Clearwater City Council candidates

CLEARWATER — At a recent City Council election debate, the first question pitched to the four candidates was: What is the biggest problem facing Clearwater right now? Seat 5 incumbent Hoyt Hamilton answered in code. "I’m willing to work with anybody, but they have to be open and honest in how they communicate and we haven’t always had that, so I think one of the biggest problems trying to move Clearwater forward is getting people to communicate openly and honestly with what we’re trying to do." Wait. Who is "they"? Which people are not being honest? Asked in a later interview if he was

Comments:
The uniformed wind up automatons striding around downtown Clearwater with their beepers and keychains have nothing in common with the locals, and don´t mix with the outside world. They´re just into L. Ron´s every twisted thought. Getting this mind-controlling cult out of town won´t be easy; they´re deeply lodged like a Deliverance deer hunter´s arrow in the rapist hillbilly´s sternum at the riverfront. Well, you pulled it out; let´s see if you can pull that out.

Asked once whether he believed in God, French president Emmanuel Macron replied, “That’s a real question, a complex question. I undoubtedly believe in a transcendence. I am not sure any more that I believe in a God. Yes, I believe in transcendence.” Another real and complex question for him to answer is that regarding the relationship of the French Republic with Islam. France is a militantly secular country whose militancy has seemed only to grow stronger as the Church grows weaker. France rejects all connection between religion and state; in the mouth of a French intellectual, the words très catho (very

On the evening of February 14, I wrote a post called “Senate May Be Perilously Close to Passing Liberal Amnesty Legislation.” The legislation in question was sponsored by the so-called Common Sense Coalition, consisting of eight Republican Senators (Alexander, Collins, Gardner, Graham, Flake, Isakson, Murkowski, and Rounds), seven Democrats, and one Independent. It granted amnesty for nearly two millions “Dreamers” and funded a wall. It did nothing about the diversity lottery and nothing meaningful about chain migrations. The legislation also told the Executive Branch how it should prioritize immigration enforcement. For illegal immigrants guilty only of “unlawful presence,” immigration officers were to

TAMPA — For more than two months, the parents of the man police say committed four murders in Seminole Heights have refused to talk to prosecutors building a case against their son. Today, a judge could decide if that loyalty will land them in jail. Howell Donaldson Jr. and Rosita Donaldson are scheduled to appear this morning before Circuit Judge Mark Wolfe in a civil contempt hearing. If they continue to refuse to talk to prosecutors, they could face sanctions, including fines or possible jail time. The judge could even order them jailed until they cooperate, said Ralph Fernandez, an attorney whose firm represents

Nineteen-year-old Nikolas Cruz -- who mowed down Parkland, Florida, high school students and teachers, killing 17 and wounding many others -- had been thrown out of the same school for threatening his classmates. He had been bragging to them about having a personal armory and implying he would use it, justifiably frightening them. Subsequently he posted a photo of that armory, including assault weaponry, on Instagram as well as a photo of a target riddled with bullet holes with the recommendation to try it as "group therapy." He also posted photos of dead animals, well known as a hallmark of serial

As Steve said this morning, it is pretty much pointless to comment on mass shooting events before the facts are known. But that hasn’t stopped liberals from going into full hysteria mode, as they always do. And perhaps the dust has settled enough to allow some preliminary observations. Here are mine: 1. The facts, to the extent they have been reported, are very weird. The murderer, Nikolas Cruz, packed up a semiautomatic rifle, a gas mask and plenty of ammunition and took an Uber to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Apparently the Uber driver saw nothing amiss. Cruz shot some people

The death by airstrike of a large number of Russian "mercenary troops" allegedly attacking a US backed position in Syria is reminder that hybrid/proxy/low-intensity conflict is not without risk. The New York Times described the scale of the incident. "Aleksandr Ionov, a Russian businessman working in Syria offering security and other services ... estimated after conversations with associates in several private military organizations that more than 200 Russians might have been killed. ... not all those killed were Russian: Some of the paid fighters came from other countries that were once part of the Soviet Union."

It is usually easier for an outsider to defend a person or a group that is attacked than for the person or group. In that vein, this Jew would like to defend evangelicals and other Christians who support President Donald Trump. They are regularly attacked as religious hypocrites who give Christianity in general, and evangelical Christianity in particular, a bad name. The people writing such things are often Christians, including evangelicals. Ross Douthat, New York Times columnist, wrote: "Whether the subject is the debauched pagan in the White House, the mall-haunted candidacy of Roy Moore or the larger question of

Special prosecutor counsel Bob Mueller has one significant scalp on the wall: that of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who pled guilty to one count of lying to the FBI and has yet to be sentenced. But, in a brilliant column, Byron York reviews the sequence of events as we have tortuously come to know them. Based on what we now know (or think we know), it is highly doubtful whether Flynn did anything wrong at all. It is a given that there was nothing wrong with Flynn’s talking to the Russian ambassador, or discussing sanctions with him. As the

San Salvador - Last week, President Trump torpedoed an immigration deal put forward by a bipartisan group of senators. The Senate responded by rejecting his own, harsher plan. By the end of the week, the immigration debate seemed deadlocked between the fate of the Dreamers and the fate of the wall. But one thing is clear: Any plan that purports to make America safer by making it harder for immigrants to obtain legal status and increasing deportations will actually do the opposite. These proposals, embraced by Mr. Trump, are the same decades-old policies that helped transform Mr. Trump’s archenemy, Mara Salvatrucha
