Rudolf Flesch, in his 1955 book, noted that "things have changed in the last 10, 20 years. For the first time in history, American parents see their children getting less education than they got themselves. Their sons and daughters come home from school and they can´t read the newspaper; they can´t spell simple words like February or Wednesday; they don´t know the difference between Austria and Australia. The fathers and mothers don´t know the reason for this, but they know that something terrible has happened to their most precious dreams and aspirations[.]" Isn´t it beautiful – the way Flesch perceives
I am a bookworm. I have been since I taught myself to read at age 4 by reading the daily newspaper, according to my mother. I remember clearly the phonics lessons to get the words correct.
However, I also know several people from when I was in college who could read but didn´t, who hated to read and for whom reading was an absolute chore. They didn´t lack intelligence, but they were taught to read by sight words, so their pleasure in the printed word had been stunted from the get go.
IMHO, whomever began this "whole word" krap is doubly evil - first, for dumbing down the students of tomorrow through reading comprehension, but most of all, for destroying the simple pleasure of losing oneself in between the covers of a favorite and much loved book!!!
I too....was thrown out of several institutions of ´higher learning´ for my un-willingness to shut up about my conservative political POV.
Since the Magna Carta...there has only been one struggle...one issue....one fight...and it is the fight between the King and the commoners.
Effing Leftists, in their madness, promote the power of the King (Government) against the rights of the commoners (the people) and they use every deception imaginable to seduce good people into thinking that they "Care" more about the common man than do those who promote Liberty.
"Liberty" even today is charged with being dangerous, perilous....risky.
Where is the breathless reportage on Venezuela ?
The "Upper Class" is (are) Democrats !
They seek to preserve their power.
Dumbing down your children was no accident...no failure.
The side benefit to the Left is that without knowing words, understanding their meaning, a person can say a word means anything. Hillary Clinton once said "Diversity id Unity". Her husband argued on the meaning of "is". Small examples of the larger problem.
I can tell K-12 is destroying America, the writer doesn´t know we are a REPUBLIC not a Democracy!! The difference- In a democracy your neighbors can vote to have you move and you have to. In a Republic, your neighbor can vote all day long to have your move and you tell them to pound sand because you have rights to your individual rights!
Surprise yourself. You may very well find out that you can.
But if you *really* can´t, then at least make sure your kids know how to read before hitting the first grade classroom. There are lots of resources out there to help you: "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" is just one of many good places to start. Depriving a little child of essential phonetic reading instruction is akin to depriving him of food. I can´t over-emphasize how important this is.
My mother warned me as a very young boy about this fake reading method. She taught me and my siblings to read before we ever got to school, and she used phonics. Phonics is the basis for lifelong power and comfort and love of reading. I read the newspaper with my breakfast since age 5, and have always loved reading.
This whole sight reading lie is a horror, and probably is an intentional move to make people more ignorant and more pliable for the government masters. Remember Horowitz´s parents came here from Russia with the lifelong mission to work as teachers to destroy America within for their Soviet masters. This operation has been going on since the 1930s. Bill Ayers, after his failed terrorist revolution, went into education, again to harm America.
Home schooling is the only way out. Keep your children from the government schools.
As most readers are aware the current wagon-circling Clinton defense strategy (to avoid the toxic legal ebola present through the Christopher Steele dossier contagion) is to claim Team Clinton was duped by a Russian disinformation campaign. This approach attempts to create distance between: Clinton and Fusion-GPS; the intensely false political intelligence assertions within the Steele Dossier; the DOJ/FBI using the dossier as underlying evidence to gain FISA approval; and the outcome of the FBI spying operation on the Trump campaign in 2016.Unfortunately for them, as we have pointed out, Hillary Clinton -writ large- cannot say they were duped by an intelligence
A California couple was arrested after police found their 13 children starved and shackled to their beds. The children were kept captive by their parents in filthy conditions. Several of the children are adults. The victims are age 2 to 29. When the police met with one of the girls who escaped the home she looked to be 10, though she was 17. (Video) The couple has a Facebook page — Their names are David and Louise Turpin. The Facebook page is an ABSOLUTE FREAKSHOW. David and Louise had a wedding ceremony in 2016. The only people invited were their
On Monday’s broadcast of CBS’ “Late Show,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) stated that President Trump can begin to prove he’s not racist or bigoted by supporting the bipartisan immigration compromise. Schumer said Trump’s comments “over and over and over again can be described as nothing but racist and obnoxious. He says he’s not a racist. Well, … I have a challenge for Donald Trump. Okay, actions speak louder than words, if you want to begin, just begin that long road back to proving you’re not a racist, you’re not bigoted, support the bipartisan compromise that three Republicans and
The first year of the Trump administration was as turbulent for the news media as it was for politics, with many journalists dropping any pretense of professionalism to become strident opponents of the President. As a proxy for the larger establishment media, the Media Research Center analyzed every moment of coverage of President Trump last year on the ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts, usually seen by more than 25 million people each night. The major findings: The Trump presidency was the biggest story of the year, accounting for one out of every three minutes of evening news airtime —
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders defended President Trump on Tuesday against claims that he is racist, suggesting that NBC would never have given him a starring roll on "The Apprentice" if he harbored racial animus toward minority groups or immigrants. "Frankly, if the critics of the president were who he said he was, why did NBC give him a show for a decade on TV?" Sanders said to reporters, a day after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., suggested Trump could prove he is not racist by endorsing a clean bill that grants permanent legal status to some 800,000
Since the election of President Trump, we have witnessed a series of rulings by Clinton- and Obama-appointed federal judges to block executive orders (E.O.) related to immigration. In each case, the current system has allowed a single unelected judge to block the actions of a duly elected president who has attempted to exercise the authority conferred upon him by the Constitution and the voters. Such judicial tyranny cannot be tolerated. The only court created by the founders of the Constitution is the Supreme Court (SCOTUS), with all other federal courts established by Congress and administered by the Judicial Branch of government.
