Man who died in Yellowstone
was looking for hidden treasure

BILLINGS, Mont. — A 53-year-old Illinois man who fell to his death in Yellowstone National Park last year was looking for a supposed hidden cache of gold and jewels that has inspired thousands to hunt in vain across remote corners of the Western U.S., according to a report by park authorities. Billings, Montana, news station KULR-TV reports that Jeff Murphy of Batavia, Illinois, was looking for the treasure that antiquities dealer and author Forrest Fenn said he stashed somewhere in the Rocky Mountains several years ago. (Snip) Murphy is one of at least several people who have died while looking

Comments:
These people have no idea how risky it is to wander into remote areas by themselves.

It could have been worse - he could have been eaten by a grizzly bear, a wolf or a mountain lion.

The laws of physics will be strictly enforced. Many folks live too much of the time in a flat, paved world with heated buildings nearby and guardrails around most hazards.
I have spent a great deal of time in Wyoming and Yellowstone country. In the open wilderness, there are many, many hazards of terrain, weather and water which unwary city dwellers seem to often handle fairly poorly.

It is a shame he fell, but those seeking treasure in the wilderness need to be quite aware of the omnipresent natural dangers.

My short reading of the poem seems to indicate it is more likely in NM or southern CO than WY, but I consider it a fool´s errand and have spent only a few minutes reading and pondering the poem, have no intent to seek the treasure.

Good luck all, be careful, the natural world is unforgiving and uncaring. Something as simple as falling into the water and getting wet far afield without the right gear and skills can be easily fatal, even in summer.

Gold Fever: I had it once. I picked up a trail of stolen gold in New Mexico and spent a small fortune searching for it. The story of my lost treasure is real- at least I proved that. And I got - I believe - pretty close to finding it. But, I woke up after 15 years of off and on looking and investing, which was getting worse and came to the conclusion, this was going to ruin my family, our retirement and was likely to never materialize in the find. I tossed all my camping, exploring and finding stuff in a garage sale and quit it. The quest will consume your soul. All I have left are the old maps...which I also paid a large sum of money for. Nothing but memories now I and got to see some absolutely beautiful God´s country. But, if you ever catch that gold Fever, you had better watch out.

LANSING — The unprecedented outpouring of activism from students after the shooting at Marjorie Douglas Stoneman High School in Parkland, Fla., in February is the genesis for a bill introduced in the Legislature last week that would change the voting age in Michigan to 16. "We allow 16-year-olds to go off and get jobs and pay taxes, but we fail to allow them to exercise their voice come election time," said Sen. David Knezek, D-Dearborn Heights. "Young people are setting aside their differences and identifying issues they think need to change. And they can do everything to get that change

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) was fined nine times for supporters´ homophobic chanting during the qualifying campaign. It has repeatedly asked fans to refrain from using the slurs. Javier Ruiz Galindo, head of the National House of Mexico for fans in Moscow, said the chant could be perceived in "many ways". "It´s not necessarily meant to insult somebody," he said.

The result raises questions about the future of a historic but controversial peace deal with Farc rebels. Mr Duque, who is supported by former President Alvaro Uribe, has said he will overhaul the 2016 agreement which gave the rebels places in Congress. The orthodox economist also says he will revisit crimes allegedly committed by the rebels during the brutal five-decade conflict with the government. But is there a candy you love so much that you would name your child after it? Eric and Renee Cupp of Elizabethtown, North Carolina, said that yes, in fact, there is. With the last name "Cupp," Eric and Renee deliberately chose their daughter´s name, Reese Eve, after their favorite peanut butter and chocolate treat. Roseanne Barr has become untouchable due to the "Valerie Jarrett/Ambien/Planet of the Apes" controversy, irrevocably contaminated by racism. This presents a problem for ABC, which canceled her revived show but wants the show to return in some form because it had high ratings.
