Tonya Harding is no hero
New York Post, by Maureen Callahan

Original Article

It’s hard to recall a second act in American life like Tonya Harding’s. She doesn’t deserve it. As recently as 2014 — the 20th anniversary of her Olympic rival Nancy Kerrigan’s kneecapping, carried out by Harding’s ex-husband and associates — the disgraced skater told TV Guide, “Whatever. It’s like, I’m done. Nobody wants to hear this crap anymore.” Fast-forward nearly four years, and this scandal has been retold — marketed, untruthfully, as a “true story” — in the Oscar-gunning film “I, Tonya.” Last Sunday, Harding was seated prominently at the Golden Globes, thanked by winner Allison Janney — who portrayed Harding’s mother LaVona

This is a little complicated. Yes, and most importantly, Tonya Harding was guilty, period. She was also abused, from a dirt poor family, her mother totally used her, her husband was just as awful, and awful in the same way. But somehow, Tonya Harding became one of the greatest female figure skaters America has ever produced. Or at least that´s what Dick Button (remember him?) said during the months long investigation following the attack on Nancy Kerrigan. A neighbor who was a competitive figure skater mentioned and agreed with Button´s opinion, something about edges and the Tripe Axle. And somehow, at least it´s a story worth telling, not glamorizing, but telling.

I have new respect for Johnny Weir: “I am so over the glamorization of a villain simply because she was born on the ‘wrong side of the tracks.’ While her upbringing may have been tragic, athletes come from all walks of life and succeed based on merit, not assault. I won’t applaud her and I stand for Nancy.”

The other victim here is Michelle Kwan. She was the alternate who would have replaced Harding if the Multnomah County DA would have had the guts to do his job and not let her lawyer bluff him. Because after the Olympics were over, he sure did his job surprisingly fast. So you knew the evidence was there. He was just spineless.

She was the biggest embarrassment I have ever witnessed at the Olympics. EVER Saw a photo of her with the article, and she looks so hard. Not a drop of class or graciousness in her soul.

#7 - All the athletic abilities and skill in the world means nothing if it is not backed up by character. No matter how poor you are that´s something that doesn´t cost a damn dime! Plenty of people have grown up dirt poor with character and morals. That´s not an excuse.

I was invited by friends to attend the performance one day after the attack, in Detroit. So I got to see Miss Tonya in person. She was awful. Took her at least 10 minutes to start her routine - the lights weren´t right, the laces on her skates weren[t right, I don´t remember how many false starts she made, but she was not impressive. I think she also fell at least once. It was very weird because we didn´t yet know her role in the attack.

At the same time, one of the friends who had invited me was from a fairly prominent Boston family and she had no love at all for Nancy Kerrigan, who had earned a reputation as a not so nice prima donna.

Still, I love watching figure skating competitions and performances. And wish I could go back to childhood and take skating lessons and learn to fly across the ice as the true athletes do.

I barely recall the incident during the scandals, but I do recall something of it as it was played out in the news, sport news and endless TV dramas.

The one thing I cannot reconcile is that figure skating is an extremely expensive athletic sport from the skates, costuming, cosmetics, hair, rink time, traveling, relocating, coaching, choreography and music, to name a few. How on earth can two supposedly "blue collar" families afford childhood skaters from a very young age to Olympic level? And do not state sponsorship as figure skating is as about lucrative in the sponsorship world as bob sledding, other than a Wheaties cereal box cover.

The poster above who says it´s complicated is right. It´s easy to say character doesn´t cost anything, but abuse can have devastating effects on a person, robbing them of even the chance to develop that character. it doesn´t change the facts, but some sort of thinking has to go into how you formulate your opinion of a person who has been abused, and then did bad things.

She will never be "normal." That is tragic. Also, everybody deserves a shot at redemption and forgiveness. She may not have earned it yet, but everybody deserves the chance.

Last week the Trump administration announced it will allow states to impose a “community engagement” requirement on healthy adults getting Medicaid, the public health insurance program for lower income people. So far, ten states intend to do it, though not welfare-haven New York. To get Medicaid, adults in these states will have to work or look for a job, study for a high school diploma, learn English as a second language, volunteer, get addiction treatment, or take care of a family member. In short, do something. Democrats and the liberal media call the requirement “cruel” and “pathological.” Baloney. There’s no

The New York Times dragged out a sanitized version of Hillary Clinton once again, in a lament that she had to expire politically to create an uprising. But people who want to see women advancing in politics should be glad that she lost. Clinton was not a role model, as her model wasn’t available to anyone who hadn’t married a president. A bad politician, she was dependent upon him, and when he turned out to be a chronic seducer and even abuser of women, she was willing to threaten and even destroy his victims to assure his success. The Oprah-for-president endorsements began rolling in even before Oprah Winfrey had finished her rousing Golden Globes speech. Hollywood Democrats loved the idea (Meryl Streep: “I want her to run”). Elected Democrats cheered (Congresswoman Jackie Speier: “Run, Oprah, run!”). Campaign operative Democrats swooned (“Call me,” tweeted the Iowa state director of Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election effort). One key group, however, isn’t buying the hype: actual democratic Democrats, the mostly young, grassroots insurgents who propelled Bernie Sanders in his surprisingly strong 2016 primary bid. This just in from what was once the best state in the Union: Guess which state has the highest poverty rate in the country? Not Mississippi, New Mexico, or West Virginia, but California, where nearly one out of five residents is poor. That’s according to the Census Bureau’s Supplemental Poverty Measure, which factors in the cost of housing, food, utilities and clothing, and which includes noncash government assistance as a form of income.