The mainstream media´s coverage of President Donald Trump is unprecedented in its lack of fairness and its constant negativity. It represents the ultimate weaponization of big reporting that´s in sync with efforts by the shadow government to mobilize the national security apparatus and the other entrenched Deep State bureaucracies for the purpose of weakening and ultimately taking down the 45th president of the United States. As bad and biased as the reporting is today, it really is nothing new – just more of the same, only much worse. It´s become fake news on steroids. (Graph) Notwithstanding the orders from on
The sign at Costco explaining the jacked up price of a case of Gatorade has gone viral. (Photo/Tweet) On January 1, Seattle had several new progressive laws go into effect. Along with mandatory paid sick leave, mandates for employers to post work schedules 14 days in advance, and severe restrictions on short-term rental platforms (Airbnb, VRBO, etc.), Seattle imposed a massive new soda tax — 1.75 cents per OUNCE on sugary drinks. In response, at least one major retailer advertised in detail the reason for the significant increase in prices. Costco, famous for selling products in bulk quantities, faces especially stiff
CNN’s Chris Cuomo referred to an Indian-American in the Trump administration in a racially insensitive way on Monday because he could not pronounce his last name. During a discussion about the fallout from Trump’s supposed “s***hole” remark, Cuomo referred to White House aide Raj Shah as Raj “whatever his name is.” “We went to the White House when it happened, and Raj whatever his name is didn´t back off the words,” Cuomo said. WATCH: (Video) The Washington Free Beacon pointed out that this not the first time that CNN has botched correctly identifying Shah. In December, they published a graphic during
In the contest for Most Offended News Network after President Trump reportedly referred to African nations as “s***hole” countries, CNN wins hands down. NewsBusters staff combed through CNN transcripts on Nexis for the S-hole word in the 24 hours of January 12 – the first full day after The Washington Post reported the controversy – and found CNN staffers and CNN guests uncorked the profanity 195 times in one day. That doesn´t count Saturday, Sunday or Monday. They could be headed for 1,000 by now. It also doesn´t count the amount of time put the S-word on screen (sometimes twice,

Michelle Obama and her eldest daughter Malia made a rare appearance in swimsuits as they are enjoying the sun in Miami. The mother and 19-year-old daughter were spotted walking off Miami Beach on Saturday surrounded by friends - including former Obama administration senior advisor Valerie Jarrett - and Secret Service personnel.Michelle, 53, looked sensational in a white bikini top matched with high-waisted white denim cut-off shorts as she trudged her way barefoot through the sand, holding her shoes in one hand.
Mitt Romney took a swipe at Donald Trump on Monday, condemning the crude comments the president was said to have made about Haiti and African countries -- calling them “inconsistent (with) America’s history and antithetical to American values” with a reference to Martin Luther King, Jr. The poverty of an aspiring immigrant’s nation of origin is as irrelevant as their race,” Romney tweeted. “The sentiment attributed to POTUS is inconsistent w/America’s history and antithetical to American values. May our memory of Dr. King buoy our hope for unity, greatness, & ‘charity for all.’”
