Flu patients leave Texas hospitals strapped
Texas Tribune [Austin, TX], by Sydney Greene

Big-city hospitals in Texas have been overwhelmed this week by an influx of flu patients, and state health officials say influenza activity is widespread across the state. At Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, waiting rooms turned into exam areas as a medical tent was built in order to deal with the surge of patients. A Houston doctor said local hospital beds were at capacity, telling flu sufferers they might be better off staying at home. Austin´s emergency rooms have also seen an influx of flu patients. (Snip) On Monday alone, Parkland´s emergency department had seen 930 patients — double what the hospital

We have had 28 deaths reported as of yesterday in the DFW area here. It´s like suddenly hearing of West Nile Virus deaths suddenly in my "neighborhood" and warnings about breeding grounds for these mosquitoes.

Our physician´s office phoned to cancel my spouse´s appointment for a physical because the flu took out the staff and the doctors. It´s bad out there. We will not be going to Church for at least the next two Sundays here on the west coast of lower FL.

This flu is bad. The elderly and ´immune compromised´ need to be very careful.
This flu was the sickest my wife has been in a long, long time. Be careful.

Supreme Court justices to weigh in on
Trump’s powers with travel ban case
Washington Times, by Stephen Dinan    Original Article

What the Supreme Court does with President Trump’s travel ban case, which reaches the justices this week, is likely to determine whether courts across the country give him the usual deference due a president and allow him leeway to pursue his immigration crackdown — or whether they join the anti-Trump resistance determined to thwart him at every turn. From battles in California, Illinois and Pennsylvania over sanctuary cities, to illegal immigrant teens gaining abortion rights, to the border wall, to Mr. Trump’s attempts to limit some paths to legal immigration and to cancel the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

[AFP News] Mariëtte Le Roux AFP News23 April 2018 Scientists found the link between PMS and alcohol ´more pronounced´ if women drank heavily Researchers reported a link Monday between PMS and drinking alcohol, but could not conclude whether premenstrual suffering causes women to hit the bottle, or the other way round. A trawl of data from 19 studies in eight countries found a "moderate association" between premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms such as cramps, breast tenderness, fatigue, moodiness, and depression on the one hand, and a tipple on (in) the other.

Alek Minassian, 25, has been identified as the person arrested on suspicion of driving a white Ryder van into a crowd of pedestrians in Toronto, killing multiple people. Witnesses said the driver was traveling fast when he jumped a curb and hit “everything in his path.” When police arrested him after he fled the scene, he approached them with what appeared to be a gun in his hand. The motive in the crash is not yet known, but early reports indicate the driver hit the pedestrians deliberately. During a press conference this evening, the Toronto Police chief spelled the suspect’s name as “Alex Minassian.” But the Toronto Police quickly

(Video) - Outside the kitchen door at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Center in Brunei, on a number of trees near the balcony, there is a nest of very special ants. They explode. This colony was studied in depth by scientists who, last week in the journal ZooKeys, published an in-depth description of the newly named species, called Colobopsis explodens, including a portion of their genome sequence. Workers of C. explodens have a distinctive, rather foul talent. When their nest is invaded, they rupture their own abdomens, releasing a sticky, bright yellow fluid laced with toxins on their attackers. Similar to honey bees that die after stinging,

There is an epic battle for the soul, cooperation and testimony of Donald Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, whose office was recently searched by federal authorities. Prosecutors are almost certainly trying to flip him, that is, turn him against his client and into a cooperating government witness. The president’s lawyers certainly would prefer him to remain loyal to his client, either by testifying in his favor or invoking his Fifth Amendment privilege to remain silent. Each side has powerful weapons. Prosecutors can threaten him with double-digit prison sentences, while President Trump has the constitutional power to pardon him,

This is big news, provided that account is borne out by a subsequent criminal indictment and successful prosecution. It was, almost without question, the low point of Andrew M. Cuomo’s political career. The year was 2002 and Mr. Cuomo was badly trailing in the Democratic primary for governor and desperately seeking a graceful exit. He needed a loyal lieutenant, someone to help him salvage his future and negotiate the delicate terms of political surrender. Mr. Cuomo turned to a trusted former colleague: Bill de Blasio. And so, in a weekend of secret shuttle diplomacy, Mr. de Blasio, then a junior New York City councilman, did just that. Along with a cast that included President Bill Clinton, Mr. de Blasio was an indispensable emissary as Mr. Cuomo

It's from election night, when Chozick writes in Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns, and One Intact Glass Ceiling that it finally became clear somebody had to break the news to Clinton that she was going to lose to Donald Trump. The task fell to "Robby Mook, the drained and deflated campaign manager," per an excerpt in the Times. And when he finally did so, Clinton "didn't seem all that surprised," writes Chozick. The president who delights in bigness — of his buildings, his crowd sizes, his hands — is opting for a slimmed-down affair when he hosts French President Emmanuel Macron for his first state dinner on Tuesday. GOP control of the Senate is narrow, and with the upcoming Senate races, the power balance could tip in favor of Democrat, pro-abortion advocates. Planned Parenthood knows this, of course, and will be pouring a reported $30 million into abortion advocacy through its political arm. This money will be spent on Senate and gubernatorial races in a number of states, including Arizona, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, and will be used to fund TV and digital ads, direct-mail campaigns, and even advocacy in the public square.
