Jeff Sessions Says Opioid Addiction

6 Studies That Say Otherwise

Reason, by C.J. Ciaramella

Attorney General Jeff Sessions thinks marijuana may be a gateway to prescription opioid and heroin addiction. In fact, a number of academic studies show lower rates of opioid abuse and overdoses in states that have legalized medical marijuana. Speaking at a Heritage Foundation event last night in honor of the late Ronald Reagan´s birthday, Sessions lamented the "permissive rhetoric" and media coverage surrounding marijuana and other drugs. "We don´t think illegal drug use is ´recreation.´ Lax enforcement, permissive rhetoric and the media have undermined the essential need to say no to drug use. Don´t start," Sessions said. "That´s what President Trump

So very disappointing--Jeff Sessions failure to take firm, complete charge in the face of a treasonous plot to overthrow the election of the President of the United States .

Glad(sarc) Jeff found useful work investigating weed and pills.

Oh nice cherry picking of studies to compare apples to oranges. Most of the stories listed compare the use of ´medical´ marijuana to some opiod related death. Now medical marijuana is a misnomer as it is really a prescribe drung with very specific indications under a doctors supervise and it is n[t really marijuana. Its a synthetic derivative of THC. So its different form pot. Also, the out comes are not cause and outcome specific. They are noted outcomes related to some chery picked variable. People using medical marijuana had fewer car realted deaths with opiods invovled. That dosen´tmean theat the medical marijuana produced less car wrecks. It doesn´tcontrol the ogther variables like whethter the pwerson using medical marijuana is unable to drive. As in terminal disease.

Sorry Mr. Sessions, but the true gateway of drugs is alcohol and more people get addicted to opiates through their doctors or a friend doin you a "favor". DEA put pot in the same category as heroin because they reap big money from doing so. Besides, has AG Sessions even heard of the attempted and maybe still going on coup in America?

The writer speaks bull pies. The drug of choice does not matter, the problem is the addictive personality. It may begin with cigarettes and alcohol because those are legal and easier to reach but usually, whatever is handy will do. Those who have marijuana would lose the incentive and ambition to procure anything else, thus the lower opioid use.

Just like blaming shootings on guns, the drugs themselves are not the culprit, willing addicts are.

This has been argued for 50 years getting to where we are now-nowhere. We are a coddling cradle to grave no worries man society. That gives people the wherewithall to get stoned, be unproductive, and still have a roof and an income. Until that ends, #12 is right. A certain % of the population will flake out on something. It doesnt matter what. Chasing potheads is a colossal waste of time.

I like Jeff Sessions but this is an utterly ignorant thing to say. This man is completely clueless on the subject of marijuana. The ONLY link between weed and opiates is the fact that they´re purchased through similar channels, hence the exposure to other types of drugs. Remove the link and that problem disappears. It baffles me how a person can be intelligent enough to make it to Attorney General of the United States and still be so uninformed as to make such a blatantly ridiculous statement.

I´d say "get the popcorn and enjoy the spectacle" if the argument had any entertainment value; but after putting up for 40-plus years with arguments masquerading as debate I see it as more of a tedious time-killer than anything else (both the argument and the drug).

I don´t have a craving for it, He has added gabapentin to the mix. Jeff Sessions, if you are not a doctor, then shut your mouth. My quality of life has improved, but not perfect. I am 74. My guess is opiod problems are mostly caused by illegal street sales.

#1 and associated posters how about backing up your statements with some real study´s done by unaffiliated real scientific research to support your notion or theory´s that marijuana is a gateway drug.
Its interesting that the main lobbies that are always in the background fighting legalization is the alcohol and opioid pushing pharmaceutical companies. If it was a gateway you would think the opposite would be true.
What about all the well documented studies of real medical benefits for epilepsy patients, glaucoma, cancer etc.... ?

No. AG Jeff Sessions is wrong. As a person of no experience but strong opinions on this issue, what could he possibly know besides his prejudice against the longhairs he encountered in college? The real gateway drugs are the legal ones: alcohol and cigarettes, and alcohol is the worst drug of all, the most debilitating, especially on the highway.

Like Dr. Carroll in Reefer Madness (1936), Sessions is fixated and will not be deterred. Harpoon that Green Whale!

From Reefer Madness: Bureau Official: Here is an example: A fifteen-year-old lad apprehended in the act of staging a holdup - fifteen years old and a marijuana addict. Here is a most tragic case.

Dr. Carroll: Yes. I remember. Just a young boy... under the influence of drugs... who killed his entire family with an axe.

Some very sick or injured people legitimately need opioids; doctors´ prescribing to this class is blameless. Are we going to complicate the availability of painkillers to them? My old house cleaner and her next door neighbor getting 300 Oxycontin pills per month--that´s drug abuse. Florida´s legislature moved against pill mills in 2010.

Predictably, heroin usage is up. Since heroin, a black market drug, comes in all different strengths when mixed with fentanyl and the like, there will be lethal overdoses that wouldn´t happen with a product that is pure, available, and of predictable strength. Addicts are going to get their fixes no matter what we do. As a libertarian on this issue, I say end the War on Drugs, which is petering out as Prohibition did.

