Investigation reveals MS-13’s
sophisticated power structure

Transnational street gang MS-13 has better organizational structure than some corporations. As part of an investigation into the violent group’s illicit activities on Long Island, authorities identified “cliques” — or local cells — of MS-13 operating in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and Texas. “Cliques are sub-groups of MS-13,” officials said in a press release announcing the indictment of a dozen high-ranking MS-13 members on Thursday. “All cliques are MS-13 gang members, and each clique operates individually under their own rules, yet is still under the greater rules of the entire organization.” The gang demands that cliques “respect each other and their territories,”

I don’t believe habeas corpus applies to a terrorist organization. Round them up, lock them up, deport.

I suppose a more sophisticated power structure is possible when you don´t obey the law. An occasional murder and a bunch of dope-addicted clients really helps!

Comey´s book tour is a colossal mistake

Announcements of scheduled appearances for the widely anticipated $850-to-attend book tour by fired FBI Director James Comey foreshadow a much-ballyhooed return to the public square. Media outlets eagerly booked the former director, and his opus, “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership,” briefly jumped to No. 1 on Amazon’s best-seller list. But should Comey — a central witness in special counsel Robert Mueller probe — be making public his version of events which will certainly differ significantly with what President Trump, the central target in the special prosecutor’s probe, has repeatedly stated? Comey was humiliatingly removed by the president last May and

Californians have always lived with the fear that a really big rumble along the San Andreas fault, and there goes Hollywood’s tinsel, San Francisco’s templed hills and the wild northern California coast, sliding headlong into the Pacific. Once mocked as the denizens of the land of fruit and nuts, Californians have nevertheless seemed to enjoy more of everything. The rest of the country celebrates only four seasons — winter, spring, summer and autumn — but California has four more: Wildfires, mudslides, earthquakes and riots. California has suffered Brown-outs with two governors, father and son, and other spendthrift administrations have spread profligacy and

Media hostility to President Trump has been unremitting since he secured the Republican nomination. It didn’t stop, or even slow down, with his inauguration. The many achievements of his young administration haven’t given the press pause, either: his coverage continues to be just about 100% negative. What, then, to make of the fact that Rasmussen Reports, which conducts the only daily presidential approval poll of likely voters, finds Trump at 50% approval and 49% disapproval? Those are better numbers than Barack Obama had in the same survey at the same point in his administration, and the press boosted Obama almost as

Saturday, March 31, would have been Cesar Chavez’s 91st birthday. Given Chavez’s consistent commitment to strict border enforcement to help poor Americans improve their condition, it is a fitting date for National Border Control Day. I’ve been making the case for such an observance for a while now (see here and here, for instance), but this year it’s started to gain some traction. Most notably, a resolution to that effect has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R., Texas). The resolution (H. Res. 791) concludes this way: Whereas Cesar Chavez devoted his professional life to ensuring

Shrouded in secrecy, hidden in an armored train, Kim Jong Un left North Korea for the first time since taking over its hereditary dictatorship, summoned to Beijing for talks with Chinese president-for-life Xi Jinping. Their three-day meetings began on March 25. Kim had obviously been ordered to Beijing to receive instructions on what he should and shouldn’t do in his coming meeting with President Trump, still supposedly to be scheduled in the next month. The Kim-Xi meetings came at a time when, as reported by the Financial Times on the basis of Chinese “official data,” China had virtually cut off North Korea’s

The suburban house is the idealization of the immigrant’s dream—the vassal’s dream of his own castle. Europeans who come here are delighted by our suburbs. Not to live in an apartment! It is a universal aspiration to own your own home. —Los Angeles urbanist Edgardo Contini For the better part of the past century, the American dream was defined, in large part, by that “universal aspiration” to own a home. As housing prices continue to outstrip household income, that’s changing as more and more younger Americans are ending up landless, and not by choice. The share of homeownership has dropped most rapidly

The new revelations raise new questions on whether the incident was deliberate. Tax reform may not be generating the drumbeat of positive headlines that it once was, but the progress and successes it has created continue to pile up. Walgreens has affirmed a $100 million investment in raising employees´ wages thanks to the GOP-passed law, as McDonald´s unveils new education benefits, also to the tune of nine figures, for its workers. Meanwhile, House Speaker Paul Ryan is touting the decision of a smaller Maryland-based company that he visited last fall to offer tax reform bonuses of up to $1,000. The death this week of 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Stephen Reinhardt gives President Trump the opportunity to boost the number of Republican-appointed judges on the famously liberal-leaning court, with seven seats now open. But legal experts say filling all of those vacancies could be a stretch because of partisan wrangling in the Senate. Of the 22 active judges on the bench — the court is authorized to have 29 judgeships — 16 were nominated by Democratic presidents, and six were nominated by Republicans. But with Reinhardt’s death, Trump will have the opportunity to fill seven vacancies to the San Francisco-based

Who developed Novichok? Western and former Soviet scientists say the nerve agent was created in a Soviet lab in the 1970s in what is now Uzbekistan. During the Cold War, the U.S. and the Soviets ran secret chemical and biological weapons programs, experimenting with the deadly pathogens that cause diseases like anthrax, smallpox, and plague. Russia denies it ever made advanced nerve agents, but when Soviet chemist Vil Mirzayanov fled to the U.S. in the 1990s, he revealed the existence of Novichok, its chemical makeup, and details of its production, saying the Soviets had stockpiled enough to kill several hundred thousand

South African anti-apartheid campaigner Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has died aged 81, her personal assistant says. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was the former wife of South Africa´s first black president, Nelson Mandela. The couple - famously pictured hand-in-hand as Mr Mandela walked free from prison after 27 years - were a symbol of the anti-apartheid struggle for nearly three decades. However, in later years her reputation became tainted legally and politically. Family spokesman Victor Dlamini said Mrs Mandela "succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones"

With the U.S. Census Bureau reporting yet another year of population loss for the city, it doesn’t take an investigator to determine the causes. The city’s scary record of 343 homicides in 2017 affirms the city’s well-known reputation as a dangerous place to live. Even if 2018 has fewer homicides, it doesn’t take a fortune teller to predict that this year’s homicide rate will be high. Until the city substantially reduces its homicide and other crimes rates, people will continue to view the city as dangerous and be reluctant to stay or move here.
