Toy retailer Toys R Us won U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval Tuesday to begin going-out of-business sales at about 170 of its stores across the country. Liquidation sales could begin as early as Wednesday, according to a plan that U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Keith Phillips approved at a hearing in Richmond, Va. The sales would be completed by April 15, according to the plan. (Snip) Reports of dismal sales during the crucial holiday 2017 period have industry observers and analysts predicting that the number of closed stores could double or triple as Toys R Us tries to come up with a reorganization

Comments:
I don´t see them surviving much longer. Sales are down sharply and they have billions of dollars in debt hanging over their heads.

Several magnitude 2 and 3 earthquakes rumbled through the San Francisco Bay Area on Friday. It´s the latest seismic activity to add to a swarm of 60 earthquakes greater than magnitude 1 to hit the Danville area in the past week. The largest in the sequence, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake, came at 12:19 p.m. Friday. The U.S. Geological Survey received reports from more than 1,000 people who said they felt the quake, extending from the East Bay and into San Francisco. The quake was quite shallow, less than a third of a mile under the surface of the earth.

WASHINGTON — The world-renown evangelist Billy Graham, who died Wednesday, will lie in honor at the U.S. Capitol next Wednesday and Thursday, with political leaders and the public allowed to pay their respects. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., announced the decision on Thursday. His office said that after Graham’s casket arrives on Feb. 28, Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., will take part in a bicameral service honoring the preacher and presidential counselor. Graham´s casket will remain in the Rotunda through March 1, the speaker´s office said. In a letter to Graham´s representatives, Ryan and McConnell said the

Former congresswoman and mass shooting survivor Gabby Giffords is calling out Florida Gov. Rick Scott over his inaction on gun violence and ties to the National Rifle Association a week after 17 people were killed in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Giffords rolled out an ad campaign against the governor on Tuesday, including what she called a "six-figure ad buy" to air a commercial targeting Scott. The 30-second ad opens with video from vigils for shooting victims in Florida, naming off "Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, [and] Parkland" in reference to the three mass shootings at Pulse nightclub in June 2016,

A coalition that includes a Latino membership organization and a former Massachusetts governor filed lawsuits on Wednesday challenging how four U.S. states allocate their Electoral College votes in presidential elections. The lawsuits were filed in federal courts in Massachusetts and California, states that went for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016, and South Carolina and Texas, where a majority of votes went to Republican U.S. President Donald Trump. Family and friends are not surprised that Jeanna Leslie offered a helping hand to a stranger. But they are shocked that the stranger, a man described as homeless, stabbed her to death with kitchen knives in a bloody attack in her own home, according to police. She had just moved to Denver from Texas a few months ago. Police found Leslie’s body in her downtown loft early on Valentine’s Day after she failed to pick up her children to go to a Nuggets game, the Denver Post reported. The 49-year-old mother of four had been stabbed multiple times. Blood was

Chris Hughes, a co-founder of Facebook and chair of the Economic Security Project, has a proposal to attack the problem of rising income inequality through a basic income, a system of wealth distribution in which people receive a standard salary just for being alive. And he wants to pay for it by raising taxes on the one percent. Russian bots aren´t pro-Republican or pro-Democrat: they´re simply anti-American. That´s the conclusion many are reaching in the wake of the indictments recently handed out by Special Counsel Robert Mueller against 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities who allegedly enacted a sophisticated plot to wage “information warfare” against the United States. Marat Mindiyarov, a former commenter at the Internet Research Agency, says the organization´s Facebook department hired people with excellent English skills to sway U.S. public opinion through an elaborate social media campaign. His own experience at the agency makes him trust the U.S. indictment, Mindiyarov told The Associated Press.

The death of liberalism constitutes the publishing world’s biggest mass funeral since the death of God half a century ago. Some authors, like conservative philosopher Patrick Deneen, of Why Liberalism Failed, have come to bury yesterday’s dogma. Others, like Edward Luce (The Retreat of Western Liberalism), Mark Lilla (The Once and Future Liberal), and Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt (How Democracies Die) come rather to praise. I’m in the latter group; the title-in-my-head of the book I’m now writing is What Was Liberalism. But perhaps, like God, liberalism has been buried prematurely. Maybe the question that we should be asking

1. It´s getting late: The recovery from the Great Recession is already one of the longest economic expansions in American history. And recently the economic cycle has gone from humming along to booming. Unemployment is down to a 17-year low, small business sentiment is roaring, and economic growth hit the 3% mark twice last year. But economic expansions don´t last forever. A recession comes along eventually and ruins the party. Wall Street is already pondering the demise of this recovery, which in May would become the second-longest in history. Most economists and investors believe the U.S. economy is either in

Asked in 1972 if he believed in miracles, Billy Graham answered: Yes, Jesus performed some and there are many "miracles around us today, including television and airplanes." Graham was no theologian. Neither was he a prophet. Jesus said "a prophet hath no honor in his own country." Prophets take adversarial stances toward their times, as did the 20th century´s two greatest religious leaders, Martin Luther King and Pope John Paul II. Graham did not. Partly for that reason, his country showered him with honors. So, the subtitle of Grant Wacker´s 2014 book "America´s Pastor: Billy Graham and the Shaping of a Nation"

For the past year, chief executives have often talked about the new sense of moral responsibility that corporations have to help their communities and confront social challenges even when Washington won’t. What if the finance industry — credit card companies like Visa, Mastercard and American Express; credit card processors like First Data; and banks like JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo — were to effectively set new rules for the sales of guns in America? Collectively, they have more leverage over the gun industry than any lawmaker. And it wouldn’t be hard for them to take a stand.

Adults who prostitute traumatized teenagers to advance their political agenda should be ashamed of themselves, and those at CNN who do it should be fired. A discussion among students at Oberlin High School in Oberlin, La., about a mathematical symbol led to a police investigation and a search of one of the student’s homes, according to the Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office. On the afternoon of Feb. 20, detectives investigated a report of terroristic threats at the school, where they learned that a student had been completing a math problem that required drawing the square-root sign. Students in the group began commenting that the symbol, which represents a number that when multiplied by itself equals another number, looked like a gun.

With high school students from Parkland in the Capitol this week advocating for gun control, the bill that would have allowed superintendents and principals to designate trained employees who can carry concealed weapons at school didn’t get heard as scheduled. That did not stop debate over the issue. In fact, it had a growing national audience, spurred on by President Donald Trump’s endorsement of the idea on Wednesday.
