Romney Is a Misfit for America
National Review, by Michael Brendan Dougherty

Original Article

He has no idea how to make a majority of voters choose him. Mitt’s back. The former governor of Massachusetts and occasional native son of Michigan has a new persona: Mr. Utah. He’s going to bring Utah conservatism to the whole Republican party and to the country at large. Wholesome, efficient, industrious, faithful. “Utah has a lot to teach the politicians in Washington,” he says in announcing his Senate campaign. Maybe. There’s always been something unstable about Mitt Romney’s political identity.

He,like McCain, should be in perpetual repentance for throwing away what should have been a win. IOW, stay out of our faces.

The article gives pros and cons about him, but for me the bottom line is I dont trust him. Like so many politicians, he sees which way the crowd is going then runs out front and pretends he is leading.
He is the new world order candidate, backed by some of the most odious people in politics. I (almost) wish I was from Utah so I could vote against him.

Wouldn´t NR be cheering an anti-Trumper? Isn´t this their idea of a ´good conservative´ - willing to sell out anyone and anything to make a buck?

A weasel that gave Massachusetts what ´they´ wanted - Romneycare, and probably was ok with Obamacare too? I hope Utahns ask him should Utah have Romney care in their state? Would he keep and ´fix´ Obamacare? Is he in favor of ´reasonable´ gun restrictions? Are our taxes too high or s/b higher? Is Federal spending at the right level? Is Federal debt too high, or ´just the correct capital structure´?

To the extent that a Romney win in Utah could at least help the Senate under pubbie control, I´ll have to swallow really hard and accept a Romney win. Unless another pubbie candidate surfaces quickly who can out-primary Romney and win in November, let´s roll with this. We need two pubbie Senators from Utah. It´s a must.

Romney said he doesn´t like populists, derogatorily referring to those that support Trump. Populists, you see, are ordinary taxpaying American people, and snobs, like Romney, do not think ordinary Americans should have a say in how their lives are ran, that spoiled rich kids, like Romney, are the only ones smart enough to run things.

I just recall how he let the Dems roll right over him when they claimed he took insurance away from a woman who died (multi years later after her husband was long gone from Romney employ) and never defended himself. I can name thing after thing along these lines. He WAS prescient re: Russia in the Obama debate but then just looked embarrassed at "The 90´s are calling and....." response rather than defending his own assessment. That is where Trump, crass and embarrassing as he may be, has it all over Romney...he fights back! Yet I fear that Romney may do little more than sabotage the man he so dislikes if elected to office---which he will be, by the way. Just what we need, more foxes inside the henhouse. We already have John Kascich!

Mormon old men run the GOP machine in Utah.
They even forced the GOP head, Rob Anderson, to apologize for calling Mitt a carpetbagger here.
And, most important, they will NOT allow another Republican to really run against Mitt on the primary.
Their modus operendi is to place a few strawmen on the ballot but to have each of them drop out before the primary date & throw all their support to the favorite: Mitt.
I´ve seen it too many times....

How many other senators are judged by how they fit America? Romney is running to represent Utah. And Utah values which mirror the values of well behaved evangelicals.

Obama in his Jade Helm exercise listed the south and Utah as the threats--must be the guns and the freedom loving Scots Irish?

This "The Mormons are coming, the Mormons are coming" reeks of the political threat the LDS in Missouri as a voting block got them driven out and an extermination order made in mid 1800´s.

So what´s to fear in Mitt who was raised in Michigan and rubbed shoulders with people from all religions and walks of life?

Would be amusing if not so irritating to me.

Conservatives tend to be skeptical of joining great political movements because they tend to be skeptical of both politics and movements that are great. They prefer the little platoon, the shire, which they know to be safe—or at least probably safer than what lies beyond. Not all politics may be local, but all politics that isn’t local tends toward the totalitarian, however far short of it it may actually fall. That sounds almost like a philosophy of government—though not a government that any American alive today has experienced. But times can change, and they have with the election of Donald Trump.

How many divisions does the Deep State have? During the so-called McCarthy era, a single question cut across all partisan and philosophical lines: Were you on Senator Joe McCarthy’s side or not? McCarthy’s conspiratorial, bullying, blunderbuss anti-Communism and “red-baiting” was either defensible or it wasn’t. Remarkably, for many on the right, the question of whether you were “with” McCarthy almost completely crowded out the question of whether or not you were right-wing or left-wing, Democrat or Republican, or even where you stood on the question of Communism itself.