This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the NAACP wants man-made global warming to be seen as a civil rights issue, arguing King’s vision of a society free of racial injustice can’t be achieved without addressing warming. “We see climate change as a civil rights issue,” Jacqueline Patterson, head of the NAACP’s environmental and climate justice program, said in an online radio spot for the Yale Center for Environmental Connection. Environmental activists have been increasingly framing global warming as a matter of “environmental justice,” since “minority and low-income populations are disproportionately affected by global warming,” Patterson told Yale’s online radio Climate
The most recent attack on the president is designed to throw him off balance during the debate on immigration. Senator Durbin, doing his best Claude Rains imitation, stated, "I cannot believe that, in the history of the White House, in that Oval Office, any president has ever spoken the words that I personally heard our president speak yesterday." Durbin was responding to Trump´s alleged comment that Haiti, El Salvador, and certain African countries are "s---holes." Many of the reports omit mention of El Salvador because it does not fit the anti-black allegations. Senator Durbin is not a young man, and he
NBC plans to televise any players who refuse to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl, but there may be nothing to show. It appears that NFL players are no longer taking a knee during the national anthem, namely because none of the teams with still-active protesters has qualified for the postseason. By the end of the regular season, only five teams featured at least one player regularly sitting or kneeling on the sidelines for the anthem: the Seattle Seahawks, the San Francisco 49ers, the Miami Dolphins, the New York Giants and the Oakland Raiders. None of those franchises made the
Actress and yogurt salesman Jamie Lee Curtis knows exactly whom to blame for a false alarm that told Hawaiians an incoming ballistic missile was detected. It was all President Trump´s fault. Duh. Now, never mind that Trump was in Florida at the time. On the golf course. And forget that Hawaii´s Emergency Management Agency (EMA), run by the Hawaiian state government, apologized for setting off the false alarm when someone pushed the wrong button. In a Saturday afternoon post on Twitter, Curtis attacked Trump, writing "YOU DID THIS!" "This Hawaii missile scare is on YOU Mr. Trump. The real FEAR that
This is the shocking moment a massive brawl broke out in a California pizza restaurant over a missing iPhone that turned out to have been in the lost and found the whole time. Police were called to John´s Incredible Pizza Company in Newark´s NewPark Mall on Saturday night after violence erupted. It broke out after a girl missing her phone had approached a group to see if they´d seen it but quickly descended into chaos, with video showing two large groups of people exchanging blows and screaming at each other. Newark police officers had to call in officers from the Fremont Police Department
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) on Monday announced she plans to boycott President Trump´s State of the Union address to Congress at the end of the month, joining a handful of other Democratic lawmakers who are skipping the annual event. "I´m here on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to say I will not be going to the State of the Union," Jayapal said in a video posted on social media. "I think it is absolutely unacceptable to see the racism and the hatred coming out the White House in a way in which this president is fueling the flames of divisiveness across
TRENTON, N.J. — Days before his inauguration as New Jersey’s 56th governor, Phil Murphy had Hollywood on his mind. The 60-year old Democrat had just read a headline about reshoots on “All the Money in the World,” which had been done in a hurry to remove disgraced actor Kevin Spacey from the movie. (Snip) Murphy is ready to end his obscurity. On Tuesday, when he is sworn in, New Jersey will become one of just eight states where Democrats run every branch of government. If Murphy has his way, New Jersey will become a proving ground for every liberal policy
Former President Bill Clinton said on Twitter Saturday that no Clinton Foundation funds were used to pay for his daughter´s wedding. After President Trump reportedly made crude remarks about Haiti and other less-developed countries, some on the right pointed to alleged mishandling of Haitian earthquake relief funds by the Clinton Foundation. On Twitter, President Clinton slammed the notion that any funds from the foundation, whether earmarked for Haiti or not, were used in association with his daughter Chelsea´s wedding to investment banker Marc Mezvinsky. No Clinton Foundation funds—dedicated to Haiti or otherwise—
Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson added her name to a growing list of Democratic lawmakers who say they are fed up with President Trump and will boycott his State of the Union address at the end of the month. (snip) “For the first time since I began serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, I will not be attending the president’s State of the Union address,” Wilson said in a statement late Sunday. “I have no doubts that instead of delivering a message of inclusivity and an agenda that benefits all Americans, President Trump’s address will be full of innuendo, empty
Why would my 22-year-old brother be calling so early on a Saturday morning? I’d ignored the first call. But the second time the phone rang, I picked it up. He was panicking, his voice trembling uncharacteristically: He’d just received the emergency alert warning of a ballistic missile that was heading for Hawaii, where I’m from, and where he and my family still live. “THIS IS NOT A DRILL,” the alert read. My brother was alone, and had no idea what to do or where to go. And he wouldn’t have had much time to figure out a game plan—some estimates
