How Wall Street’s ‘fear gauge’ is being
rigged, according to one whistleblower

Market Watch, by Mark DeCambre, Francine McKenna

Original Article

Posted By:Harlowe, 2/14/2018 12:32:43 AM

One of the most popular measures of volatility is being manipulated, charges one individual who submitted a letter anonymously to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The letter makes the claim to regulators that fake quotes for the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.26% are skewing levels of the Cboe Volatility Index VIX, -2.50% which reflects bearish and bullish options bets 30-days in the future on the S&P 500 to gauge implied stock-market volatility. The flaw allows trading firms with sophisticated algorithms to move the VIX up or down by simply posting quotes on S&P

Comments:
The flaw has to do with sophisticated algorithms used by trading firms to move the VIX up or down and led to “multiple billions in profits effectively taken away from institutional and retail investors and cashed in by unethical electronic option market makers.” - Interesting, especially considering how the Dow Jones plummeted 361 points just hours before President Trump’s State of the Union Address. Coincidence or affirmation of justifiable suspicions about the timing of that January 30, 2018 triple-digit drop?

On her way out the White House door and out of her job as national-security adviser, Susan Rice writes an email-to-self. Except it’s not really an email-to-self. It is quite consciously an email for the record. Her term having ended 15 minutes before, Rice was technically back in private life, where private people have private email accounts--even notepads if they want to scratch out a reminder the old-fashioned way. Yet, for at least a few more minutes, Rice still had access to her government email account. She could still generate an official record. That’s what she wanted her brief email

Salt Lake City — A Utah State Senator says a woman may have tried to entrap him at his hotel room, and lawmakers are asking for a police investigation. Sen. Evan Vickers, R-Cedar City, told reporters he was getting ready to leave his hotel room at the Little America on Thursday night when a woman knocked on his door. A newly released version of GOP senators’ criminal referral for Trump dossier author Christopher Steele appears to support key claims from the controversial memo on alleged surveillance abuse released last week by House Republicans and the White House. (Snip) A central point of dispute is the Nunes document’s claim that the salacious, anti-Trump dossier was crucial to the FBI’s efforts to seek a surveillance warrant for a Trump associate and that the applications omitted the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign’s funding for the research via Glenn Simpson’s Fusion GPS firm--which hired Steele.

Democrats immediately politicized the Florida school shooting that left at least 17 people dead on Wednesday and demanded gun control legislation, even before it was known how the shooter got his gun and whether any proposed legislation would have stopped it. Some Democrats blamed Republicans for Wednesday’s tragedy, without citing any evidence whatsoever. “Republicans should pray for forgiveness, for not only their complacency and dereliction of duty, but in contrition for the men, women and children we continue to lay to rest because of senseless gun violence and the cowardly inaction from Congress,”

President Trump’s legal team is citing a three-pillar argument to convince investigators, and the public, that President Trump shouldn’t sit down for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller. Mr. Mueller wants access to the president as part of an inquiry into suspected obstruction of justice in the firing of the special counsel’s longtime friend, FBI Director James B. Comey, in May. The president’s legal team has resisted but not given a firm no. Here are the arguments against an interview. • The White House has given Mr. Mueller unprecedented access to White House documents and people. • There is no stated crime. •
