous Obama-era rules that allow a black and Hispanic kids to get “do-overs” and no criminal record for crimes that white and Asian kids would get a record for (which is why this psycho Cruz slipped through the cracks; his adoptive last name). And we can also have an array other gun training for all kids and productive and other defense of technologies as well. And we can and should have a conversation about the debasement and video violence of our national culture. We should do ALL of this.

And this specific thing is definitely the right thing to do. We don’t let kids rent cars until they’re 25 and 25-year-olds can still be on their parents health insurance. Life comes in stages and the frontal cortex is not developed, particularly in young men, until they’re in their mid 20s. Mental illness and suicidal/homicidal tendencies would more likely have “shown” to authorities by Cruz’ 20s ... and this HORRIBLE atrocity could have neen avoided.

As for enlisting in the military… There are batteries of psychological tests to enlist and mentor support in the military in case someone is having violent thoughts of harming them self or harming others. So the obvious answer is: if you wish to enlist in the military at 18 and go through the training and psychological testing — and pass — you will exempt from the rule anyone else has to be 21 or 23 or 25 to have rifles with such easily changed large magazines and such little recoil.

This is absolutely the right thing to do.

Poster #1 is exactly right. And, by the way, the AR in AR-15 does not stand for Assault Rifle. It stands for the name of the company that designed and manufactured the weapon, Armalite.

AR-15’s are not assault rifles. No modern military would ever issue a single shot rifle to their soldiers. Think M-16 or AK47, both can fire full auto.

Do it!

And, while you´re at it, raise the age to vote to 21 too.

After all, read recently most don´t consider themselves an "adult" until they are 24 anyhow. If that´s the case, then why should those 18, 19 and 20 year-old be voting for tax increases and making adult decisions if they themselves don´t consider themselves an adult?

There is no way that a bill will pass Congress listing just one model of rifle like an AR-15. In order to raise the age to buy such a rifle that the Democrats define as being an "Assault Rifle" because of it resembles in outward appearance true assault rifles used by the military, they will have to raise up the age to buy all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. As the AR-15 rifle and its knockoffs are the most popular rifles in America today, they mechanically function just about like every other modern semi-automatic rifle in America today.

The term "AR-15" is a trade mark of the Colt´s Manufacturing Company that manufactured and sold the original and now improved AR-15 rifle. Today there are probably a hundred knock-offs of the AR-15, that are not called AR-15´s, some that do not even look like the AR-15, that are being manufactured by different firearms manufacturers. So if Congress were to pass a law that only affected the Colt manufactured AR-15 rifle, the only rifle called an AR-15, and not all other firearms that functionally operate similar to the Colt AR-15, the bill Congress passes would probably be challenged as an unconstitutional bill of attainer against the Colt Manufacturing Company. Who actually knows, at this juncture, if the Florida shooter even used an actual AR-15 or some yet unidentified knock off.br>
What the Democrats and some wimpy Republicans like Flake really want is to effectively ban all modern firearms that are being sold in America today. So if they can´t get enough political cover from the Republicans to do that, look for whatever inferior bill they actually propose to contain enough poison pills to keep the bill from being passed by Congress or to keep Trump from signing it, so the Democrats can keep using gun control as an issue on into the future.

Flake is a moron.

Many rifles function just like the AR-15 which is NOT an assault weapon. If the AR is blocked people would just buy a different rifle. Then they would want those banned.

Meanwhile, it doesn´t fix the problem because it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GUN! The AR-15 has been sold for over 50 years. The only reason it pops up in mass shootings is that it is a popular rifle, especially after the ban in 1994 - 2004.

It´s like pointing out that GM or Toyota cars are used most often as robbery getaway cars and wanting to ban them to reduce robberies without noting that these brands are the most sold cars and that robberies have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CAR BRAND or the car at all.

Liberals are always looking to get their noses under the tent, looking to eliminate guns completely.

So you are willing to let an 18 year old enlist in the military, train him to use a REAL battle weapon (not an AR-15 which is NOT an "assault rifle") accept that he or she may DIE in defense of YOUR comfortable freedom - and he is ONLY a Second Class citizen whose constitutional rights you have chosen to deny him when he is HOME ON LEAVE?

BTW No. 18, AR-15 is no more a trademark any more, than is Kleenex. Everyone uses it and it denotes a platform and operating system. I assure you it will not be limited to Colt.

By the way, Colt is NOT the original manufacturer, nor did they originate the name. Eugene Stoner designed the firearm which was produced by ArmaLite Industries. And it was the 15th iteration of his design efforts. Hence ARmalite-15. The company was sold in the 60s - several times.

