House Extends Surveillance Law,
Rejecting New Privacy Safeguards

New York Times, by Charlie Savage, Eileen Sullivan*

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 1/12/2018 2:04:39 AM

Washington - The House of Representatives voted on Thursday to extend the National Security Agency’s warrantless surveillance program for six years with minimal changes, rejecting a push by a bipartisan group of lawmakers to impose significant privacy limits when it sweeps up Americans’ emails and other personal communications. The vote, 256 to 164, centered on an expiring law that permits the government, without a warrant, to collect communications from United States companies like Google and AT&T of foreigners abroad — even when those targets are talking to Americans. Congress had enacted the law in 2008

Comments:
* [w/ Nicholas Fandos.]

The problem warrantless surveillance program, but rather the misuse of it for political purposes as we are no seeing with President Trump before and after his elect. And, the illegal "unmasking" done by individuals that seem to have no real quick criminal arrest consequences. The loopholes built into this program show that our intelligence agencies are not concerned about the security of our United States, both domestically and abroad when dealing with our citizens.

Toronto - Canada wants to change a bilateral agreement to allow it to turn back thousands of asylum seekers walking across the border but the United States is not cooperating, according to a Canadian official with knowledge of the discussions. Under the Safe Third Country Agreement, or STCA, asylum seekers who arrive at a formal Canada-U.S. border crossing going in either direction are turned back and told to apply for asylum in the first country they arrived in. Canada wants the agreement rewritten to apply to the entire border. More than 26,000 people have illegally crossed the Canada-U.S. border to file refugee claims in the past

I have argued many times on these pages, and elsewhere, that the shale oil and gas revolution is the story of the decade. Since 2007 U.S. oil and gas output has risen by about 75 percent and the renaissance is still in its infancy stages. (Snip) The Energy Information Administration reports that the U.S. could surpass Saudi Arabia in oil and gas by the end of the year. With massive oil and gas shale reserves, we could be No. 1 in the world before the end of the decade. The Wall Street Journal confirms that U.S. output is “expected to surpass Saudi Arabia by the end of the year” and we will rival Russia for No. 1 in the world.

Kandahar, Afghanistan - Afghan farmers are busy in their poppy fields as the annual opium harvest begins, underscoring the government’s failure to stamp out a crop that yields much of the world’s supply of heroin. Aided by corrupt bureaucrats, smugglers and Taliban fighters, the farmers help maintain an annual supply of about 9,000 metric tons to international markets, producing bumper crops despite government efforts to deter cultivation. “We don’t get enough money if we grow wheat or other crops,” said Mohammad Nadir, 35, as he gathered the crop he planted last year on two acres of land in the southern province of

The vaunted “echo chamber” that President Barack Obama’s aide Ben Rhodes created to sell the Iran deal was quiet on Monday, in the aftermath of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s revelations of new intelligence proving that Iran had lied to the world about its nuclear weapons program. Netanyahu presented a trove of over 100,000 files, both paper and electronic, that he said Israel had obtained from a “vault” where Iran had stored an archive of its nuclear research. The files included diagrams of nuclear detonation devices, nuclear warhead designs, and plans for nuclear testing sites, among other incriminating information.
