WASHINGTON -- Senate Republican leaders indicated today that they´re trying to forge a deal acceptable to the White House to save the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, but that they´re not quite sure what the president wants to see. Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) met today with Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). The same group of negotiators plans on sitting down again Thursday. "We all want to get to a solution here," Cornyn told reporters outside of a closed policy luncheon on Capitol Hill. "But the

I don´t want to see a ´modified´ DACA and I don´t want a bipartisan DACA bill. I want NO DACA and all of these people gone. They blather on and on about coming here in the past, but they seem to forget Ellis Island. Did no one watch any of the God Father movies? People used to stay outside the country for months and a lot were shipped back home. Get in line and maybe you´ll get in. Sneak over and I´m all for marching you back across the border with a boot in your backside.

Isn´t DACA just another way of saying amnesty? Isn´t it really a shell game contrivance - oh, we will get "the folks" to fall for this one, the "Dreamers" who through no fault of their own were brought here - or sent here -

but it won´t be just the 800,000 or so "Dreamers" will it? The "Dreamers" will then be able to make their parents legal and let´s say each "Dreamer" brings in 10 people, that´s 8 million people, if I have that right

DACA is basically another Obama subterfuge

What we´re getting from both congressional delegations is just posturing and stalling for time.

When you take it down to the bare wood the president´s position (DACA in exchange for several forms of REAL border security) and the Democrats´ ideological devotion to open borders and chain migration are mutually exclusive.

IMO it is not likely any deal will be reached. It´s going to be all about managing the political fallout. Fortunately we have a president who will not take the Democrat/Media BS lying down.

Dear Mrs. Elaine Chow-McConnell,

Please have your husband´s hearing tested. He cannot seem to listen or understand the words of his boss, the President--you know, that guy duly elected by the whole country, not just by the state of Kentucky. Even though OUR President has presented his guidelines for his upgrading and constitutionally sound ideas/goals/demands for this DACA bill, your husband doesn´t have enough hearing or brain cells to understand them. Perhaps you should encourage him to retire. Maybe it´s time for someone with 20/20 hearing to be the Senate majority leader. We´d appreciate your wifely concern for your husband at this point--it would benefit the whole country.

Sincerely...

The Stoneman Douglas High School shooting confirmed what many feared: every public event in America will now be politicized. The victims´ families had scarcely registered the tragic facts before the blame game got under way at full steam divided almost exactly along ideological lines. The liberal narrative was predictable. The NRA was a merchant of death; the benighted American was pathologically obsessed with military grade firearms, and it was time for the US to join the civilized world. The conservative talking points were equally familiar. They revolved around how liberals set up gun-free zones as kill boxes; how law

The downfall of Jacob Zuma as president of South Africa suggests that there might be a limit to tolerable corruption even in the most corrupt of polities; or perhaps it is merely the indiscretion of the corruption that makes it intolerable. The rule should be “steal what you like, but do not flaunt it.” I’m not surprised by the extremity of Zuma’s corruption: it is, rather, what I had expected more than 20 years ago. It was a pair of shoes that gave me a clue to the future. I had gone to South Africa in 1990, shortly after the unbanning

A bombshell that South Florida police ignored tips that a teenager was planning an assault on a school and then failed to stop him when he attacked seems destined to complicate the election-year discussion around mass shootings. Even in the face of a student-led gun-control protest that has captured the attention of the nation, Thursday´s admission that the Broward Sheriff´s Office repeatedly blew chances to prevent a teenager´s rampage in Parkland adds to the overwhelming evidence that the worst high school shooting in U.S. history happened in no small part due to law enforcement failures at every level. With high school students from Parkland in the Capitol this week advocating for gun control, the bill that would have allowed superintendents and principals to designate trained employees who can carry concealed weapons at school didn’t get heard as scheduled. Asked in 1972 if he believed in miracles, Billy Graham answered: Yes, Jesus performed some and there are many "miracles around us today, including television and airplanes." Graham was no theologian. Neither was he a prophet. Jesus said "a prophet hath no honor in his own country." Prophets take adversarial stances toward their times, as did the 20th century´s two greatest religious leaders, Martin Luther King and Pope John Paul II. Graham did not. For the past year, chief executives have often talked about the new sense of moral responsibility that corporations have to help their communities and confront social challenges even when Washington won’t. What if the finance industry — credit card companies like Visa, Mastercard and American Express; credit card processors like First Data; and banks like JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo — were to effectively set new rules for the sales of guns in America? Collectively, they have more leverage over the gun industry than any lawmaker. And it wouldn’t be hard for them to take a stand.