Poster #24 is right. I met the original designers of the Armalite (M-16) rifle well before it became a military issue "assault" rifle back in 1962 at the Association of the US Army Convention at Washington, DC. At the time the basic issue rifle for the army was the M-14 rifle that could be set up to fire either semi automatically or fully automatic. Most were set up to fire semi automatically for the sake of accuracy and to save ammunition. At the time I believe their company was called Armalite and the rifle was then called the Armalite rifle. They had a display there and were still trying to sell the rifle to the US Army. I believe the problem for Armalite was that they did not have the funds or the manufacturing facilities to mass produce that rifle if the army did order it, Colt did.

What is an assault rifle? Those scary looking things with black plastic stocks you see the SWAT teams waving around? A M-1A (M-14 semi-auto copy made by Springfield) with a wooden stock looks like an old-fashioned rifle - but it fires a .308 bullet, a lot more power than your regular AR-type gun in .223, which is the AR´s usual caliber. Heck, you can get an old Remington Woodsmaster, a semi-auto deer rifle from the 1950s that shoots the same .30-06 round that carried the U.S. through WWII, and you can get 10 round magazines for those. MUCH more power than a standard AR-type in .223. Or, if you like the .223 round, you can get a Ruger Mini-14, which is a scaled-down version of the military M-14, which shoots the .223 round, for which you can get a 30 round magazine. Every bit as deadly, just as big a magazine as the AR, but in a nice, old fashioned wooden stock. Of course, you CAN get the black or tan plastic stock in aftermarket, which is lighter, and make it scary-looking if you want. And if you want volume of shots vs. power, you can get the Ruger 10/22, which shoots a .22 LR round, which comes with a standard 10 round mag, but you can find 100 round magazines for those. You can even find the aftermarket stock to make it look scary! So what are you going say they can´t buy? Personally, I´ve got no problem with raising the rifle-buying age, but if you allow them to start limiting, you know they won´t STOP there.

I use to agree with you #5, but things have changed. The newer generations have become snowflakes with little knowledge of the real world and have a serious lack of maturity for their age. While an 18 to 21 yr old today may have a strong physical presence, they often lack intelligence to handle things that require discipline and common sense.

Also get rid of schools as gun-free zones (aka targets). And for the cherry on top, maybe begin to recognize again the importance of Dad in his son´s upbringing.

On a related note, I see that the amorphous, made-up political term ´assault weapon´ is being abandoned by the grabbers and their "news" outlet mouthpieces. Going ever more flagrantly mendacious, they have apparently decided to label scary-looking semi-autos as outright "assault rifles", a term which actually has a specific meaning which does not include semi-auto only rifles. They don´t care any more, they are just going to call them "assault rifles" and "machine guns" anyway, evidently.

Anti gun politicians want to raise the age for a civilian person to be a qualified firearms purchaser to 21 years of age, while a person can enlist in the military at age 17 and be qualified to carry and operate some of the most deadly firearms in the world, including real assault rifles. While some Democrat college professors are now calling for the voting age to be lowered to the age of 16 so that very impressionable and know nothing teenagers who don’t have a clue about how the world turns, and who are being influenced by leftist teachers and popular teen culture can vote. Don’t think everything these days is about securing a political edge, think again!

The Supreme Court on Tuesday will hear whether California is violating free speech rights by forcing anti-abortion pregnancy centers to post information about the availability of state-funded abortions. A decision is expected by the end of June and could trigger legal changes in other states, such as similar laws in Hawaii and Illinois. Depending on the outcome, reproductive rights advocates may seek to overturn anti-abortion laws that require doctors to tell women that abortions lead to mental health problems or breast cancer, disclosures that abortion advocates say are false. Some school counselors and officials were so concerned about the mental stability of Nikolas Cruz, accused in last month’s Florida school massacre, that they decided to have him forcibly committed more than a year before the shooting. However, the recommendation was never acted upon. Documents in the criminal case against Cruz showed that school officials at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and a sheriff´s deputy recommended in September 2016 that Cruz be involuntarily committed for mental evaluation under Florida´s Baker Act for at least three days, sources confirmed to Fox News on Sunday. The documents, part of Cruz´s criminal case in

WASHINGTON— When the ax fell on Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, his spokeswoman was half a world away, a distance he and his inner circle preferred and enforced. Now, it´s Tillerson who´s on his way out after his unceremonious firing by President Donald Trump, and Heather Nauert whose star is ascendant.U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Nauert are among the few women in the Trump administration with high-profile voices on foreign policy. Only three State Department officials — all men — now outrank Nauert, a former Fox News anchor who declined comment for this story.Nauert´s meteoric rise comes even though just a

MOSCOW— Early results and an exit poll showed that Vladimir Putin handily won a fourth term as Russia’s president Sunday, adding six years in the Kremlin for the man who has led the world’s largest country for all of the 21st century. The vote was tainted by widespread reports of ballot-box stuffing and forced voting, but the complaints will likely do little to undermine Putin. The Russian leader’s popularity remains high despite his suppression of dissent and reproach from the West over Russia’s increasingly aggressive stance in world affairs and alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. election.Putin’s main challenges in the

Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg is accusing politicians of being the “b**ch of the NRA” in a new ad for the March for Our Lives protest. Hogg posted the video advertisement for the March 24 protest on his Twitter account, asking “#WhatIf we could go to school without fearing for our lives?” The video starts on an edgy note, with Hogg glaring into the camera and declaring, “What if our politicians weren’t the b**ch of the NRA?” “What if we all voted and said this was not okay?” he continued. “What if we stood up as Americans and fought for our freedom and our children’s lives? My name is David Hogg and I stand with

Barbra Streisand said she´s never suffered sexual harassment but has felt abused by the media. During a tribute to Streisand´s decades of TV music specials and other programs, producer and long-time admirer Ryan Murphy queried her about her career, the #MeToo movement and her aversion to interviews. ´Never,´ she replied when asked if she had been sexually mistreated. ´I wasn´t like those pretty girls with those nice little noses. Maybe that´s why.´ She acknowledged the power of protests against gender inequality sweeping through Hollywood and society.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) scolded President Trump for celebrating the firing of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe on Friday night, telling him to “gloat now, but you will be fired soon.” “And it’s not going to be done cowardly, as you’ve done to so many who’ve served you,” Swalwell tweeted Saturday. “There’s a storm gathering, Mr. President, and it’s going to wipe out you and your corrupt organization all the way down to the studs.” (Snip) The Democrat, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, was responding to Trump’s tweet celebrating McCabe’s firing. Hillary Clinton provided an explanation for some recent comments she made that she understood ´upset or offended´ some Americans – statements that drew criticism from fellow Democrats and the Trump White House alike. ´I understand how some of what I said upset people and can be misinterpreted. I meant no disrespect to any individual or group,´ she said in a Facebook post. ´And I want to look to the future as much as anybody.´ Clinton, on a trip to India, had talked about how her voters came from economically advantaged places in comparison to Trump voters, and also noted how white women

First there was the casual sexism: the reason white women didn’t back her when she ran for president, Hillary Clinton believes, is “a sort of ongoing pressure to vote the way that your husband, your boss, your son, whoever, believes you should.” Have you noticed that her sneering always seems to take the same form? She’s become the queen of the contemptuous listicle that tails off into a snarling “whatever.” Remember the formulation in the speech where she came up with the term “basket of deplorables?” “You could put half of Trump´s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” Hillary said.

A prominent Republican says that Donald Trump would doom his presidency if he fires special counsel Robert Mueller. Sen Lindsey Graham, during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union”, said that Mr Mueller is following the evidence where it takes him as he investigates Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election. Getting rid of Mr Mueller, the senator said, would be a step too far. “If he tried to do that, that would be the beginning of the end of his presidency, because we´re a rule of law nation,” Mr Graham said. ”I think it´s very important he be allowed to do

Democratic lawmakers have offered to hire fired former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe so that he can qualify for his pension. McCabe´s employment was terminated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions less than 48 hours before he would have qualified for his pension, a day that was also his 50th birthday. Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., asked McCabe on Twitter to "call him." "I could use a good two-day report on the biggest crime families in Washington, D.C.," he wrote. Pocan was responding to a tweet by MSNBC journalist Andrea Mitchell, who said if a member of Congress were to hire him

Republican Jeff Flake delivered a speech Thursday at the annual ´Politics and Eggs´ event at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. Flake said that during the administration of President Donald Trump, conservatives were an endangered species and the Republican Party had surrendered to a "propaganda-fueled dystopian view." Flake, who recently called for a 2020 Republican primary challenger against President Trump, is in the group of people who might do just that. "I haven´t ruled it out," he told CNN later in this same day. "I stand before you today the rarest of species," the retiring moderate Republican

Armed sheriff´s deputies appeared on the scene of the recent school massacre in Florida while kids were still being murdered inside. But the deputies failed to storm the building to apprehend the killer, to rescue the assaulted, to stop the bleeding and to comfort the dying. They failed to do their jobs. Instead, they cowered behind their patrol cars waiting for, well, apparently waiting for the shooting to stop. Some 150 bullets and 17 lives later, it finally did and the killer walked away. Only then did the deputies enter the building. About that, President Donald Trump characteristically said what he thought. He

Andrew McCabe, the onetime FBI deputy director long scorned by President Donald Trump and just fired by the attorney general, kept personal memos detailing interactions with the president that have been provided to the special counsel’s office and are similar to the notes compiled by dismissed FBI chief James Comey, The Associated Press has learned. The memos could factor into special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation as his team examines Trump campaign ties to Russia and possible obstruction of justice. McCabe’s memos include details of his own interactions with the president, according to a person with direct
