Is deadly bacteria lurking in your
dishwasher? Scientists discover pathogens

Daily Mail [UK], by Alexandra Thompson

Deadly bacteria could be lurking in your dishwasher, new research reveals. The kitchen staple can contain everything from E.coli, which causes life-threatening food poisoning, to other pathogens linked to infections of the urinary tract, skin and inner heart lining, a Slovenian study found. Although usually harmless, these bacteria can be fatal in people with reduced immune systems, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or organ transplants. Bacteria and fungi are thought to enter dishwashers via the tap water that supplies them, as well as through contaminated food, the research adds. Researchers recommend people reduce their risk of infection by allowing

Comments:
To offset agricultural fertilizer runoff, EPA took the phosphates out of dishwashing and detergents, and now neither work properly. How about we stop growing corn to make ethanol and let us have clean dishes and clothes again, like a proper first-world nation?

We use Cascade. It contains hydrogen peroxide in the form of sodium percarbonate. Since hydrogen peroxide is a known antibacterial, I have no concerns that my dishes are contaminated. As far as the seals are concerned, they are outside the wash compartment. This is like taking a swab of the toilet seat and complaining that there is bacteria present.

I suspect that people aren´t cleaning their dishwashers periodically. The modern dishwasher is being sold under the guise of you don´t need to rinse your dishes, the machine takes care of that for you.

That leaves an opening for all kinds of lovely bacteria to grow in a dishwasher. Find a good dishwasher cleaning product and run a special cycle at least once a month. That should take care of the germs.

Come on. If you never clean your floor it will kill you. Read the directions. Buy a DW made in the last 12 years. Run your kitchen sink hot water tap till the water is too hot to keep your finger under. If your hot water never gets too hot to hold your hand under for more than a few seconds, you don´t really have hot water in your house.

Most DW will end a run with sterilized dishes and utensils, unlike washing by hand. The article should have said that careless hand washing will lead to death. That damp sponge and rag in the kitchen is a perfect incubator for nasty bacteria.

Japan accepted just 20 asylum seekers last year – despite a record 19,628 applications – drawing accusations that the country is unfairly closing its door on people in genuine need. Since 2010, Japan has granted work permits to asylum seekers with valid visas to work while their refugee claims were reviewed, a change the government says has fuelled a dramatic rise in “bogus” applications from people who are simply seeking work. Albany, N.Y. — New York state would make it illegal for police officers to have sex with people in their custody under a proposal gaining momentum in Albany. The idea picked up the support of Gov. Current law bars sex between correctional officers and inmates, but it doesn’t apply to police and people in their custody. Cuomo, a Democrat, called that omission an “egregious loophole” that must be closed.

The IRS is still paying bonuses to nearly 2,000 bad employees, including more than two dozen who were actual tax-cheats themselves, the agency’s inspector general said in a new report this week. The Senate’s new immigration compromise not only grants legal status to illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. before, but creates a new future amnesty that would even protect illegal immigrants who managed to sneak into the U.S. over the next four months, experts said. Not only would the bill enshrine Obama-era deportation rules, protecting most of the current 11 million illegal immigrants from fear of removal, but it extends those same protections to any illegal immigrants who can jump the border between now and June 30. The Homeland Security Department said the plan “destroys” their ability to enforce immigration
