Obamacare’s Own Private Idaho
American Spectator, by David Catron

While the nation remains transfixed by the deep state skullduggery employed to install Hillary Clinton in the White House, a quiet revolution has been gathering steam in flyover country. The latest skirmish was fought on February 7, when the Idaho House Health and Welfare Committee voted to send Governor Butch Otter’s less restrictive alteration to Obamacare to the full Idaho House of Representatives. The opening salvo took the form of a January executive order from Otter requiring the state’s Department of Insurance to examine all options for making health coverage affordable for Idahoans, whether or not they complied with Obamacare:

"Obamacare apologists tell us there is a simple solution to Idaho’s problems — Medicaid expansion. That claim is debunked by the fiscal disaster John Kasich created in Ohio by expanding the program."

This is what our useless congress should be working on instead of conniving to get more illegal aliens into the country. America first! Once Obamacare´s destructive tentacles are detached, insurance rates will be almost reasonable. Not providing coverage for the able-bodied unemployed will be further incentive for them to become employed.

Reset the parental coverage age from 26 back down to what it was and have colleges include medical coverage in their tuition - it´s mostly wasted money anyway. Let employers offer whatever coverage it takes to keep employees. Number of employees should not matter. Take away the premium healthcare for congress. That is the incentive it will take to get them off their butts and fix this.

Hollywood’s biggest night of the year turned into one of the smallest as viewers refused to watch a conga line of virtue-signaling celebrities preen about politics. According to the Los Angeles Times, fewer people watched the Oscars in 2018 than any other year: The audience for ABC´s Sunday annual telecast of the Oscars declined for a fourth consecutive year, according to Nielsen data, dropping to an all-time low of 26.5 million viewers. The dip of nearly 20% from last year put it under the previous low of 32 million in 2008. Yet, after the exploitative and propaganda-laced CNN town hall addressing the Parkland

The New Challenge to Obamacare

Readers may be familiar with a new constitutional challenge by 20 state attorneys general to the Affordable Care Act, which Ilya blogged about here. Their argument, in a nutshell, is that with the amount of the penalty for failing to have health insurance now set to zero, the individual insurance "requirement"--AKA the "individual mandate"--can no longer be justified as a tax. This is so because one of the essential characteristics of a tax is that it raises at least some revenue for the government. For this reason, the "saving construction" employed by Chief Justice Roberts no longer applies, as it

The prevailing wisdom suggests that there will be a Democratic wave election in 2018. In a manner that suggests that little was learned from the 2016 primary or general elections, pundits and analysts seem so committed to this narrative that they promote it even when the data point in the other direction. The primaries in Texas on Tuesday are a good case in point. Early-voting numbers suggested good news for the Democrats: 465,245 voters took part in early voting for their primary, as compared to 420,329 for the Republicans’. This is a big gain for Democrats over their totals in the previous

The big news from Korea is that the communists are prepared to give up nuclear weapons “if the military threat to the North” were “eliminated and its security guaranteed.” The quotes are from a statement of South Korea’s president, Moon Jae-in, following meetings between the two sides. The Times calls it the first time North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has been “willing to discuss giving up nuclear weapons in return for security guarantees from the United States.” Mr. Kim’s father, of course, is another matter. Kim Jong Il, the Dear Leader as he was known, tried this scam with George W.

Has Donald Trump sparked off a trade war? His plans for a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and 10 percent tariff on aluminum have shocked friend and foe alike. China is outraged; so are Canada, Japan, and South Korea—allies that in fact export more steel to the U.S. than China does. They stand to be hurt worst if they aren’t granted exemptions or cut special deals by the president. Trump accuses the Chinese of ‘dumping’ steel into the American market, while the legal grounds for his new tariffs rest in the idea that strategically critical manufacturing is endangered by

During a recent speech at the American Enterprise Institute, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch committed a social blunder — he told the truth about Obamacare and the people who support it. After pointing out that the GOP Congress had done away with the law’s individual mandate tax, and denouncing the “Affordable Care Act” in general, Hatch said those who still support it are “the stupidest, dumbass people I’ve ever met.” He was attacked by the Democrats and their media toadies, of course, whereupon he apologized. That apology was disappointing. Hatch’s comments about the intellectual limitations of Obamacare’s supporters were dead on.

A sizable portion of the American population has been convulsing with outrage at President Trump for more than a year. Millions of people who previously took only mild interest in politics have participated in protests, fumed as they stayed riveted to news out of Washington and filled social media accounts once devoted to family updates and funny videos with furious political commentary. Yet public life on the whole has remained surprisingly calm. A significant factor in keeping the peace has surely been anticipatory catharsis: The widespread expectations of a big Democratic wave in the coming midterm elections are containing and channeling

Last night I watched “Paper Heads,” a 1995 documentary about Communism in what was then Czechoslovakia. It mixed propaganda films from the regime with testimony from people who had been tortured in communist prisons, or whose relatives had been abused in some way by the state. It was a crude but very powerful film. All that talk about brotherhood and shared prosperity and justice concealed cruelty, injustice, and murder of those who stood between the Party and Paradise. The most chilling part of the film, at least to me, were the clips of the 1950s show trials.

SACRAMENTO, California — California Governor Jerry Brown complained Wednesday that the Trump administration “is basically going to war against the state of California” after Attorney General Jeff Sessions filed a lawsuit Tuesday evening against California’s “sanctuary state” laws. The lawsuit targets three laws in particular: the Immigrant Worker Protection Act (HB 450), the Inspection and Review of Facilities Housing Federal Detainees law (AB 103); and the California Values Act (SB 54). The Trump administration argues that California’s laws are unconstitutional under the Supremacy Clause, which states that federal law “shall be the supreme Law of the Land.” Sessions flew to

California’s water regulation agency approved new measures Tuesday that will allow recycled water – water that once ran through the sewers – to be added to the state’s reservoirs, The San Francisco Chronicle reported. The new rules are expected to be implemented by 2023. She says the new regulations could potentially affect all 36 of California’s reservoirs that serve as the main source of the state’s municipal drinking water. The

Sunday, March 11, is the start of daylight saving time across the country. But it might be the last time people in Florida have to switch their clocks. The legislature there voted overwhelmingly to abolish the biannual changing of the clock, and stick with daylight saving time year round. Last year, Massachusetts considered a similar move by switching to Atlantic Standard Time, which would permanently set their clocks ahead one hour. Maine also passed bills to ditch daylight saving time. Arizona and Hawaii don´t abide by daylight saving time. The problem Florida faces is that while the law lets states opt out of