Most of the population have no desire to take hard drugs and ruin their lives. That includes me and most everyone here.

My neighbors on both sides, both mid age managers in larger companies, smoked pot just about every weekend and sometimes in the evening. As an old Prison Guard, I am tuned to the smell of it. Both neighbors never once raised hell, went to the heavy stuff or robbed banks to feed their "habit". I smoked the stuff for a few years from in Vietnam and here in the states and never felt compelled to go to harder drugs. I don´t think I ever felt "out of control" or crazy. Just relaxed and mellow. I quit messing with it because I had a job that I could have lost if they knew I smoke it- I just didn´t smoke it anymore. No habit withdrawal at all. Stopping tobacco- now that was a fight.

Good point, #16.

Weed has been classified for decades as a Schedule I drug, defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Schedule I drugs include heroin, LSD, marijuana, ecstasy, methaqualone, and peyote.

It´s absurd to list weed in the same category as heroin. Research into its therapeutic potential has been prohibited by federal law, so I don´t know how it can be stated that it has no medical value.

Bush, penned a tweet over the weekend in which she echoed the widespread condemnation of the new directive from Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “I live in a border state,” Bush said. “I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart.” Quoting that tweet, Obama wrote that “sometimes truth transcends

Hillary Clinton weighed in Monday morning on the ongoing controversy regarding the Trump administration’s "no-tolerance” border policy, suggesting that Jesus would not condone the actions of the American border authorities. At an awards lunch for the Women’s Forum of New York, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee called out “those who selectively use the Bible” to give grounds for the separations, which were reported by the Department of Justice on Friday. “I went to a lot of years of Sunday school — even taught it from time to time. I’ve studied both the Old and New Testament, and what is being

Republican Senate candidate Mitt Romney called on the Trump administration Monday to stop separating immigrant families at the southern border, calling the controversy a “humanitarian crisis” that requires Congress to devise a permanent solution. Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, declined to blame President Trump or the Department of Homeland Security specifically in remarks to a group of voters at a park here. He called images of children separated from their parents “pretty disturbing” and “heartbreaking.” “I think immediately we should go back to the setting where we’re not ripping children away from their parents, and then we expect Congress to take

LANSING — The unprecedented outpouring of activism from students after the shooting at Marjorie Douglas Stoneman High School in Parkland, Fla., in February is the genesis for a bill introduced in the Legislature last week that would change the voting age in Michigan to 16. "We allow 16-year-olds to go off and get jobs and pay taxes, but we fail to allow them to exercise their voice come election time," said Sen. David Knezek, D-Dearborn Heights. "Young people are setting aside their differences and identifying issues they think need to change. And they can do everything to get that change

Michelle Obama traded workout clothes for a chic suit as she went out to lunch in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The former first lady looked perfectly chic for her business lunch as she dined at the Gjelina restaurant in Venice. Michelle swapped out her usual jewel tones with a softer palate of pastels for the meeting. She opted for light green wide-leg trousers and a suit jacket done in matching green and black stripes, topping the look off with a simple white shirt and sandals. The former first lady also shielded her face with an oversized pair of pastel pink sunglasses

Illegal Immigration: The latest outrage by the Trump administration is its policy of "ripping" children away from parents who´ve crossed the border illegally. As with so many other things involving Trump, there´s plenty of emotion but precious little in the way of facts. The furor reached critical mass after the Department of Homeland Security said on Friday that 1,995 children had been separated from their illegal border crossing parents from mid-April through May. That number included, DHS said, cases where the adults were arrested for illegal entry, immigration violations, or possible criminal conduct. The practice has generated a rising storm of protests,

Remember Anthony Weiner, also known as “Carlos Danger” — the former congressman who kept texting people pictures of well, umm, that part of his name? It all made quite the splash because he is married to Hillary Clinton’s consigliere and constant sidekick, Huma Abedin. Turns out that Anthony was such a perp — and so enthralled with his own — that he was sexting with a minor. That is a federal offense carrying up to 10 years in prison. So, he got raided by the New York Police Department and the New York office of the FBI. They seized his laptop computer.

FBI Director Wray has said nothing to reassure Americans that he understands the serious corruption highlighted in the IG report. The FBI´s cover-ups and stonewalling on Wray´s watch add to his credibility problems. Both in is his press conference after the IG report was released, and in his testimony Monday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Director Wray demonstrated he was more concerned about protecting the reputation of the institution of the FBI than about the astonishing corruption of top FBI officials detailed in the IG report. During today’s hearing we heard about FBI agents who aren’t corrupt and how the Clinton email

Starbucks shares fell as much as 3% in after-hours trading Tuesday after the coffeehouse chain provided a weak sales forecast for its upcoming quarter and said it would shutter 150 stores in fiscal 2019. The Seattle-based company said it would close underperforming stores in “densely penetrated markets” and slow its rate of store growth. Starbucks said it traditionally closes about 50 underperforming locations annually. Starbucks said it expects same-store sales to grow 1% in its third fiscal quarter of 2017. Analysts had expected same-store sales to grow 3% in that period. “While certain demand headwinds are transitory, and some of
