America First: Trump Imposes
30% Tariff on Imported Solar

President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on imported solar cells on Monday in response to a trade case brought by U.S. solar manufacturers charging that cheap imports, particularly from China, were harming domestic solar companies. The United States trade representative, Robert Lighthizer, announced that the president had decided to impose the tariffs, accepting the recommendation of the administration’s trade advisors. The United States International Trade Commission, an independent body of trade experts, had engaged in “an exhaustive process” to examine the charges filed by American businesses and concluded that U.S. producers had been “seriously injured” by imports. “The President’s action

I certainly appreciate his American First policy. I don´t understand all of the ramifications of this or economic policies to make an intelligent comment as to whether is this positive or negative. I still question the government subsidies of the solar industry. Naturally Solyndra is the first thing I thought of. What a massive failure and waste of money that was that we never recouped.

The tariffs don’t get paid by the foreign manufacturers and importers, they get paid by the American people when they purchase these goods. This results in higher prices and the 30% gets passed on plus administrative fees to cover the costs of paying it to the government. It’s a very bad idea.

Is China subsidizing the steel used in a washer? Can US manufacturers compete if price was same as price sold in China? Did China rip off US washer technology? Is China price same as LG or Samsung from Korea? Access to the HUGE US market should not be free to ChiComs.

Solyndra was even worse than that, OP. Obama forced the taxpayer to compensate George Kaiser for his losses due to personal investment in Solyndra. Totally illegal, of course, but elite leftists always get special treatment.

Oh please, how often do buy a washing machine? 30% of the cost is probably very little . We don’t pay cost, we pay retail. I’m willing to pay a few extra $$ to keep The Jobs in the US.

The appliances we bought last year were assembled in the USA. Shouldn´t affect me unless the "with foreign-made components" clause is in the tariff. Still, not crazy about tariffs, human nature being what it is. (Think unions.)

Good. This will help US manufacturers of the competing goods. More good news, although it will increase the cost of solar panels and washing machines.

But, since I buy a washing machine about every 25 years, I am OK with this.

I saw a trending story about this on Facebook on Monday, from a so called *news* source I´ve never heard of. Their take was that President Trump is attacking the Solar Power Industry and that it´s going to cause it to collapse and we are going to run out of clean ways to produce power. All because of that meanie Donald Trump and his hatred of making clean energy and any and all things that are environmentally friendly. I chuckled after reading the first paragraph or so and closed the page. Figured it wasn´t at all as portrayed...and yep,it wasn´t. The problem with Facebook is their trending stories (which I have yet to find a way to hide from my timeline), are almost always like this. There are stories that attack Donald Trump every single day, I have NEVER seen a positive story on there about him or about any true conservative. Facebook labels most, if not all conservative sources as fake news, and many are blocked or identified as questionable when they show up on my news feed.If it wasn´t for the connection to dear family and friends I would walk away and not look back.

The Justice Department should not permit the president to be interrogated on so paltry and presumptuous a showing. I am assuming the authenticity of the questions that Special Counsel Robert Mueller reportedly wants to ask President Trump. The questions indicate that, after a year of his own investigation and two years of FBI investigation, the prosecutor lacks evidence of a crime. Yet he seeks to probe the chief executive’s motives and thought processes regarding exercises of presidential power that were lawful, regardless of one’s view of their wisdom.
