House Extends Surveillance Law,
Rejecting New Privacy Safeguards

New York Times, by Charlie Savage, Eileen Sullivan*

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 1/12/2018 2:04:39 AM

Washington - The House of Representatives voted on Thursday to extend the National Security Agency’s warrantless surveillance program for six years with minimal changes, rejecting a push by a bipartisan group of lawmakers to impose significant privacy limits when it sweeps up Americans’ emails and other personal communications. The vote, 256 to 164, centered on an expiring law that permits the government, without a warrant, to collect communications from United States companies like Google and AT&T of foreigners abroad — even when those targets are talking to Americans. Congress had enacted the law in 2008

Comments:
* [w/ Nicholas Fandos.]

The problem warrantless surveillance program, but rather the misuse of it for political purposes as we are no seeing with President Trump before and after his elect. And, the illegal "unmasking" done by individuals that seem to have no real quick criminal arrest consequences. The loopholes built into this program show that our intelligence agencies are not concerned about the security of our United States, both domestically and abroad when dealing with our citizens.

San Francisco - Young immigrants who enlisted in the military after receiving temporary legal status will not be deported, Secretary of Defence James Mattis has said. So-called Dreamers — immigrants who are in America illegally after coming to the country as children — are at the nexus of a political fight over immigration after Donald Trump suspended a programme offering them work permits and a reprieve from deportation. Hundreds of thousands of Dreamers who secured status from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative are in a state of anxious limbo, waiting to see if Congress will renew the

Portland, OR - On July 20, a Hong Kong-flagged cargo ship departed Charleston, South Carolina, carrying thousands of containers. One of them held a lucrative commodity: body parts from dozens of dead Americans. According to the manifest, the shipment bound for Europe included about 6,000 pounds of human remains valued at $67,204. To keep the merchandise from spoiling, the container’s temperature was set to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. The body parts came from a Portland business called MedCure Inc. A so-called body broker, MedCure profits by dissecting the bodies of altruistic donors and sending the parts to medical

The North Korean Cheer Squad

Winter Olympics fashion has, largely, been a tale of two events: the opening and closing ceremonies, where national costume comes out to play; and figure skating, where the aesthetic swings and swoops from Vegas-on-ice to Vera Wang, with a touch of Broadway and Diaghilev thrown in. As of this week, however, a new factor was added to the mix: the North Korean cheerleading squad. Approximately 230 young women strong, the squad arrived for the Pyeongchang Games in matching red wool coats, buttoned at the waist, with black fur trim at the neck and wrists and matching black caps, high-heeled ankle boots and sheer

The British territory of Bermuda has become the first jurisdiction to roll back same-sex marriage, less than one year after the unions were legalized by the socially conservative island’s supreme court. Governor John Rankin signed the Domestic Partnership Act into law Wednesday reversing the rights of same-sex partners to wed. The legislation allows any couple to enter into a domestic partnership and gives same-sex couples similar rights to those enjoyed by opposite-sex couples. But such partnerships will not be legally recognized as “marriage.” “The Act is intended to strike a fair balance between two irreconcilable groups in

Congress reaches spending deal
Washington Times, by Stephen Dinan    Original Article
Posted By: LittleHoodedMonk- 2/7/2018 12:49:18     Post Reply
Congressional leaders appeared to have reached a two-year spending deal Wednesday that would boost the budget by nearly $300 billion over the next two years, with the Pentagon’s budget rising $80 billion and domestic spending by $63 billion in 2018 alone. White House legislative chief Marc Short told reporters he expected Senate leaders to announce the deal later in the day. The numbers had been the sticking point as lawmakers went through last month’s shutdown showdown. Republicans wanted a major military increase, and Democrats had insisted that must be matched dollar-for-dollar with domestic spending.

It´s been eight years since U.S. nuclear posture was last reviewed, and in that time, U.S. adversaries have drastically ramped up their nuclear capabilites. The Trump administration paints a dreary picture of the nuclear landscape in their Nuclear Posture Review, one in which Russia and China are modernizing their nuclear arsenals, while North Korea and Iran continue to pose a newer threat. Meanwhile, the U.S. has been aiming to reduce nuclear stockpiles, according to administration officials, possibly putting the country and its allies in a risky position. "Over the past decade, while the U.S. has led the world in these reductions,

The EU request said Germany was a major exporter and cited WTO rules under which it could demand compensation. The House voted Tuesday to prohibit sexual relationships between lawmakers and their employees, a remarkable rule change that brings the institution in line with the military and the private sector after a rash of sexual harassment and misconduct allegations roiled Capitol Hill. The prohibition, pushed by Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., took immediate effect as Congress moved toward changing the system for reporting and adjudicating employees´ claims of sexual harassment. The House approved language Tuesday establishing an office to advocate for employees during that process and a separate bill requiring lawmakers to reimburse taxpayers when they are involved in workplace settlements.

Trump’s ‘marching orders’ to the Pentagon:

President Trump’s vision of soldiers marching and tanks rolling down the boulevards of Washington is moving closer to reality in the Pentagon and White House, where officials say they have begun to plan a grand military parade later this year showcasing the might of America’s armed forces. Trump has long mused publicly and privately about wanting such a parade, but a Jan. 18 meeting between Trump and top generals in the Pentagon’s tank — a room reserved for top-secret discussions — marked a tipping point, according to two officials briefed on the planning. We’re mad about happiness. A seemingly endless tide of books and videos, blogs and classes overflow with advice on where to find happiness and how to achieve it. The tide leaves us in its wake, more anxious and worried than ever, wondering what is wrong with us whenever we’re not happy. The Declaration of Independence guarantees the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and Americans pursue the last one with the greatest vigor. Right behind them, in close pursuit, come social scientists and psychologists trying to figure out who’s happiest and why. Their research consistently finds more happy conservatives than liberals.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions thinks marijuana may be a gateway to prescription opioid and heroin addiction. In fact, a number of academic studies show lower rates of opioid abuse and overdoses in states that have legalized medical marijuana. Speaking at a Heritage Foundation event last night in honor of the late Ronald Reagan´s birthday, Sessions lamented the "permissive rhetoric" and media coverage surrounding marijuana and other drugs. "We don´t think illegal drug use is ´recreation.´ Lax enforcement, permissive rhetoric and the media have undermined the essential need to say no to drug use. Don´t start," Sessions said.
