13 Days in July:
The Trump White House’s crucible

WASHINGTON (AP) — They were the 13 days that transformed the White House. Even for an administration that spent most of 2017 throwing off headlines at a dizzying pace, events in the second half of July unfolded at breakneck speed. They encapsulated both the promise and peril of President Donald Trump’s first year in office — and yielded aftershocks that reverberate within the White House even as the calendar turns to 2018. The two-week span laid bare the splintering of Trump’s relationships with two influential Cabinet members, foreshadowed the reach of the Russia probe into the interior of his orbit;

Oh, how breathless and dramatic. AP´s panties seem all wadded up. Their attempt to escalate normal every day Administration dealings into some kind of "event to remember" is laughable.

Jonathan and Zeke should write for a renewal of the "All My Children" soap opera.

Lots of the news from sub-Saharan Africa is about war, famine, poverty or political upheaval. So it’s understandable if many Americans think most Africans who immigrate to the United States are poorly educated and desperate. Research tells another story. While many are refugees, large numbers are beneficiaries of the diversity-visa program aimed at boosting immigration from underrepresented nations. And on average, African immigrants are better educated than people born in the U.S. or the immigrant population as a whole.

The minuscule Galilean town in which Joseph and Mary spent their lives and raised their son Jesus was, quite literally, a joke. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” asked one disciple, when he heard where the Messiah was from. Some scholars posit that this was a popular saying in the first century. In any event, Nazareth was on the fringes of the Roman Empire. Roman roads avoided it until the second century. Jesus came from a backwater of a backwater; he and his mother and father, the figures at the heart of the Christmas story, were most likely considered throwaway

Kent Wash. - It was supposed to be a second chance at a new life. A three-strikes felon serving life in prison was released early. But, two years later, he and another man showed up to the Kent Regional Justice Center Monday to face murder charges. The alleged victim´s family was also there. The Cabrera family said it was a struggle to show up in court and come face-to-face with the two men suspected of killing their loved one, 24-year-old David Cabrera. “It was pretty hard. It was very difficult for whole family,” said Daniel Cabrera, the victim’s twin brother.

Putting people on a pedestal is risky. It’s too easy for them to fall off. Even so, I don’t think we can, or should, stop ourselves from looking for people to admire. We’re always finding out that someone who seemed wonderful wasn’t really all that we imagined. And lately there’s been a hailstorm of revelations about well-known and well-liked people, mostly men, who have behaved badly toward women and in some cases other men.

PARIS (AP) — Sometime in 2014, a group of analysts walked into the office of Eugene Kaspersky, the ebullient founder of Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab, to deliver some sobering news. Kaspersky’s anti-virus software had automatically scraped powerful digital surveillance tools off a computer in the United States and the analysts were worried: The data’s headers clearly identified the files as classified. “They immediately came to my office,” Kaspersky recalled, “and they told me that they have a problem.” He said there was no hesitation about what to do with the cache.

In an interview with MSNBC, Graham, who has advocated for legislative protections for young, undocumented immigrants, rejected the notion of ending family-based immigration in exchange for enshrining the protections of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program into law. A proposal by Cotton and Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) seeks to end so-called chain migration, which allows U.S. citizens and permanent residents to sponsor family members abroad to
