The Supreme Court pressed Congress on Tuesday to update the country’s data privacy laws for the Internet age, as justices grappled with tricky questions about the reach of federal powers over data that’s controlled by an American company but kept on servers located overseas. The case before the justices involves the government’s demand to see emails of a Microsoft customer. Microsoft says contents of the emails are stored in Ireland, and releasing the information would conflict with that country’s laws. Justices, though, said the 32-year-old Stored Communications Act, which governs the situation, never envisioned that kind of

A federal court judge once accused by President Donald Trump of being biased against him because he’s “Mexican” and a “hater” paved the way for construction of a section of Trump’s proposed wall along the U.S. southern border. U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel in San Diego sided Tuesday with the Homeland Security Department, which asserted authority under federal immigration law to waive compliance with environmental protection statutes because 14 miles of existing fencing near San Diego is “no longer optimal for border patrol operations.” The government argued in court papers that the law allowing it to sidestep

Special Counsel Robert Mueller moved Tuesday to dismiss nearly two-dozen charges against former Trump campaign associate Rick Gates, in the wake of his guilty plea last week. Mueller’s team filed a motion to drop 22 tax and bank fraud charges against Gates. The filing was tied to Gates’ agreement last week to plead guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States and lying to the FBI. Under the terms of the deal, the government had agreed it would move to dismiss another set of charges brought against him more recently in a Virginia federal court. Those charges covered everything from alleged tax fraud to bank fraud.

For a man of many tag lines, it’s one of his most popular. “Buy American” is right up there with “Make America Great Again” when President Trump takes to the podium or opens up his Twitter app. Mr. Trump is most at home making a strong case for American workers, and the businesses that employ them. “I’m here to deliver a simple message: there has never been a better time to hire, to build, to invest and to grow in the United States,” Mr. Trump told the “global elite?” crowd in Davos just weeks ago. But for those who watch the defense industry closely, the refrain raises a curious question: Will Mr. Trump’s “Buy American” campaign

Talk of “sex change” is a scientific misnomer, argues philosopher Ryan T. Anderson in a recent article, since it is impossible to change someone’s sex by bombarding them with hormones or performing cosmetic surgery on them. A person can pretend to be a member of the opposite sex, Dr. Anderson notes, but it will never be more than play-acting since one’s biological sex is a physical reality outside the individual’s control. “Modern science shows that our sexual organization begins with our DNA and development in the womb, and that sex differences manifest themselves in many bodily systems and organs, all the way

If you had seen a doctor who misdiagnosed your illness, prescribed a remedy that made it worse, and subsequently falsified the record, would you return to him for medical advice? The legacy media have done precisely that in the case of Ezekiel Emanuel. Dr. Emanuel is best known as an advocate of health care rationing and a key architect of the “Affordable Care Act.” In other words, he believes the malady troubling American medicine is that we provide too much of it. The treatment he prescribed — Obamacare — was a disaster and he consistently overstates the efficacy of that

Maine also passed bills to ditch daylight saving time. Arizona and Hawaii don´t abide by daylight saving time. The problem Florida faces is that while the law lets states opt out of
